thanks Al. Well done review. I want to update the audience just a bit on the new combo (Dice and FAC) version. The rules are combined so its easy to find answers no matter your play style. In addition we reduced the number of charts so that speeds the play just a bit more.

Cool. Thanks for the update Tim.

Has anyone incorporated a home brew rule to factor in a pitch out with a base steal situation in play? If a pitch out is called with the runner attempting to steal, would you decrease the steal rating by a letter grade? If a pitch out is called and the runner holds, the likelihood of the batter drawing a walk should increase marginally. How would that be factored in? Maybe if the subsequent action results in a reading from the In Play section of the batters card and a 2d10 roll is an even number with the 1st integer of that number an even number and this number falls outside the In Play number range on the batters card, then instead of reading from the Out section of the card, the batter draws a base on balls? Did I explain that articulately? What do you think? It's just that this game, which I love, and Statis Pro, my other favorite game, both ignore this 'defensive option' for combating steal attempts and I find that to be a short coming.

Al, I just started my 1977 Cubs replay with payoff pitch. The player card quality is top notch. Even though they are black and white, they look much better than the pdf sets I have printed. Opening day went scoreless for 14 innings until Cubs won it in the bottom of the 15th on a Bobby Murcer double. Game 2 had the unusual play result from flipping a 0. Backup catcher George Mitterwald was ejected in the 2nd inning arguing a walk. Had to insert starter Steve Swisher who, wouldn't you know it, Homers in the bottom of the inning. Cubs win game two by a 3-2 score with Bruce Sutter getting his 1st save. If I can figure out how to do it, I thought about posting a full game from my Cubs replay on you tube. The only camera I have is my android phone so not sure how well it will turn out. A good game to try it on may be game 4 when the Cubs travel to the Vet to play your Phillies. I am using as played lineups so the first game is Bill Bonham vs Wayne Twitchell.

Al: Excellent review as always! Just to add a couple of points: batter cards come with pitching splits or non splits and pdf cards can be printed in colour for those with that preference. Thanks!

Nice review of one of my favorite baseball games. One quick correction. You don't add the DP ratings of the batter and pitcher together. Instead, you compare the 2d6 roll to both ratings individually to determine if the double play occurs. In your case the DP ratings were 6 and 8, so the roll/FAC would have needed to be 6 or less for a DP. Also, thanks for another shout out to the Delphi community. I see a spike in activity over at Table Top Sports every time you do. It's nice to get some new blood over there and your reviews definitely do that.
@OBESPRING19824 жыл бұрын
As I heard him incorrectly describe the DP procedure, I immediately thought to scan the comments to see if anyone would post the correct procedure, as you've done. I might add that the rules provide for the dice roll to determine if the batter reaches on a force out or if the runner advances with the batter out on the ground out.

Great review Al. Still not sold on the randomness of FAC cards, that might just be me though. On average how long does it take you to play a game?
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
bkrich83 Well, you can always use the dice too. :) It takes about 30-40 minutes to play a game (on average).

Al. Excellent video. I wanted to get the 1977 season but it is currently out of print so I may order the 1982 season instead. I want the cards without having to print my own. You used a fancy word that I have never heard before when you were describing the game pieces. Specifically, the game mat. I can't spell it but it sounded like "ecoucherments". What does that word mean? Also, when ordering a season set, are the cards in perforated in sheets to be separated or are they loose? Thanks again for the nice video. I bought History maker baseball after watching your video of it. I am on the 1977 white sox replay now.
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
DavidA5205 Thanks David, not sure that I used the word correctly, but accoutrements is just a fancy word for accessories. And when ordering a season set the cards are loose, no separating required.
@DavidA52059 жыл бұрын
Al Wilson Al, I guess good things come to those who wait. I had been debating about ordering pdf the 1977 pdf season since the printed version was out of stock. Now, they are running a 30% off sale so I picked it up for the great price of $7. For that price, I also added the '69 season. It's a great deal.

