In the UK, "fancy dress" means costumes, like you'd wear for Halloween, so when you said you were contemplating a video showing a week of fancy dressing, I thought: Okay, a little off brand, and a weird time of year to do it, but I'd be here for that 😂

I recommended "Stolen Focus" to a few of my therapy clients and we had an informal book club about it. The discussion spawned a number of behavioral experiments in which clients reworked their relationships to their phones and led to really rich observations. I'm with you, Hannah, it is a compelling, readable, and relatable book. For those who aren't sold, watch some of Johann's interviews with various podcasters from the book tour; he's a remarkable story-teller. As are you, Hannah! 😘

I have been feeling like garbage too. And my best friend has just moved to another state. And the home has just been feeling really empty, so I went out and I adopted a dog. This is not a realistic solution for everybody. Dogs take up space, money, and most importantly time. But in my initial research to add a new pet to my home, I noticed what a crisis some local shelters are in as people are returning animals that they adopted during COVID and can no longer keep and backyard breeders continue to plague my specific community. I felt like I could make it work and I could save a life. So I went out and got a dog over the weekend. And she has been such a calming and centering force in my life.

I've been saying I can feel a lot of negative energy swirling around not just in my world but all over the world. I'm highly sensitive and observant and I can tell. It's hard for me to separate my own energy from others. It's relatable when people admit they're feeling bad. January and February were rough for me, but I decided I would reset at end of February and focus on the present moment day to day and fill that day with things that are good for me, make me happy or soothe me. I've had moments where I can feel the cloud trying to pull me down but generally so far, so good.

The best books I’ve read so far this year are She Who Became the Sun and The House of Rust. Both live in the category of “fantasy” and “non-American settings,” and though they both also deal with what it’s like to be born a girl and the expectations/limitations that come from that they are quite different. House of Rust really feels unique and unusual in its writing style, approach to plot/character etc. in a way that is just the right amount of challenging. She Who Became the Sun is one of the best trans main characters ever written ❤

Your recent videos have helped me a lot to understand more why I’m unhappy with my things and myself. I especially appreciated your fantasy self video; that really put things into perspective for me, and has really changed my mindset. You’ve always been a role model for me, as a fairly young person (😭), but your recent discussion about buying less stuff and feeling happy with what you have and working to be who you want to be have really stuck with me. I mean, I’ve always absorbed your advice about buying less beauty, and have actually ended up buying a lot less stuff-I-don’t-need-and-won’t-use, but THIS stuff, this recent stuff, has really hit me where I needed it to-and I just wanted to say thank you ❤

Hey, Hannah👋! If you enjoy some YA, I have to recommend the Arc of the Scythe series, by Neal Shusterman. Presently, the series has 3 full-length novels, & 1 recently-released novella. It's a sci-fi/futurism series, about a (seemingly) utopian society w/dystopian undergirding, that's unknowingly on the brink of disaster...However, it's NOT a cliché, or simply retreading past YA juggernauts. I find the richness of the world-building & characterization in the first two novels, to be incredibly special. I also don't understand why it's considered YA, except for the fact that the 2 main characters are still in their teens. The series is a dark thriller, that includes quite a bit of action & political intrigue, as well as a truly horrific, Machiavellian bad-guy. It explores some heavy anthropological & sociological concepts, but it's NOT humorless, dry, or heavy-handed. The story is fast-paced, but Shusterman still manages to deftly explore the nature of corruption, the ethics & workings of power structures, medical/scientific philosophy, the ethics of A.I., aging & the nature of family, familial vs. in-group loyalty, fate vs.self determinism, individualism vs. collectivism/societal connection, as well as many other psychological, philosophical, & anthropological/sociological concepts & questions.

