The remarkable story of the discovery in central Vietnam of what has been called the biggest cave passage in the world and how it's discovery has transformed a war torn area from extreme poverty to one of the biggest tourist areas in Vietnam.

I'm Vietnamese Australian. Every trip I return to the motherland, I discover more of my identity and origin. I've travelled all over the globe, but I find myself drawn to Vietnam for the people. They inspire me with their resilience, assiduity, strength in courage, progression, emotional intelligence, welcoming nature and forgiving ways. They've experienced colonisation, war, poverty, hardships, yet they still remain true to themselves, enriched with culture, toil, humility, and gratitude. I grew up learning Australian culture and values. I'm proud to be Australian. It'll always be my home but somewhere along the way, I felt a significant part of me missing until I visited Vietnam, the first time in 2007. I've been back 4 times since the initial. Each trip makes me more whole, nourishes my soul. I've been all over Vietnam from southern, central to northern and archipelago destinations. My adventures are similar to playing a live Pokemon game searching for hidden gems and treasures lol. Ban Gioc Falls and Han Son Doong are two iconic national treasures I haven't yet explored. I'm visiting Cao Bang province next February to see Ban Gioc Falls, and currently working out to build fitness for Han Son Doong in 2026. It has always been my dream to see Han Son Doong ever since I learnt about it over a decade ago. Coincidentally, it's as though I've saved the best for last. It'll be the ultimate, most challenging adventure I've ever been on. I can't wait to find my true self there.

Wishing you a happy exploration of Son Dong Cave in 2026. The Australian Embassy in Vietnam also visited Son Dong Cave in 2016.

Ho Khanh most certainly made an incredible discovery in 1990....humble man finding the world's largest system of caves. Amazing. I only hope that greed for money doesnt lead to exploitation and destruction of this amazing natural phenomenon. Man is so good at doing that.

I wish I was blessed with health to do this. I’d love to see this cave in person. Thank you for the film. It allows me to see what I never will in person.

It has always been my dream to see this cave in person since I learnt about it over 10yrs ago. I'm 45, probably not in the best shape of my life, but I've been working out to build fitness with the vision to visit Han Son Doong in 2026. For months I've been trekking through Australian bush with steep ascents in rough terrain, even simulating wet conditions to train my body for this trip. It's been over 15 months since I quit smoking, so I've still got a long way to go to reach the level required. I remain absolutely determined. Thank you for your comment. I've actually drawn more motivation from it, although saddened by your misfortune. I've no excuses not to try so I'm going to do this for us! I wish you well.

Really interesting to see caving have this impact. Sign me up! Do the locals think of the cave as sacred space like in other parts of the world? Are there rituals still associated with the system?

Build a village: often a royal beginning, a noble start.... Somehow, somewhere along the path of peaceful, idealistic concept of improving life, lofty expectation of improving extreme poverty...along came the majestic imperialism and the mighty colonialism! "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it", "Only the dead have seen the end of war", and the definition of beauty as "pleasure objectified". - George Santayana

Because it was forgotten after the Vietnam War. Their soldiers hid in it. Then after the war they were too busy trying to survive. The cave was forgotten. Likely became something of legend
