Side notes: -Dva was a pro starcraft player, due to her skills, she got in the military program and became a mech pilot -that "boop" thing Sombra does is a threat. If u look carefully, the president has a picture "boop-ing" her child. She's basically telling her "I know where she lives"

Motivations for the Bad Guys: Reaper: butt-hurt over Morrison being promoted to command of Overwatch over his head (he'd been the superior before that), he's now a leader of Talon. Widowmaker: psychologically tortured and biologically augmented to kill her husband (a French prosecutor investigating Talon), she's now an assassin in Talon Sombra: born into poverty, she learned how to hack computers, and put those skills to use acquiring secrets that she uses to blackmail people - why she works for Talon is anyone's guess. In game, Reaper would ask, "Where's Sombra when you need her?," and there were even Easter-eggs on some of the levels - a dossier about someone with that name that couldn't be interacted with, or just graffiti like 'Who is Sombra?'. It lead to a lot of fan-speculation, so there was a lot of hype when the 'Infiltration' teaser came out (followed by in-game clips of the character in action).

I LOVE the propoganda hero bits for DVa. They just play losing 4 of the 5 mechs defending the city and being down to Hana as taking a few hits. She's out celebrating instead of staying in working on her mech. She seems so superficial in her persona, but she's actually really serious and a soldier who is far too young. It's great.

Overwatch uses it's cinematics to reveal new characters and build on story. So when you see a new person in a cinematic, you're seeing them for the first time just like we do.

Talon/Blackwatch with Reaper (Ghost guy), Widowmaker (sniper) and Sombra all have their backstories in the origins, you should watch them. And if you really want to know more there are also the short comics you can read online. Reaper was a member of Overwatch and Widowmaker was the wife of an Overwatch member.

Shooting Star is definitely the most removed from the overall Overwatch story. It's very confusing unless you know a lot of the lore.

2 ANSWERS AND A WARNING: D.Va was an e-sports star turned ace pilot, I think you were talking over that part. And for the avengers style team up its 50/50 these show the background for a lot of the characters that you can only see in the game but some of them team up in the next video in the series. After that video there's a super short teaser trailer "we are overwatch" that may or may not be necessary (if you are going for another 2 video episode go for it, otherwise nah) then there's the credits followed by 2 videos about overwatch's crossover with another game. There's no story in those and unless you know what Heros of The Storm is they will be completely confusing so don't watch them

Dva friend zoning hard >.> like super hard Sombra is my favorite character in the game character wise. She's so believable as an actual person not a "video game character" kind of like how Reaper and some of the other more fantastic characters are. Her personality and inflection seems totally believable, her actions make sense from a personal stand point and she's motivated by very human wants and interests. Her voice actor does amazing with her.

Little tid bit about Sombra's "Boop" that I don't think a lot of people realise. It's not a catchphrase of hers, at least not one she came up with. It's another mental game with Katya. There's a picture of her with her daughter doing the same gestures (Look on the desk next to Sombra, lower right corner when she reaches for the other photo of Katya's daughter), so Sombra doing the same thing is her saying "By the way. I know EVERYTHING, not just your arms dealing secrets" though her amused smirk at the end is probably her thinking "That's fun actually, I think I'll keep using that" before doing it to the screen.

Hmm, i noticed the "Junkertown" short wasnt in there. Well it is a bit short of a short, but it is fully animated unlike the "comic" style extras & does introduce new chars. Might be worth a quick watch.

Trying to "get it" for every specific detail behind everything is only going to lead to confusion lol. These aren't a cohesive continuing story, they're trailers/teasers for each character in the game. They don't have time to explain everything. Fun one-off shorts, that take place in the same universe. Edit: That's how most game trailers or cinematics work, they don't intentionally explain everything, it's supposed to leave you wanting more, to play the game or find out more.

since the game currently has 20 something or 30 something characters (with more on the way) i would imagine creating a backstory & motivation for each would be one of the most difficult things Blizzard could ever do for ONE of their games. i would love to sit in and listen to that creative process!!

