I'm pretty sure "Chasing Cars" is Greys Anatomy's "signature song". It is played hundreds of times. Mainly when people are dying.

Sara Ramirez singing The Story is hands down one of my favorite covers of any song ever. She absolutely killed it, so much emotion and heart was put into that.

Chasing Cars is the song that we hear whenever someone is probably about to die and it’s basically our cue to start crying 😭😭😭

So for context, Calliope (her full name) in Greek mythology is a muse of music, so herself singing is actually her soul speaking out to her (earlier in the series she mentions that she thinks dying would make her hear music) (I can't remember when or how she said it but it was similar to that) so she knows that she's basically dying that's why she panics because she hears everyone singing.

I actually REALLY love Chyler’s voice. It fits Lexie’s character so well, and her husband actually sing together IRL.

Fun fact about Addison Montgomery? She is the top neonatal, prenatal and fetal surgeon in the country, possibly even the world. Not only that but she's also a double board certified OB/GYN. She's also got qualifications in both General and Pediatrics surgery; as well as infantile surgery. She can quite literally do everything. Also - Sara, Chyler and Chandra really saved this epsiode.

the fact that Hannah looks like April makes the part where she said “who’s this hot doctor?” MAKES IT SO MUCH BETTER

The fact that she doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and how grays works makes it so funny cuz it points out how blinded we are by our love for the show and we forget logic sometimes

Yes mark was a jerk in this episode but honestly I don't blame him, his bestfriend/mother of his unborn child was dying, he had every right to upset

owen hunt is played by a scottish guy so the fact he kept an american accent while singing is impressive to me

owen saying "calm down" had the same energy as sharpay's "everybody quiet!" in stick to the status quo and nothing can convince me otherwise.

It's been 11 years and Ramirez's version of The Story still gives me chills

There is one thing that really really bugs me about this episode...that they didn't release a recording!! I want this album! That harmony on Chasing Cars, Lexie's delicate Breathe, how fun Sunshine was (though I agree it was a little misplace din the seriousness of the episode) and damn when Callie lets loose...WANT ALBUM.

So, Chandra Wilson (dr Bailey) also came from theater and musicals. Also, the songs in this episode are all songs that have been in the show throughout these 7 years in some way. That’s why “chasing cars” is used. It’s been in the show a lot, as well has “how to save a life”. This show, while a bit strange, introduced me to “the story” by Brandi Carlisle, and for that I’ll forever be grateful

Plot summary: Arizona (blonde who proposed) has been with Callie (who is bi) for a while. They broke up for a little bit, and while they were broken up, Callie slept with Mark and got pregnant. Now Lexi,(also merideth’s sister)(who sings breathe) is in love with Mark. They have been off and on for a little bit. Ginger doctor is Owen Hunt, he is a military surgeon and he is quite amazing ngl. Bailey is the shorter doctor who ends up being the chief of surgery. During Wait, Arizona and Mark are fighting over parental dominance while Bailey is trying to care for Callie. April and Lexi sing harmonies for that song. Hot doctor is Jackson Avery. VERY HOT

I remember this episode when it aired. The whole cast had amazingly good voices and while it's very much a Karaoke type of musical episode, the feeling of the songs fit, even if the lyrics don't always. It remains one of my favorite episodes.

This is one of my favorite Greys episodes

In the musical episode all of the songs that the actors/characters are singing are songs that where famously used during Greys Anatomy’s run at that point in the series. Music has always been heavily featured throughout the series to the point where some particular songs are synonymously linked with the show. “Song beneath the song” by Maria Taylor is one of those songs, and they use the title of that particular song as the episode title.

I know everyone were all like “why is everybody singing?” But it has been said that this was Callie’s dream/hallucinations. I mean the woman was in a car accident! Cut her some slack!

“Aw a happy ending!” No one tell her about the plane crash fiasco.

