First soap making video I’ve watched. My grandmother made all our soap (yes using lye). I didn’t know what store bought soap was until my grandma died in 1970. I’m going on 68 and realize that my younger years were spent caught up in modernization. Now that I’m retired some of the old days are coming back into my life.

Hi Robin, just reading your comment as a soap maker myself (self taught during lock down) , you should try it out for yourself. It's such a brilliant thing to learn because once you learn it, it's for a lifetime and one bonus is you can make the best soaps & gifts ever, all by your own design. Once you use handmade soap again your skin will hardly ever need moisturiser lol.

@@boop7313- yes, totally agree, provided one uses truly natural ingredients and not their toxic counterparts as so many soap makers do here on YT.

HI Mary! Have you thought about making soap on a rope? It is difficult to find these days..I remember EVERY Christmas my Dad would request soap on a rope. He liked that it wouldnt slip out of his hand, and it didnt get soggy sitting in a soap dish. Your soaps are beautiful and Im sure they smell even better than they look. Thankyou for sharing your talents😊❤

I will start by saying that I am not a soap maker…yet! I’ve been watching a lot of videos to learn and have seen other makers use 99% alcohol sprayed on the tops of the soap after pouring to help prevent soda ash. Thought it was worth mentioning if you want to give it a try. Thanks for the great video!
@lamarshrock878

Yes to this! I always spray alcohol on top. Usually almost right away and then I spray a couple more times in the first hour or so. I seldom have ash. ~Marita
@Soul.7

Also you can steam the tops of the loafs that have the soda ash after saponification. When about to release from the mould, instead steam the whole top surface area and leave to dry for a few hours. I often do it at night so I remove a dry loaf in the morning, then cut. Leaves a shining brighter colouring and milky ash gone. Bought myself a tiny steamer jug kettle on Amazon dedicated to shiny bright soda free textured tops. LOVE THIS VIDEO, inspiring, and a great promoter of the beauty and value of handmade soaps. When I want to go into a calm space free of the worldly chaos, I turn inward and either make soap, meditate or read life-affirming books. Bless ya. 🍓

Ive been dabbling in soap making off snd on for a few years. I was origionally trying to figure out how to work with bees wax and shea butters but that didnt turn out as well as i hoped. I made some shower melts that make your shower smell amazing and it melts down the drain. But now im getting into actual soap making. I love the melt and pour method. They came out with a clear soap that you melt and you add your own ingredients and fregrance to it and its so easy to cut. It melts in about 20 seconds in the microwave and i dont believe lye is in it but im not sure. But all the hard stuff is already done and you measusure out your own ingredients and you can use the same stuff to make shampoo bars as well. Im super excited about that.

Lovely soap! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and techniques. Please do reconsider the use of a glass mixing bowl for mixing the batter. According to the makers of Pyrex and Corningware, strongly caustic solutions (such as lye solution) do etch glass over time, causing it to shatter unexpectedly. Even if that doesn't happen, you could also drop the glass container, or knock it over accidentally. Either way, now you have a mess of caustic soap batter mixed with glass shards, making for an extremely hazardous cleanup. The large plastic bucket that you used for the second soap is so much safer!

🥰Wow - wish we had smell-a-vision ! I think your strawberries came out pretty good for a first attempt - they put me in mind of Christmas Puddings too 🎄 - could be a great seasonal round-shaped soap to make with a small tweak of the colours and a fruity/spicy scent! I love your workspace, and yes - an organised space is a productive one 🙂

If you use a small handheld clothing steamer on your soaps that have soda ash on them the soda ash disappears and you have nice shiny soap. I do this about a week before they are fully cured. I never really worry about soda ash because this method works wonderfully. Thank you for the wonderful video. Makes me want to get back to work making soaps again. Hugs to you and yours.
