I'm so glad you gave Bepo a home! Senior cats (especially those with disabilities) usually are in the shelter for a long time, people are always looking for kittens which I can understand but senior cats are so much more chill!! You'll never have to deal with its rebellious teenage phase and just enjoy their chill calmness

I recommend you get him a wider and shallow bowl for him to eat from because of his whiskers (cats prefer to not have their whiskers touching the bowl when eating) So happy you adopted and gave him a home

when bepo "massages" you i've been told that it means he thinks of you as like a mother figure because thats what kittens do to get milk from their mom...its really adorable

My heart just melts when I see things like this. I adopted a cat from a shelter in similar circumstances. She came from a hoarder house and is blind in one eye. I fell so in love with her that I just couldn't even fathom leaving without her.

This is why I love older cats. They're so relaxed and calm.

Me and my misses had the same thing happen to us , we saw a couple of posts of a shelter not to far from us here in belgium , there was a younger 2 year old cat that lost an eye , but it was a sweetheart , we couldn't resist our little pirate cat and took him home , they also said that nobody wanted him because of the eye

It's sad to hear how a lot of young people are suffering with anxiety ,but I'm glad he helped you and you helped him by adopting him.

One tip: since Bepo is a semi-long haired cat, you really need to make sure you brush him regularly so he doesn’t get all matted, it also slightly helps the inevitable cat fur all over everything :)

My cats actually motivate me to clean way more often than I would normally do because I can tell they hate mess and are uneasy in it. Also, they motivate me to have a regular sleep schedule, which is awesome for my wellbeing and productivity 💯

I've had 4 older cats and i can reccomend it they learn your ways just like a kitten would, don't be put off taking on an older cat you will love it just as much as a kitten.

My boyfriend and I were in the same boat as you and Kyle! I’ve grown up with dogs my entire life and love them so much, but always had a huge misconception about cats. My boyfriend has always dreamed of a dog, but the rental we moved into, cats were the only pets allowed. We gave the cat shelter a go because we 1. Wanted to give a cat a new lease on life, and 2. Thought maybe it would be easier to start with an adult cat. I thought it would be hard to choose one, but this sweet and affectionate black cat came up to us and we were also told he had trouble being adopted because he was black and 13 years old! :( It’s been 1.5 years now and Lucius is one of the best things that’s happened to us. You’re so right about all the misconceptions - cats are incredibly clean (cleaning themselves, low maintenance), can be so gentle and loving, and an amazing best friend. Ours is also very vocal and likes talking to us. Learning about cats has been such a cool experience and my opinion has forever changed about them! So happy that you guys now know cat love - I’ve heard from so many cat friends that you don’t choose the cat, the cat chooses you ❤

Lovely story! Just a tip, cats whiskers are very sensitive so when you use deep bowls for food it can bother their whiskers. I’ve been using a flat/shallow bowl for my cats and you should try too!

We adopted an older cat who was VERY friendly in the shelter, but then at home she hid for a while, just like Bepo, but then she came out of her shell. And she was a complete lover eventually. Also, please show Bepo the KZfaq channel called Kitten Academy because it is a great show for cats. Chris and Dr. DJ run the academy.

Bepo is such a gift in your household. So happy for all 3 of you. Our family always have cats - no allergy issues with the young ones - and yes, the older cats are calmer in temperament & a lot more loving especially when they know they are now a part of the family. Always loved cats and will always love them - ALL.

As a fellow new Asian catmom (our 6-year-old tuxedo cat Lily ended up in a shelter twice before we adopted her), I feel you. It's quite the journey! The Litter Robot is really fancy, but it's actually huge and not great for our tiny apartment. Nice touch watching Haikyuu, y'all have great taste! One of the best things you had that allowed this to happen, was patience. You had the patience to allow Bepo the time he needed to adjust, and the patience to discover and mesh with Bepo's particular personality. Thank you for giving Bepo a home, and to give him all the love he deserves; as well as excepting all his quirks along with the endless love he gives in return.

This is so cute I love Bepo already 😭 It's so nice to see elderly cats being brought home from shelters. But one piece of advice I have is that when playing with the laser toy make sure to give him a treat at the end because I've heard that lasers can be very frustrating for cats since they aren't able to actually 'catch' the red dot. After playing with the laser you should let Bepo "catch" the dot which you have directed to the treat. It gives them a sense of catching pray and makes them less agitated! :)

Bepo looks awesome and in good health, he will probably around for months and months to come! Big high fiive for putting your heart on the line, thats why many dont adopt elderly cats, they cant handle the heartache.

Just let me start by saying that he is absolutely precious. I have never been a cat person until I got our cat from a shelter if I could adopt a whole bunch, I would I never knew much about cats, but they are very, very smart self-sufficient they really do, adapt to you and want love and they are very good for people with the anxiety. I have always been to person but now I really think that I’m a cat person. I think you’re awesome because you are giving that cat the best years of its life I feel like if people could just give cats a chance

Yes! I share the same sentiment as many others here. Thank you for giving him a home. He will reward you with endless love & loyalty. It’s great having a kitten you bond with but a senior or special needs cat or dog will love you just as much if not more. I love people who adopt the “misfits.” They’re like the misfit toys from Rudolph. People who do that are special. I’m a huge Cat & Dog Daddy. I lost my two kitties last year which I am still reeling from. Chip lived 16 years & Calvin lived 13 but I secretly hoped they’d live 20+ years. Every minute with them is special & giving them a home make you a special human. If more people were pet lovers the world would be a merrier place. I can barely go to the shelter because I want to adopt all of them. I plan to adopt 2 new cats - maybe a mix of a kitten & some senior but kittens can drive seniors nuts, we’ll see. I wish I was a millionaire because I’d adopt 20 cats & dogs & live like a crazy pet person🙂 They are gifts to humanity & one of the best things in this life. Thank you for giving Bepo a loving home. I could not decide on what cat to adopt at the shelter for a birthday present for myself. Like others my beloved kitty died years before and I stayed alone. As I was leaving to "sleep" on a decision, a paw came out of the cage and grabbed onto my sweater. Thats it, she picked me. So happy with my new little one, Louie Bell. So spoiled too.

I can only congratulate you on being openminded and adoting him with the understanding of cats you had before! Very happy for all of you, especially Bepo! Only one note: id recomend getting a lower bowl for feeding him because a cats whiskers are very sensitive and they usually prefer to eat from a dish without touching it with whiskers :)

Just a tiny tip Cats don’t like to have their whiskers touch the sides of a dish since these are their sensors so serving his food on a flat saucer vs a deep bowl would make him so much happier! You’re doing an amazing job as his mom! ❤

Older cats and kittens always provided me with emotional and physical therapy. When we pet or stroke a cat, it causes a release of oxytocin in both humans and our animal companions, which can also reduce pain. Thanks for giving him a chance. People don't know what they're missing.