The Story during Alex wedding BROKE ME

Kevin McKidd is actually a Scottish singer, he has said he mostly sings in pubs but he has sang for television and theatre as well, I think what made him sound so awkward was the fact his regular singing voice his Scottish accent is very prevalent but for greys anatomy he plays an American so they had to try and train the accent out of the songs they had him singing. Its a cool fact and I think that could be why he sounds so awkward in this episode.

The amount of disrespect to Mark Sloan is astounding

Fun fact, the girl you said had nice hair (Lexie Grey) is actually a main character on Supergirl, which had the musical episode with the Flash that you reacted to.

I remember playing the soundtrack on repeat when I was pregnant with my oldest. Owen's song (How We Operate) was my favorite song just because his voice gave me chills, and my daughter would fall asleep every time it played, even for about a year after birth. This episode and the songs still always make me cry.

When she got to the hospital, Callie says “Calliope means music”. So it’s like after the accident, she is hallucinating and her first thought was the meaning of her name. So that’s how it’s justified haha. I honestly love this episode, everyone’s great for me.

mark is one of the best characters in the show. seeing this episode out of context i can definitely see why you might think he's an ass but there's so much more to the story and to him.

Grey's has a strong history using songs, and often names episodes after them. The musical episode features some of its most iconic from previous key moments. The big ones are Chasing Cars, How to Save a Life, The Story, and Where does the Good Go. The name of the musical episode is Song Beneath a Song. Whilst that piece isn't sung in the musical episode it has been used several times. The season 18 finale used lots of the most iconic songs but some with new cover versions including a really good version of The Story by Davis Naish.

Also, there are two types of Grey’s fans... Those who hate the musical episode, and those who are obsessed with it. I am obsessed with it because I love musical theater and any show that tries to go outside the box and do some thing incredibly creative instead of just following the norm is amazing in my book. Plus, then they took all of the songs and turned them into a live benefit concert that they did for the Actor’s Fund and raised a ton of money, so that’s really cool.

Fun fact about greys: all the episodes are named after songs (I think there is only one exception but yeah I think it’s pretty cool)

They used songs that have been integral to the series. Chasing cars, Breathe, How to save a life have been played numerous times through the series and most of them were callbacks to these important songs to the show. You start to love mark, he was a douche most of his life but after the baby and Lexi he starts to mature very fast and become more paternal, him and Arizona eventually reconcile and they are a happy family, at least for a second, it is Grey’s nothing happy last long.

I am *so late* to this party, but all the episodes of Grey's to this point (and maybe always? not sure if they still do this) were named after songs. The music they featured was mostly iconic songs from the grey's episodes to this point. It's not supposed to make sense, cause it's her brain reacting to the trauma. She says something to that effect in the intro voice over "The brain is the human body's most mysterious organ. And when it's hurt ... when the human brain is traumatized ... well ... that's when it gets even more mysterious." But this reacts is made so much more hilarious by your not knowing things about the series, so I'm just here for it.

Callie’s reaction to Owen singing is everyone’s reaction to Owen singing LMAOO. Sara Ramirez is actually the main reason why they decided to do this episode. She INSISTED 🥰 and while jarring to watch during my binge to go from Callie on the hood of the car to hearing Owen singing, this episode is so iconic 😂

Mark (the father of the baby) is Callie's best friend, and they used to be sex buddies (Idk how else to describe it). I don't remember much of this season, but Callie and Arizona broke-up I think, so Callie slept with Mark and then Arizona and her came back together, but she was pregnant, so the baby has 3 parents now... And Lexie (the one who sang "Breathe") is Mark's ex. And yes, she's with Jackson now. The "random patient" singing is Henry, he was sick and Teddy (the blonde one) married him so he could be on her insurance and survive. After a while they actually fell in love. And also yes, everyone's horny all the time in this show...

Oh my gosh YESSS. This episode is just "Let's have Sara Ramirez just KILL IT for 43 minutes".

Honestly, I love Mark. He usually isn't like this, he was just under the stress of losing Callie and his daughter. It doesn't excuse what he said to Arizona but he was very much not himself. But he is definitely in my top 10. He and Lexie are immaculate.
