Rare footage of Hank Mobley in 1968 at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. It is from a Danish TV show called JazzBeat.
Kenny Drew is on piano, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert 'Tootie' Heath on drums.
This footage was found by one jazz researcher sterh86@gmail.com and he is willing to search for many other artists' footage on a commercial basis.

Hank introduced me to jazz. Growing up in Philly I was 14 yrs old, a budding elec bass player. He and Sunny Gillette in his late 50's (my guess) rented my mother's basement to practice. The most magical thing we've ever heard. So smooth and humble. He tried to take under his wing and teach me more about jazz, at that time my love was funk. Hey electric bass. I was 19 in the army when my Mom wrote me about his passing and I was distraught. But guys like him never goes away.

@@ThouveninpascalNot gonna agree on Brecker, but Rollins and Coltrane are, to me at least, closer to being the greatest of all time than Mobley. But there’s also many more, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Coleman Hawkins. There’s too many to compare. Tenor has one of the widest range of amazing players out of most saxophones in my opinion. It’s pretty widely agreed on that the Alto was owned by Bird, soprano probably coltrane, but tenor has always been a toss up.

Angelo , his tenor voice was unfiltered, always coming direct from the heart. Hank’s phrasing was like an interwoven poem, all interconnected in perfect harmony; if you keep only the opening and the closing phrases and take out all the rest in between , there you will surely find the thread that still unites the beginning and the ending phrases together. Coltrane touched our minds with his sheets of sound; Mobley caressed our hearts with his tone & phrasing.

Beginning in 1965 Hank began to sacrifice some of his soulful strength to smoking and to Blue Note's insistence that he create hit albums employing "rock" beats. To hear him at his best pick up "Soul Station" on Blue Note, Lee Morgan's "Shortnin' Bread" on the same label and Miles Davis "At the BlackhawK." His solo on By, By Blackbird (Friday Night) is as creative and emotional as jazz gets. I've waited since 1950s for a video of Hank. Thanks for this one, with ceaselessly swingin' piano of K. Drew.

Way cool video!! Kenny Drew so underated and largely forgotten now. I was in Atlantic City in '64 on vacation with my parents, 13 years old and wandering around the boardwalk. There was a baron Virginia avenue and I walked past and heard this Jazz band playing a ballad and the sign out front read,"Hank Mobley ". Too young to get in so I stood outside and listened to the set. Wow!

What a superb rendition by Hank and his masterful comembers. I lived in Germany in the early 60s and got to hear the cats play in the small jazz clubs of the era. It was the ideal environment for jazz performers and their audience. Europeans were sophisticated jazz fans who honored the musicians and treated them with deep respect. Glad I got to see this fine video and remember the times.

Hank is himself--melodic, inventive, soulful--even if the pulse and harmonies de-emphasize his "swing" feel in favor of Coltrane's driving intensity. Hank is the most under-appreciated soloist in jazz. Listing to the first track on his album "Soul Station"--"Remember" by Irving Berlin--brought more joy to me than anything I've heard--including Coltrane.

Bass right next to the piano player instead of being in the harp. Drums hi hat right next to the bass. Really helps the grove that way. Check out Hank Mobley on Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall with Gil Evans. Hank Mobley was one of the most underrated musicians of the bebop era. He was was described as the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone", a metaphor used to describe his tone, that was neither as aggressive as John Coltrane nor as mellow as Lester Young, and his style that was laid-back, subtle and melodic, especially in contrast with players like Coltrane and Sonny Rollins.