Al Wilson Al, another question. Do you think the player cards for Payoff Pitch would look better with rounded corners like you made for the History Maker cards? I rounded the corners on my replay baseball cards and they looked good. I tried it on a few strat-o-matic cards and it didn't look right.
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
DavidA5205 Oh absolutely, I think they would look great with the corners rounded!!

Al, If I can put you on the spot, What are your top five favorite baseball games?, Also do you play any other sports games, if so which one's are your non baseball favorites ?. Thank you and you are so appreciated. Your passion and respect for the subject matter is very inspiring.
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
Curtis Bird Hmmm, gotta put me on the spot huh? :) As long as you understand that these are in no particular order I'd say my favorite 5 baseball games are History Maker, Payoff Pitch, Statis Pro, Strat-O-Matic and Time Travel. Yep, I play other sports games too. My favorites are probably Second Season Football and Red White & Blue Racin'.
@curtisdbird9 жыл бұрын
Hi Al, just found your channel and have been binge watching it . Your awesome and doing some great work. I was wondering if you could only play 2 baseball board games, which two would you pick. I was thinking of getting a strat and apba board. Right or wrong decision in you opinion? Thank you and keep up the good work!
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
Curtis Bird Thanks for the kind words Curtis, very much appreciated!! The quality of a tabletop baseball simulation game is VERY subjective. One persons gold standard, might be another persons throw away. Some people prefer FACs, some people prefer dice, some people prefer deep detail, some people want to be able to play a game in 20 minutes. Then there are the quality of components, the game play mechanics, the number of seasons available, support for fictional teams, etc, etc. So that said, I would never tell anyone that they made a right or wrong decision with their chosen baseball game. Also, personal opinions and tastes can change over time. But since you asked, I'd probably pick a modern game (History Maker) and a classic game (Statis Pro) if I could only pick two.
@marks.89699 жыл бұрын
This game looks terrific. The "anticipation" of the result between the pitcher's card and the batter's card -- something Strat-o-Matic doesn't offer -- is the essence of baseball and this game might have figured that out. And the lefty/right splits is something APBA and History Maker Baseball almost completely ignore. This seems like the perfect game and what I have been looking for in a tabletop baseball experience. Curious, Al: How does this game stack up against Strat-o and HMB?
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
+Mark S. You are right, this game does a great job of "framing" the payoff-pitch experience - more so than any other game. It's really a neat feature. As for comparing it to other games, that's a tough one. Strat, APBA, HMB and Payoff Pitch are all great games in their own right. HMB happens to appeal to me more than any other baseball game, but it really comes down to personal preference of the game player.

Al, do you know what the card size is on these? I was thinking about going PDF first to see if I like the game, but thought I would definitely want to sleeve the players. Thanks for the help

Thanks for the review. The cards do look well-made. Computer games are great, but I still also enjoy handling cards and dice. Is this game designed to allow a solo gamer to play without having to try and make decisions for both offense and defense?
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
tirmyta Yes, the game was designed with the solo player in mind. There are mechanics that automate when a player will attempt a steal, or attempt a bunt, so you can play the game from more of a spectator perspective without having to worry about making some of the more tactical decisions for both teams. That said, as the game player there are some decisions you will always need to make like when to remove the starting pitcher for a reliever, etc.

Good review.... Question - are there any game play decisions besides lineup? Thank you.
@hands-on-games9 жыл бұрын
Peter Gelman Yes, you can take control of all the normal in game decisions such as when to steal, bunt, go for an extra base, etc, or you can let the game make those decisions for you. It's very flexible. Other decisions you will always have to make for yourself are when to replace pitchers, when to intentionally walk a batter, etc.

Hey Al how does this game stack up to Dynasty League Baseball? I'm looking for a baseball game and was set on Dynasty League, but after seeing this demo I'm not so sure. This game has the solo player in mind and is cheaper.
