This is my "handsaw Re-toothing guide" and is used with a hacksaw to accurately cut notches into a saw plate, these notches can then be used to locate a saw file to begin shaping the teeth. I’m aware this isn't a new idea but does have some benefits over cutting the teeth with a file alone.
For someone like me who only re-tooths saws occasionally it's made the process much easier with consistent results. I have used it on many saws now and they have all come out great.
It’s mainly intended for smaller handsaws in the 24 to 12 tpi range, though it could possibly be used for small panel/rip saws as well.
Thanks for watching.

I would like to have one. Very good idea. I'm a retired tool maker of 47 years. My passion for cabinet making paralleled my life long vocation of being a tool maker. You have a very marketable product there. Buttafulley made and works very quickly. I like to sharpen my on saws and modify them to my liking. This tool would make that process much easier. Great job my friend! Best regards from Ohio.

Dear Dan, My Dear late Father was a cabinet maker and joiner and he would of loved to have seen your re- toothing saw guide. I am 75 years old now and learnt my trade as a monumental stonemason and I also learnt a lot from my Father regarding his trade. I like to watch Paul Sellers videos on joinery and furniture making I have used Pauls method on re-cutting saw teeth which is very good but with your brilliant re-toothing guide it makes tackling the job twist as quick. I take my hat off to you for such a brilliant well thought out design. Well done. Do you make your tool design for the general public and if so how much does it cost? I have subscribed to your blog and look forward to viewing more of your articles. I live in Jersey, Channel Islands, where do you come from? Best wishes to you from me.

Very ingenious and beautifully executed jig for setting the TPI. One observation, I was always taught that a file cuts in only one direction and if you pull it back over the work piece it just dulls the file. That said, on the fine a tooth it might be challenging to lift the file each time and reset it in the same tooth.
@thewoodmandan842
@thewoodmandan842 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment, it's much appreciated. Regarding dulling of files, in my opinion, the correct technique is to actually lightly drag the file on each stroke. Dragging makes such a marginal difference to file sharpness. Quoting AES from his excellent post regarding files. www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/files-and-filing.108361/ "At the end of the forward stoke, the cutting action must be disengaged from the work. In the picture below I've exaggerated this, trying to show the file lifted well clear of the job. In fact this exaggerated lifting is not necessary - it's actually not desirable, as light contact with the job should be maintained on the return stroke. You'll soon get into a slow, steady rhythm where the downwards pressure on the file is relaxed as the file comes to the end of the forward stroke and then starts drawing back to the starting position - with almost no downwards pressure applied. This "light pressure disengagement" of the file from the job is very important as it's this action which allows the chips to be cleared ready for the teeth to start the next forward stroke without being clogged up."

Great idea to save your saw files. I have to wonder if your earlier simpler idea with fixed TPI might sell better. I tend to favor simple tools without extra pieces to keep up with. What you have now is a beautiful. Not sure the rosewood handle is useful. I think you have a winner either way you choose to go.

Just an update on using the tool. It does work very nice. My problem is with little hacksaw blades. I got mine at Lowe’s ( big box store ). They were awful, they didn’t cut well and the teeth were wore out mid way through the process . Also they were difficult to start a cut.They were cheap Chinese blades. I didn’t cut the saw kerf very deep, just deep enough to give my file a place to start. I’m going to see if I can find better ones.
@thewoodmandan842
@thewoodmandan842 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Berl, pleased to hear the guide is working well. I've found cheap hacksaw blades are just not worth the hassle. Try to buy the best blades available to you, bahco sandflex are decent as are eclipse premium if you can find them. Regarding the saw being difficult to start, try partially grinding the first inch of teeth away, this should help stop the blade from snagging, also make sure the saw plate is as low down in your saw vice as possible, this will help prevent the plate from flexing which is the main cause of the hacksaw binding. All the best Dan.

Firstly, great video, but if I may make a few observations 1) A very fine saw is only really used for small cuts and as such the time taken by a very sharp saw V's a dull one is very small, in fact I only have one saw with more than 14TPI and that one is my dovetail saw and that has almost no set on at all and because a dovetail has almost no length to it it never gets dull 2) using a hacksaw with the set removed is one way but you could also try a jewellery saw with a 04 gauge blade.

Corian! Not why I'm on this video, but hey. The best way to have made that box would have been to cut a 2mm deep, 12mm wide recess in the corners and glue in the parts as a butt joint. This is the standard method of assembling Corian (I'm a designer and fabricator) and requires a very simple operation rather than accurate corresponding mitres. Additionally, the glue squeezes within the joint into that 2mm recess, then outwards to the external seam guaranteeing even coverage. If using the correct glue for the material the seam should be invisible when polished even though it's 10mm in from the corner. Just worth considering for future boxes if that is your thing 🙂
@thewoodmandan842
@thewoodmandan842 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. What you've described is the recommended method for Corian worktop construction. In my opinion for this application it's not ideal, to a trained eye the glue lines are always visible with the rebate method and the glue is never an exact colour match, plus I like a challenge 😉
@TristanJCumpole
@TristanJCumpole 5 ай бұрын
@@thewoodmandan842 Absolutely! Mostly what I do requires a more complex approach to internal corners for hygiene on cruise ship waiter's stations, handwash stations, etc. This often ends up with 24mm x 12mm blocks with a 10mm radius milled into a corner, a 10x2 recess into the opposite end of that, the whole thing recessed into a 24x2 trench and the vertical part fitted with a 2x2mm corner knocked out. I actually enjoy designing for these sorts of products, as it's like Lego for adults, however I dislike having to deal with the dust. Or the polishing. Cheers!

@@thewoodmandan842 Not really the angle. That is consistent on that type. But it desides how much of the teeth will be set and that determines in turn how wide the kerf will be. My theory is that the numbering is right for working in damp wood on construction sites as that was the most common use of saws before power tools. Thought about adding a depth stop screw but came to the conclusion that it is close enough to right to not care. Another option would be to grind the hammer at a shallower angle to better suite fine carpentry in dry wood? It will still bottom out against the anvil at the bottom and there is no need for it to hit the anvil at the top. Just stop at the same point all of the time