Hi, Hannah. I belatedly discovered your channel and I've more or less binged your uploads that involved games that I'm familiar with/personally play. Great job on the reactions; definitely one of the more engaging KZfaqrs I watch in this context. In any case, I'm late to the party but I wanted to explain some things, even though the others here already managed to get into it: It was already explained, but I just want to add to it; D.VA (or Hana Song) used to be an e-sports gamer, primarily a player of Starcraft (because it's a Blizzard IP, and they wanted to tie that in) and it makes sense, given that Starcraft is considered an official e-sport in Korea even in this day and age (which you might have already heard of). Moving on, people have already mentioned that fast reaction time, problem-solving skills and awareness that are usually developed by hardcore or competitive gamers may have been a consideration of the Korean military to recruit e-sports gamers like D.VA into a specialized branch of the army. For the video Shooting Star, I don't know if you got the same feeling, but it gave me Pacific Rim vibes; for one, the fact that they have a base that's the frontline defense fortress for the Omnics, and another is the fact that mech-pilots like D.VA and here crew are considered celebrities in the way Jager pilots are rockstars in the Pacific Rim universe. As you saw, the media definitely paints these celebrity-gamer-soldiers like invincible badasses who live in the lap of luxury, even though it clearly shows the opposite for Hana, who has PTSD, and a great paranoia of the Omnics adapting, learning, and becoming stronger; it's implied during the flashback of their last battle where most of her team was defeated by the Omnics that she saw that their enemies were indeed learning and becoming more formidable, which is why she wants nothing more than to stay, run diagnostics, and get ready for the next fight. As far as D.VA as a character is concerned, it can definitely get confusing for a non-gamer because, as has been explained, she's an e-sports superstar, and their culture definitely rests on the far side of gaming where it's competitive and mechanical; you can see this in the way she talks when she first deploys against the Omnics, which made you feel like she's playing a game/simulation rather than actually fighting them. End of the day, I think it's implied that the e-sports gaming lingo and the tough girl attitude is just her way of coping with the fact that she's a 19 year-old thrust into a soldier's life she didn't necessarily ask for. At least that's my take on Hana Song/D.VA's psychology. Anyway, that was a long tirade. Hope it explains some things, as Shooting Star definitely showed more action than heart, in terms of the Overwatch shorts as a whole. You're not alone in feeling that way :)

I’m sure you don’t care... but for the first one about D.Va, she used to be a e-sports champion (a gamer) and then she became a MEKA pilot, in real life. The thing she was in was a mech she built herself. The robots she was fighting are trying to destroy the city. Since she’s a celebrity, the news tries to make everything sound way better than it actually is, and it seems kinda like a game. Her gaming experience makes her great for piloting the mech because the controls are similar to that of a game :)

The thing with Overwatch story is that it's being told through various media. There is no single story to follow, instead the narrative can be pieced from cinematics, comics, short stories, character bios (most of those can be found on the game's website). Playing the game would not clear a lot, as it's focused on 6 vs 6 matches, which are not delivering the story in any way. There are bits and pieces on the arenas in game, or in the short exchanges between certain characters. Myself, I love that sort of emergent storytelling, piecing together fragments of information, wondering what are the implications of a new line of dialogue etc. but I also get, why some might not be that much into it. That is also why Overwatch 2 will have more straightforward story missions, but that's still in the future.

I think you’ve covered all the cinematic shorts and just left with “The Story So Far” which is a good recap of all the shorts you’ve watched and finally “Zero Hour” where everything (mostly) comes together. You could watch some origin stories, but they’re mostly 2D animations and imho don’t really give enough backstory that you would hope for. Can’t wait till you watch the remaining cinematic shorts! 🖖🏽😬

I suggest you also check out "Origin stories" of characters. Those are shorter 2D animation videos, which introduce more characters and purely dive into their actual background. They have a lot of nice details to them too. You were curious how Reaper became a smoke monster man, you can see more about that in those videos, as one of the characters in them is the scientist who turned him into that.

tgn makes videos called the complete history and lore of they have ones for every character as well as a timeline of the overwatch story as a whole

Reapers backstory is basically the same as soldier 76 except the evil twin brother. Exceptional soldier always got the job done, eventually his thirst for mayhem and collateral damage sidelined him until he went to work for talon, there a doctor who's a character in the game named "Moira" experimented on him and made him what he is. It's a lot more involed but that's the easiest.

Fyi, in that last clip, Widowmaker is very suspicious and is onto sombra, as she says she does not miss, and that plan was perfect so she knows something had to have gone terribly wrong.

I don't know if you've already finished it, but just so you don't get confused, the last two cinematics in that KZfaq video, where you are watching all of these animations, are not at all a part of the Overwatch story. Those are cinematics for a different game that has crossovers from all of Blizzard's different games (Heroes of the Storm).

