Through modern technology, Hank got to sing a duet with his dad. Hank Sr. died January 1, 1953. Hank Jr. was 4. This was written by Hank, Sr.

Why do people say he died Jan. 1st? He died along the way to a show. SO,... he died Dec. 31st. 1952. The coroner declared him dead Jan. 1st. 1953. I was only three months old at the time. I did learn to love to hear my dad sings his songs. Father and son is almost always special as it was with us.

That someone was a man name Big Bill Lister. Lister was recording an album and told Hank Sr. he needed a beer drinking song. Hank cut the demo, gave it to Bill, and he recorded the song. Years later Lister presented it to Hank Jr and his manager Merle Harmon and they decided to turn it into a Sr-Jr duet and the rest is history.

It was basically a tribute to his dad.

There's sort of a "full circle" aspect to this project. Hank was only 3 when his father died. Hank Jr. started off singing his Dad's songs (at 8), eventually went his own way and caught a lot of grief for it from old-time fans (listen to Hank Jr's "Family Tradition"). So, singing his Dad's song, "with" his Dad, was poignant.
@saintdane96842 ай бұрын
When they’d talk about a family tradition, they wouldn’t be doing it about drinking, it was about smoking and having more of an outlaw vibe to his music rather than the blues aspect his father had. Hank Sr died because of his health conditions, as well as him drinking like a fish
@saintdane96842 ай бұрын
I’m not saying that ya are wrong, just adding context to family tradition

Hank Williams recorded this song on an acetate record in 1951 for a up and coming artist named Big Bill Lister. Bill never recorded the song and forgot about it,the record sat in a box in Bills attic for over forty years before it was discovered again and was almost lost due to the heat. This song was an unknown recording of Hank and his guitar and took several months of restoration to save it. It was then presented to Hank Jr in 1989 who decided to try new video technology where he could sing with his father. The song and video were a huge hit and lead to Hanks fifth entertainer of the year award.

Yes, this is Hank William SR’s song. William’s JR covered and included footage of his dad performing. JR was only 3 when his father passed away.
@beegee19604 ай бұрын
It was not a cover exactly. Hank, Sr never released the song. It was a demo tape that lay forgotten since before Hank’s death. When it was discovered by an old friend of Hank, Sr and he brought it to Hank, Jr. Hank recorded as a duet with his Dad. The song won all kinds of awards that year, Song of the year, Album of the year, best duet, and several others. Actually the footage of Hank, Sr and his band was not from this song. It was from Cold Cold Heart. They used modern technology to make it look like they were singing the song.
@IronRaspberry4 ай бұрын
@@beegee1960it’s still a cover of his father’s song, whether it was released or not. And I wasn’t implying that it was footage of a performance for that song in particular.

Not quite, it was a demo recorded by Hank Sr for his bandmate Bill Lister who asked Hank to write him a beer drinking song for Bill's album. Lister then gave the Acetate disc to Hank Jr in 1988 and he and his manager decided to turn it into a Sr-Jr duet.

This song has an interesting history. Hank Williams wrote around 200 songs but only recorded about half of them before his untimely death at age 29. Hank Senior had done a rough recording of this song but never finished it. In all likelihood he meant to work on it more at some future date. This rough recording disappeared, and the world didn't even know it existed until it reappeared more than 40 years later. Apparently, Hank didn't think much of it and somebody he knew took it as a souvenir. When the recording surfaced someone thought Hank Junior might like to hear it. He quickly realized this was a lost recording of one of his dad's songs and thought fans might like to hear it. Unfortunately, the recording was in bad shape. They cleaned it up and enhanced it as much as they could, but the first half of the song was unusable. That's when Junior got the idea of doing a duet of sorts. He would sing the first half of the song and the rest would mostly be Hank Senior. It worked and the result was another hit for both of them. The idea in the video was that Hank Junior was working in the studio when a big supernatural storm comes up and Hank Senior's ghost visits the studio.

Hank Jr. was so very young when his daddy died. He never got the chance to perform with his dad. That's what makes this video so precious. But through the gift of technology, she got to sing some great duets with her dad.

I grew up on Hank Williams Sr.. When I was in daycare in the early 1960's at nap time they would put Hank on the record player. That's the first time that I heard Hank Sr., my favorite song back then was My Buckets Got a Hole in it. Hank drank himself to death, he died in the back seat of his Cadillac. Hank and his wife are buried in Montgomery, Alabama in the city cemetery on top of the hill. His grave site is really something to see with the beautiful headstones and statue. I grew up in Hanks stomping ground in south Alabama. Hank Jr. Recently got married on his mother's land and the reason he has a beard is because years ago he fell off of a mountain and has some bad scars, so he wears a beard to cover them up. Hank Sr. was a alcoholic and loved his whiskey, his drinking killed him. Hank used to get arrested for public drunkenness quite often. Just a little info on Hank Williams Sr...

You are correct in that this was a Hank Sr song that Jr just remade in honor of his father. Hank Sr died when Jr was very young, I think around 4-5 years old so he never really knew his dad. Hence the thunder storm and all the lightning going on in the beginning.

So yes, Hiram Hank Sr wrote the song, almost all his songs were crying tragic loves songs. His wife, Hank Jr's Mom, and Hank Sr had a tough life. Hank Sr was a drinker, hook on pain killers due to a severe back injury. Hank Sr was even Black balled from the Grand Ole Opry for no showing events, and so forth. He tragically died in the back of a Cadillac on the way to Canton Ohio for a show. Randall Hank Jr who was nicknamed Bocephus by his dad, was only 3 when his Dad died, but was playing music by 8 years old. When he got his first deal in 1964, he was basically impersonating his father. He basically looked like and sang like his Dad, and sadly began to abuse alcohol like his Dad. In 1975, he almost fell to his death, literally fell almost 500 ft mountain climbing in Idaho. He grew a beard and wore sunglasses to cover the scares on his face, had more than 15 surgeries, and took 2 years to learn to sign again. He changed to more of a southern rock type singer and grew fame with that sound. Nonetheless, a man approached him about putting this video together, and although there were limited video recordings of his father, the man spliced Hank Sr singing Hey Good Lookin', and was able to re-digitize his mouth to make it look like he was singing "There's a Tear in my beer". It was "ground breaking" technology at the time and this video won Video of the Year.
