Reverse self pycklogi karma a beautyfull thing

About 20 years ago I did a 6 week retreat at Land of Medicine Buddha in Santa Cruz. Lama Zopa had invited an even more senior teacher to give teachings on the Lam Rim, the graduated path to enlightenment. Lama Zopa sat with the rest of us students, though on a slightly raised cushion. While the senior teacher taught what amounts to very basic introductory teachings, Lama Zopa furiously took notes and acted as if he was learning this all for the first time. When the teacher talked about the preciousness of human life and the opportunity to practice to attain liberation, Lama Zopa radiated joy. When the teacher taught about death and the dangers of negative karma, rebirth in negative realms, etc., Lama Zopa looked terrified. Throughout, he was modeling how we should be reacting to the teachings. He was a trip to be around. One of his accomplishments that he was famous for was not sleeping. I asked a European monk if it was true that Lama Zopa never slept, and he said that he had tried to catch him napping a couple of times late at night while on trips and always found him up doing some practice or another, though at times he would seem to randomly tune out in the middle of a sentence for like 2 minutes or so. When asked why he never slept, Lama Zopa's response was, apparently, "if you knew the suffering of the hell realms, you wouldn't sleep either." Thank you for honoring him KD. While I was chanting I was remembering spinning the enormous prayer wheel at Land of Medicine Buddha, filled with hundreds of millions of Om Mani Padme Hum mantras he had written out, had photographed, and then put onto microfilm, so that each spin of the wheel would send out an almost infinite number of prayers for the happiness of sentient beings.