Each of these shorts have been based around different playable characters in-game. Winston, mei (china), Soldier 76 (USA) & tracer (UK) are X Overwatch members. Hanzo was neutral and became a member of Overwatch and Genji & Macree were originally was Talon before he got wise to there plan and defected to overwatch. Reaper, Widow, Sombra are part of a group known as Talon (insignia on there shoulder) The last character in "infiltration" was Zarya (Russia) the idea was to have a hero representing each country. but as the roster grew more of there nationality's came out such as Ana & Pharah (Egypt), Macree & Soldier 76 (USA), Hanzo & Genji (Japan) and finally Torbjorn & Brigette (Sweden) I love Overwatch, ive watched the shorts as they have appeared year after year, read the manga and short stories they release on the official website and about 1000 hours over 4 years on the actual game, personally im excited to see Overwatch 2 news at Blizzcon early 2021 :D

Girl- listen. So the reason why you aren’t seeing any team fight sorta thing is because this are the videos for the release of characters. The OW 2 teaser has that kind of style. Sombra (during the Omnic Crisis, a war where robots called Omnics turned against human kind, Olivia from a young age started hacking. She’s now the most notorious hacker in the world), Widowmaker (the blue chic. She was kidnapped by a terrorist organization called Talon, well get to that later, and brainwashed into killing her husband which gives her the name Widowmaker. The experiments made her heart beat slow down, which made her one of the best snipers in the world with the exception of Ana, but also turned her blue), Reaper (guy with the skull face and black cloak. Tragic really, used to be the head of Overwatch until the guy from the short ‘Hero’ became popular and took his place. He joined Talon out of spite and anger. Moira, scientist of Talon who also experimented on Widowmaker gave him the ability to turn into smoke, but it failed leaving him that way permanently). There’s a few more in Talon but those are just the ones from the video ‘Infiltration’. Overwatch: D.Va Former gamer champion that retired to join the Meka Military, not much to say about her but her and sombra are my main so I’ll give you a little personality. Loves Doritos and Mountain Dew a little too much.. sassy and cute, has a love connection with Lucio POSSIBLY, and her Ultimate ability line ( her ult being the explosion) is “Nerf This!” because she got nerfed so much and also she’s a gamer. The part in the animation where she says “I’ll see you at the finish line” always makes me tear up. All in all (my opinion): Dva: 1000000000/10 (super biased but she’s funny!) Widowmaker: 8/10 (not a fan of sniping myself BUT her backstory is a 10/10) Sombra: 10000000/10 (biased) Reaper: 10/10 (cool voice) Hope this helps

Just to clear up on Talon. No one really knows their motives other than that they're a terrorist group. But Reaper A.K.A Gabriel Reyes used to work in the military got his veteran status and worked as the leader of the special ops team for Overwatch known as Blackwatch. Then he was supposedly dead in a terrible explosion at one of the overwatch headquarters with Soldier 76 but they both miraculously survived while Reaper was technically dead. Then he was revived with a science experiment where he can as you could see go through a smoky ghostlike state at will and he could basically never die. But he was described to be in a constant hell like agony. And now he works for talon doing assasinations and everything. Widowmaker is just a sniper who trained to slow her heart and be cold to the point where her skin is blue and Sombra is just a hacker. Just a godly one.

So in a lot of sci-fi stories that take place in the future, humans tend to adapt to wave invasions and treat it as entertainment.

So Reaper, Black smoke dude, was a member of Overwatch and lead their covert ops Team Blackwatch. He led an attempted coup against the leader of Overwatch, Soldier 76. The two fought and both were thought dead, shortly after Overwatch was shut down. Both Reaper and Solider 76 were subjects before they joined to a top secret super soldier program. Something (never explained what) happened in the fight between him and Soldier 76 that made him into the near wraith like being that he now is. Widowmaker, French sniper, was also a member of Overwatch, and married to a member of it. A criminal group called Talon had captured her, brain washed her into bombing an Overwatch facility which killed her husband, and she joined Talon permanently. She was modified to have a very slow pulse, and be physically cold, hence the bluish skin.

It's all hand drawn drawings with the characters doing a voice over. Really cool stuff if you want to learn more about them. They're on KZfaq. So the robots in the world are called Omnics. Someone somewhere released a piece of software globally giving Omnics sentience. There was a global war following this event which is why Overwatch was created.