Talk about relatable content. I've had a month of covid-related roller coaster health/skin/energy issues. Not helping that winter is especially tenacious this year in the Midwest. Things that have been cheering me up right now: watching Next in Fashion with my son who is super into men's fashion, baking cakes, Yoga with Adriene 30 day challenge, ending the day with a candlelit bath and playing the drums. I've been slugging with Booda Butter but I LOVE the packaging on that Futurewise. It's so much my aesthetic. As someone who's ADHD is only getting WORSE, I need to read (or listen to an audio book of) Stolen Focus! I think the Yoga with Adriene thing has been so effective for me because it is meant to be done every single day. I really vibed with "remember how much bigger the pile of garbage would be if you weren't doing the things you're doing with selfcare." I would be soooooo effed if I weren't doing the daily yoga. It really helps zap stress.

When I was in my twenties and thirties, I self-medicated by buying beautiful housewares. Lots of them! Other than the brief good feelings about tracking down and purchasing the new beautiful wine glasses, or high-end pots, or another place setting of my china, it didn't help. I needed medication for my chronic depression. So now I'm 60, still medicated, feeling much better, and I have a very well stocked kitchen!

I would encourage those who read Hari's book to also explore the criticisms of his work from neurodivergent communities and also his past breaches of journalistic ethics. Such research may not change overall feelings / opinions and it also doesn't by any means negate all of his points, but I do think it's important to be aware of how some among the groups of people he writes about have received his work.

I am so grateful for you and your videos. This kind of video is so so needed and appreciated. I’m into over a year and a half of dialectical behavioural therapy with an absolutely remarkable therapist after going through years of mental health struggles and then developing debilitating chronic illness and chronic pain. The compassion and mindfulness aspects to the therapy have done so much to not only help me heal from trauma but to also learn to live a life I find fulfilling ALONGSIDE my illnesses and struggles. You discussing these kinds of things and your own experiences with compassion practices, self care, and mindfulness and how they can literally change the brain and, thus, your life in such meaningful ways is so beautiful, validating, and reflective of the journey I’ve been on. Thank you and take care. ❤❤❤

DBT is so comforting in some ways insofar as learning to structure your thinking differently... especially if you (like I) suffer with BPD. On the flip side it can frustrate in the realization that our brains are often wired to think in a very selfish, myopic way. It has overall, helped me to take on the discipline of learning how to set boundaries on my thinking processes. Good luck in the journey. ..from a fellow Sojourner.❤

I don’t have BPD but I do struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD/trauma, panic disorder, OCD, and I struggle with grief because of my illnesses (which are also the cause of my PTSD) so I’ve struggled A LOT with a very negative perception of myself/my mind/my body while also feeling EXTREMELY scared, vulnerable, overwhelmed, and protective of myself at the same time, in order to avoid MORE pain/discomfort/trauma. This has lead to many years of me not really living my life out of fear and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness but also being extremely self critical and a perfectionist only with myself. DBT has helped IMMENSELY in terms of helping me reframe many of my fears/thoughts/behaviours, set goals and boundaries, and repair my relationship with myself, and, thus, others. I’m so glad it has helped you too. It’s always good to know that, while we do have to walk our own journey through life, we can do it alongside others. Take care. ❤❤❤

@@meghangerhart643 on the days when you feel like you can't go on, when you feel like no one is there for you, when it hurts just to lift a breath into your lungs, I pray for you. I understand your journey. I have all of the elements of mental health issues that you embody, along with BPD. To say that I understand you would be an understatement. I know in those dark moments when we feel so alone. You are not alone however. There is a great fellowship of humans that suffer in the same manner and are finding our way. I also happen to believe there is a sovereign power that oversees us and knows what we're going through, one that we can lean on during those times. Life is a precious commodity that those of us with these issues, sometimes have to squander. I say this because we are left languishing in bed, in pain and frustration mentally and physically. Reach deep within and find the source of strength that you need sweetie to bring you through and get you around others once again. I plead with you not to shut your life down when you're feeling this way, but rather to reach out. Easier said than done. My prayers, my heart and my empathy go out to you precious one. God bless you. ❤️

Hi Hannah! Thank you for being so vulnerable in sharing how you've been feeling. It's so refreshing, and I feel you. I hope the garbage feeling dissipates ASAP. I can't wait to pick up Stolen Focus. I'm wondering if it will also help my 8th grade English teacher husband process his students not being able to focus.

