Maiden Hangor Submarine Launch: Pakistan Navy's first Hangor-class submarine, built in China, marks the initiation of this submarine series. These submarines will undergo various tests, weapon installations, and anti-submarine warfare exercises before being formally inducted into the Pakistan Navy.
Contract and Construction: The contract for eight Hangor-class submarines between Pakistan and China was signed in April 2015. While four submarines are being built in China, the remaining four are under construction at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works under transfer of technology.
Design and Version: The Hangor-class submarines are based on China's Type 39A Yuan-class submarines and have slightly smaller displacement and size compared to the Chinese navy's Yuan-class submarines. China has introduced new and upgraded versions, including the Type 39B and Type 39C, post the Type 39A.
Basic Features: Karachi Shipyard revealed the specifications of the Hangor-class submarine during the IDEAS Defense Exhibition 2018. It has a displacement of 1,800 tons, while the total displacement with all equipment is around 3,600 tons. The submarine is 76 meters long with a draught of 6.7 meters and a beam of 8.4 meters.
Weapons: Pakistan Navy's Hangor-class submarines are equipped with six 533mm torpedo tubes and do not feature vertical launch systems. These torpedo tubes can fire heavyweight torpedoes or indigenous anti-ship cruise missiles. Notably, these submarines can simultaneously launch four anti-ship cruise missiles on enemy ships, utilizing two torpedo tubes for self-defense.
Other Systems: The Pakistan Navy has integrated various European and Chinese systems into its French-built Agosta-class submarines. These include Electronic Intelligence Systems, navigational radars, periscopes, torpedo countermeasures, and optronics mast. However, the systems of the #Hangorclasssubmarines have not been disclosed yet.
Current Status and Future: The initial four submarines of the Hangor-class were scheduled for delivery by 2025, with the remaining four expected to be delivered by 2027. Due to Germany's refusal to provide MTU 396 SE84 engines, there was a delay in the program, now mitigated by employing Chinese-made Stirling engines. The first submarine's delivery is expected by the end of this year or early next year, with the rest anticipated in the following year.
Pakistan Navy's Strategic Role: Submarines play a crucial role in any country's defense strategy.