McCree the cowboy used to be close friends with the ashen haired chick called Ashe,they were both part of the deadlock gang but one of their operations went wrong and McCree got cought by Overwatch.He was offered a choice:rot in prison or join Blackwatch,Overwatch's covert ops division.McCree agreed to join and make amends for his mistakes and eventually managed to turn his life around,meanwhile Ashe became the head of Deadlock.They haven't seen each other until what we see in the cinematic short,that was indeed their "reunion".

Every character has a background story that you can read online. Or you watch the animated "Origin Stories" on the Overwatch youtube channel, they are also pretty good.

Oh no, I need to wait two weeks for my favourite :P Actually the last two of the video you're watching are "teasers" from another Blizzard game which is Heroes of the Storm where they put some characters from their different games (Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft, Overwatch etc.) to fight each other 5v5 so I'm predicting your confusion watching demons fighting aliens and humans lol. Btw, if you want to know the stories of the Overwatch characters there are some origin stories videos for some of them, however they're not as entertaining as the shorts you've watched

Overwatch's storyline is really confusing. Blizzard created the game out of scraps from a failed Project. They ended up with a "hero-shooter" that has no real storymode and try to tell the plot via those Cinematics, Comics and short stories. But all the Characters and their Backdrop do exist before those storylines are explored. They don't all fit into one another. Also they aren't told in chronological order (ages don#t really make sense at all) so the Lore is just all over the place.

To explain D.va a bit further. In real life StarCraft and especially StarCraft: Brood Wars expansion became such a huge hit in South Korea that people started referring to it as South Koreas national sport, unironically. Starcraft to Korea is like American Football to the USA, absolutely freaking massive. As a result, when the e-sport scene rose up, South Korea DOMINATED the world and still does to this day. Overall, ever since its publication, there was a Korean crowned as World Champion in every single year to date. The only exception was the 2018 World Championship when for the first time a foreigner (Non-Korean player in the Starcraft scene) won the World Championship, a Finnish player named Joona "Serral" Sotala. Another thing to note is that there has never been a female World Champion. The closes there ever was was with Scarlett, a transgendered player from the USA. With D.va, Blizzard wanted to prophecize and promote the possibility of a feamle e-sports star rising to the occation and getting the crown. As such, D.va has the honor of being the first female Starcraft World Champion, even if fictitious. However, upon the reveal of D.va as a character, Blizzard created a player profile under her name and she has an official Starcraft profile, albeit with 0 games played as of yet. But then again, Overwatch IS set in the future. Some tidbits of lore that are never really explained in these cinematics: a couple decades ago, Overwatch was founded to deal with an insurgence of Artificially intelligent robots: the Omnics. As a result, the robots are generally an oppressed class, even though they are capable of pain, emotions, and free thought and stuff like that. I don't think it's ever explained how the crisis was resolved, but it is known that there was a rogue faction of Overwatch called Blackwatch that was so atrocious that it basically turned public opinion against them. I'm not sure what they did or why, but that's why the former members are persona non grata and in hiding. Some of the heroes are inspired by their example, or the children of the heroes. Others are omnics (like Bastion), mostly reformed. Some are actually 'enhanced', revived versions of heroes thought dead. And still others are part of a terrorist organisation called Talon, but honestly I can't tell you for sure what their deal is. My best guess is they're anti-omnic terrorists. In my estamation, the emotional core of these trailers is pretty simple and the details may be interesting but not necessary to get it. Like I think the girl in the Mech is kind of supposed to be an e-sports champion that got hired to pilot mechs in the Omnic crisis because of her skills.

After watching a bunch of your reactions to these game trailers and shorts I have to suggest you check out an animated short called "Kara" by Quantic Dream. Originally this was a stand alone short film designed to show off the capabilities of the Playstation 3 and not connected to a game at all. Eventually both the character and the concepts in the film were turned into a game called "Detroit: Become Human". Widowmakers backstory (Blue sniper french baddie girl) *Talon - The terrorist organization which reaper (black ghost dude) and many more are apart off, is also the main bad guys of the overwatch lore. Basically she used to be a normal woman living a regularly life as a balette dancer. Her husband was an Overwatch agent focused on the Terrorist organization Talon*, Talon wanted to kill him really bad, but they never suceeded. Until they came up with the plan to capture his wife (Widowmaker aka Amalie) and turn her against him. They captured Amelie and brainwashed her, then they sent her home with the mission to kill her husband. She killed him in his sleep. Then she returned to talon where they lowered her heart rate which caused her skin to turn blue and all her emotions to go away. After that, the woman named Amelie was gone and had become the Widowmaker.
