Hot tip: if you're ever commissioned by Les Wexner, he's notoriously cheap on commissions, despite actually having a real Picasso in one of his bathrooms. More than one artist has told me he'll bail halfway through. Double the commission price and take the half (down) payment if you can stomach several changes he will put you through.

My mother is a successful artist. Most of her income is from commissioned work. She does a really good job showcasing her portfolio of past works to clients and talking about how she can create a custom piece that has the same flow or composition of another piece but with their desired colour pallet. Another big thing is people like to show off their new art piece to their friends and family when they have them over. So being able to talk about the intricate details of a piece in a way that the client can then recite back to their friends is important. Not sure where I was going with this, but yeah… I think building a portfolio of diverse works and then showing that portfolio to clients and explaining how you can create a custom piece for them, using X piece from the portfolio as reference, is a great way to expand your sale options and provide yourself with another stable source of income.

Thank you for making this video! I have been a part-time artist for about three years now and I have sold about 40 original pieces now (many of them commissions), but now that I have a good paying other very part time job to pay the bills, I’m finally asking myself, “What do I want to create? What do I stand for? Who am I as an artist?” Those questions have shook me to the core in some ways for the last couple months as I am preparing to create more of my own pieces that I want to create and to make and sell my own prints. I got so caught up in always creating for other people, that I somewhat lost my own creative voice, and now it is time for me to rediscover my passion for art and to really pursue it as a career. I am only accepting commissions that I am thrilled about creating and are paying well. Thank you for shining light on this topic! I love your work and how you help others!

It was lovely watching you paint this commission and it was so funny 😂, too. I found it very interesting to see cause to me these two pieces look quite different from your other work. But they are beyond beautiful 😍 for sure and the details are unreal! I‘m sure the collector is enjoys it daily! Personally, I hate doing commissions (as you said, sometimes any amount of money offered for them wouldn’t cut it!) and thus have decided early on to only take on those who come from people I already know and value and if the subject matter feels interesting and fun to me. Nothing beats the creative freedom of non-commissioned creations. ❤ Happy painting 😘!

You were one of the first artists running a successful, professional fine art business that I came across and I started following you and your work across different platforms. Your IG reel efforts make me laugh; and, I am glad you hopped onto KZfaq to share your knowledge and your humor and your light in more depth. This informative vlog here of your early to current experiences with commissions is right in line with what I am experiencing in my first two and a half years as a full-time artist - including the request for nude portraits. 😅 Thank you for this summary and for your recommendations. Here's a pro you didn't mention: commissions give you a good incentive to try painting something you'd never otherwise think to paint, so I have found them to be great for practice. For example, I did a painting for my friend with a mermaid and a polar bear. From that painting I learned how to do ocean landscapes, fish scales, and polar bears, none of which I'd gotten around to trying before that. Doing that commission made me a better artist for sure.

What a gorgeous painting! And YES PLEASE make a video dedicated just to pricing. I find that charging based on time is difficult since I’m not a full time artist and try to sneak in painting on weekends and spare moments during the week if I can.

Thanks for your insight on this topic, Brooke! For me, I have a price range of cost per square inch - based on how much detail or difficultly the idea or reference image involves. I find this gives the client an idea of what they could afford before slamming them with a number right off the bat. Eases the blow, ya know. 😋

Beautiful work! Love that you mentioned that artists get into the arts so we can avoid numbers - LOL! So true! i just retired from a soul sucking job and now i am working on my art , which has been a side hustle forever, or feels like it. I think for me the biggest struggle of pricing my art, especially commissions, is the imposter syndrome creeping in and telling me that i can't charge what my art is worth... because i am an imposter. I enjoy your videos a lot and i totally feel the cold climate portion at the beginning of this one, as a fellow Canadian! Enjoy the holiday season, looking forward to more videos in 2024!

We’ve been discussion what he might want, what I’m best at, size, price, all that and thanks to this video, and my art teacher, I know I’m going about this right. Thankfully I’ve known him forever so there’s no trust issues there, he just has to figure out what he wants which is taking awhile…as in we’ve been slowly discussing this for a month at least 😅 I want to paint him something I know he’ll really like though so it’s ok all in all. Thanks so much, Brooke. This was an excellently timed video for me as I am coming to the end of a commission and it has been pretty nasty. Unfortunately, my client really liked one of the four sketches I did for her before I started on the full-sized painting, and after many "corrections" requested that I created an absolute copy of my sketch...only bigger. I feel like I have been trying to create a forgery of one of my creations...if that makes sense. It hasn't worked to her satisfaction, so now she is getting the sketch framed and some cards to go with it, and I get to keep the canvas and use a tonne of gesso and create something I want to create. Oh, and I did do the commission on a contract and so I get to keep the 50% payment...so long as I buy the frame and create many cards.... ;) Thank you for such humorous videos and for creating such beautiful pieces of art.

I get the validation sense. I’m a beginner sculptor with polymer clay. Somebody saw one of my pieces and he commissioned me to make him something a month later. I wasn’t even trying to sell any of my art. Didn’t think I was ready for that.

Gorgeous paintings! The mood in them is outstanding. ❤ Also, really enjoy the way you edit the parts where you paint on certain areas as they give a step by step kinda vibe, which is quite helpful for me personally. I’m quite inexperienced with this medium, which is why. Thank you for this video! (:

I found you about a month ago. I’m a beginner artist in sculpting and am going to start wood burning as well. I’ve done one wood burning project before I tried sculpting and it wasn’t bad for using a soldering iron basically. 😂 See you next year. Have a great Christmas time or whatever it is you celebrate. Stay warm.

Love the chill vibe of this video :-) I'm scared as hell of commission work, but it's because I'm just an amateur artist.

Very interesting video, and the commissioned piece you're working on is truly beautiful! Even though the information you share here wouldn't likely apply to someone like myself whose art is only likely to find itself in homes of family and friends or the occasional flea market, it was still a very interesting look into the highlights and pitfalls of commissioned artists. Again, the piece showcased here is beautiful and your undeniable talent is inspiring. Happy Holidays!!

Thanks for sharing this info, Brooke, and all the best for 2024! These were two lovely paintings (or should I say 2 lovely paintings?) The question I was left with after watching this was - what did your client ask for, and how did you (1) come up with the reference photos, and (2) what did you use to create the reference photos? If you can speak to this in a future video that would be helpful! Thanks so much, and happy painting!

Thanks Janina! My client had a print which she wanted me to use as reference, which I used as more of like a mood board - we wanted a kind of stormy look, lots of different flowers, a variety of colour but not too vibrant, etc. and she also wanted two separate paintings of different sizes that would be hung side by side. I started with a little sketch that mapped out the composition and how the painting would flow from one panel to the other and once we agreed on that, I found hundreds of different flower references on pinterest and kind of stitched them all together to create two images that I would use as my main references. And whenever I got stuck on something I would go outside and take photos of the foliage in my garden and around the neighborhood to use back in the studio! I wanted to include this whole process in this video but it was already too long haha. I think I'll make more videos in the future diving deeper into the actual art-making process!

@b.cormier Interesting process, Brooke! Yeah, if you do a future video on finding/creating sources that would be great. I know there are a lot of apps out there for this. I haven't used one. Procreate sounds popular - I think it's an Apple app (an APPle? Lol), and I'm android/PC user. I know you do take photos for references. I'd love to, but I live far in the country and it's not always easy to find what I want. I'd love to find a simple app for PCs - if you happen to know of any! Hope Vienna was lovely and that this is a marvellous year for painting, and a happy first year (continuing) of marriage! 💞
