Recently spent some time with Leica's smartphone, the Leitz Phone 2. Only available in Japan through Softbank, The Leitz Phone 2 is pure Leica, from the UI, to the cameras etc. The collaborations with Huawei and Xiaomi are one thing, but this phone is an entirely different machine. How does it perform compared to other smartphones in the market? Check out my review to find out more.

Here's a tip, you need Japan SIM card in order to receive latest update, the phone technically unlock, BUT, it's region lock update.

Thanks for the tip. Now with the Xiaomi 13 Pro coming and I’ve used it, I think outside of the design the Xiaomi has trumped this in terms of image quality

@@btonelli I use leitz phone 1, yes the phone was the 1st 1" sensor BUT, the software just so bad it drag the hardware down, only update partial improve the phone camera performance, but the phone monochrome mode just too good it's like pocket monochrom phone. I'm currently using Xiaomi 12 Ultra, I say the Xiaomi performance looks more promising than Leitz Phone, but the AI and color mode sometimes just a little over vibrant for me especially Leica Vibrant profile. I hope Ultra 13 solves the issue tele photo lens sharpness and improves more main camera.

@@hennessylieu I think that Sharp were actually the first one utilizing the 1" sensor and bigger, but also only available in Japan.

Hey Bobby, great review! I have been wondering about these Leitz phones as I am really wanting a much bigger sensor than standard phones. I realize it may not have the same level of AI in its photography that Samsung and Apple are employing, but from a pure photographic experience it seems like a cool phone. Hope all is well in Singapore, haven't been there in 6 years, but it was always a great place to visit. Cheers!

Thanks T L. Yeah it’s a cool phone. Again I couldn’t go too in depth due to the one I have being pre-production and things will be improved but it’s a fun experience and different from the Leica Xiaomi phones

@4:06 you do get 4k video with the front facing cameras on Android phones including the Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra...

@@btonelli Those three I mentioned plus: Pixel 6 Pro, Galaxy S22 Ultra, Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy S20, Galaxy S10.... I could go on and on. Samsung phones have had 4K front facing video cameras for the last 4 generations and they had it before iPhones.

I'm in the UK so if I import this phone from.Japan will I have problems updating it or getting apps to workt?

Hmm I don’t know. Japanese have an interesting way of working their phones. Now with the Leica Lux app, not sure there is a need for a phone like this outside of the intended markets it sells in

Thanks.While it doesn't have the features of an iPhone pro It looks more special than an iPhone. So I'd be happy (I hope!) to put up with some frustration in setting it up and cope with not having a telephoto lens. Did you have any problems with the touch control on swiping?

Is it actually 240hz? I have a leitz phone 1, it doesnt feel like 240hz. Its the same as other phones having 1200hz display

This is what the specs say, but again with a prototype phone and no literature that came with it at the time of testing it’s hard to give a full review on it

@@theotherpaulsmith there is the Leica Lux App for iOS and Android that will give you the Leica looks plus lenses and it’s like 4 or 6 dollars a month

There is a work around to update the software, I had a copy of this ,phone,you need a Japness sim card in,and then you can connect it to wifi to update the phone, and then you can put your normal sim card,I am update fine,but when you update, you need the lapaness sim card

yup just a rebadge of the sharp aquos r7, not a "true" leica phone. If they ever did make something it would look a little more something like the zeiss zx1 but hopefully better lol

It’s a Sharp phone but nothing inside the phone says Sharp or refers to them. There are some differences as well that belong to Leica. A different phone vs the Leica / Xiaomi collab

It's not true to say that this is a Leica phone and not a collaboration. It is essentially identical to the Sharp Aquos R7 phone.

When you get the phone you see no other branding but Leica. Unlike Xiaomi or Huawei this is a phone with only Leica on it. So in essence it’s a Leica phone.

@@btonelli absolutely - there have been many Leica products made in collaboration with other manufacturers. Even going back to the analog years with Minolta. So this is s branded product, and not manufactured by Leica. If you buy the Sharp phone, you will get an identical phone minus the Leica logo at half price 🙂

This is a ridiculous device. It runs on an operating system that doesn't even support their own Leica photo app... So you can't sync your M11 with provided cable on this thing. Come on Leica focus on what you are truly good at 📸👍🏼

It runs on Android Snapdragon 8 gen 1. Just download the app from the google play store

I bought it second-hand, how can I choose a suitable phone case? This phone case is too hard to buy, especially in China. It seems that the Sharp R8pro phone case can be used on it?😂😂😂

@@btonelli OKbro，i've done it. sharp R8pro phone case is perfectly suitable for Leitz phone 2,they are like the twin , 😂😂😂😂,then ,I will look for the fim for it