Ooooh, not me clicking on this video as I sit in a sick little lump on the couch, my intrepid fever punching right through that DayQuil Severe, as I avoid looking at the novel I’m trying to write because it’s making me exhausted and sad…hah. You’re a hero. ❤

Ahhh I just love your KZfaq account. Your content, and your speaking is so enjoyable. 😊 When I watch some KZfaqrs, they seem so wealthy, like they just have it all, and have their lives so put together. You, however, seem to have everything, but you also seem so down to Earth, and so refreshingly relatable. I can’t wait to see your new wine glasses, and your fancy schmancy wardrobe 😆

I read the Scholomance trilogy and adored it! I immediately placed the Scholomance series in my category of books I lovingly call hairdryer books. These are books I love so much, I even read them while doing mundane things like drying my hair because I just want to fill all my time with them. I haven’t read “Uprooted”, though. I put it on my Kindle before the video was even over ! I’m going to read Stolen Focus as well because if you consider it a “must read” that’s good enough for me! I loved your collages of glasses! I would totally do the same thing! Loved the color you chose!

I used to really enjoy Johann Hari’s journalism in the early 2010s, but he’s been implicated in a string of journalism scandals since then and now I find it difficult to trust any of his non-fiction work.

I, too, have been feeling like a pile of garbage lately so this is exactly the video I needed! Thank you, Hannah ❤ I love seeing Naomi Novik get recommended more and more - I found her through her Temeraire series back in my late teens/early 20s. If you want dragons in the Napoleonic Wars, that's the series I would recommend. My reading, lately, though, has been leaning more towards scifi/"cozy" scifi - I read Finna, which was very short and character-driven, and next up on my list is The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz, and (finally) Becky Chambers' The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. Something that I think definitely has helped lately as well has been my break from Instagram - I took the app off my phone at the start of the New Year and haven't logged in since. I may return to it, but it's been nice exploring the internet like it's 2010 again (Tumblr, Pinterest, and KZfaq have been my social media vices so far).

Stolen Focus is one of those books that grabs your mind. Weeks after finishing, I'm still thinking and talking about it. Every once in a while, something from it will chug across my mind. Definitely a must read. May I also recommend Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman? That title is also mind changing in a completely different, but wonderful way

Ah yes, desperately needed a video in this vein right now! I've been waiting a couple of days for apartment maintenance to complete a not insignificant repair; it's always surprising to what degree frustration with a living space can bleed into every other aspect of life. I haven't yet totally eliminated screentime in bed, but downloading a solitaire mahjong app and the relaxation of matching tiles over the stimulation of the endless scroll has helped me so much in getting to sleep. Never heard of "Stolen Focus" before, but it's absolutely going on the to-read list!

Georgette Heyer's regency rom coms (perhaps the Grand Sophy or Cotillion to start) and Terry Pratchett (particularly the witches) are my two go tos for absolutely needing the comfort. Mary Wesley and Agatha Christie (latter on audio) were my Covid comforts and I recommend either.

I love the "what's cheering me up" content. Regarding books, I've enjoyed both the Scholomance trilogy and Gideon the Ninth (though I haven't finished that trilogy). It's a different kind of story, but maybe you'd like the Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon if you haven't already taken a stab/read it. The prequel to it just came out recently (I haven't gotten to read that yet). While there's a significant amount of worldbuilding, it's less about a new magic system so much as a wide cast of characters with different motivations and opinions that affect one another. The books are also huge, >800 pages each, so even at inhaling book reading speeds, Priory kept me busy for a good amount of time.

I actually did also read Priory this year! It was such a page-turner for me! But I had forgotten about the prequel, I will def put it on my list.
