In my opinion, their relationship has MANY layers, one of the most interesting is the fact that Hannibal started seeing Will as just one more to be manipulated, but ended up becoming interested in him until he got to a point where he became, in a way , romantic. The same for Will, who at first hated him, then hated him even more for not wanting to admit he was interested too. I believe all the "bad" thing Will did for Hannibal was because he struggled endlessly with his own feelings not to admit that he liked him, until, in the end (or even long before that) he accepted it. I believe their need to be together goes beyond "oh yeah, we have the same ideologies, so let's stay together", but it's something much bigger, something I still don't know how to put into words, and even though it is , somehow, grotesque and very strange, at the same time it is strangely romantic and beautiful.

I didn't watch the serial as it's very dark, but can tell that any role played by Mads always reflects his charisma, even the last villain has some sort of charm, it's because of his masterful play and something unique, which makes Mads stand out from the crowd, not just appearance.

To me Hannibal and Will are soulmates. That type of relationship can superficially appear to be parental, a friendship, a partnership, etc. However, people who turn out to be soulmates have extremely intense versions of those types of relationships, leaving others in their lives feeling like they are intruding. These relations can remain non-sexual but, no matter what, they do not end. Even if separated the pair continue to obsess over the other. Once reunited things might be rocky but the passion and obsession is still there. An example of this is Hannibal/Will vs Will/Alana. Will and Alana were attracted to each other in season one. By The Red Dragon arc, Will didn't know Alana had a kid with Margot. However, one conversation with Hannibal and they fall right back in step with each other. Will and Alana had a physical attraction and mutual respect. Once one was lost their relationship died. Will and Hannibal were two souls longing for each other. Repeated betrayal and hurt doesn't kill their bond, nothing really can. "Hate is not the opposite of love. Indifference is." Kimberly Lewis (RIP)

also note that it's probably panromantic, as sex is probably a device to use against people (E.G. an alibi, such as with Alanah) and probably something he wouldn't do by his own desire

As much as he kills his victims without any remorse he still feels a huge emotional need for Will, not only in the series but even in the movies he seems to be interested, in his own way, in Clarice Starling, so...nah, I think that he is not a psychopath

Brilliant insight. He got the character and motivation straight away it seems. After rewatching the show I know and see exactly what he means. I felt it the first time but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Hannibal has extraction to Will immediately. He can literally smell and feel it. Its odd defining Hannibal because he thinks hes god. That much is certain. And at first he appears to have no feelings. Labeling him as a Psychopath or possibly sociopath. But he grows these emotions. Meets someone who questions his own psychology and morality. Someone who makes him want to live and possibly regret his choices maybe and death as he never has. He at one point claims death as thrilling cause he can live life the fullest but after years with Will I think he decides that a death would take away the life he has now with Will in it. But if he can somehow die with Will beside him and seeing how he views life, love, and meaning...then thats his purpose. No longer does he think himself as God by the final episode. That whole ideology has vanished by the love he truly has for Will. Thats all he cares about. Possibly seeing that the feeling of love itself is God. The polar opposite of the church building collapses he collects through the show.

And brilliantly written. I havent seen the series (found the story too macabre and unhealthy - so it didn't appeal to me) But reading your analysis, makes me realize that there are many layers, depth and psykologi in it, as well. Not just the fascination of a sick and dangerous mind.

OMG I am so envy of everyone that attended the Fanexpo about 5 years ago! The series is about Will meeting Hannibal. The show runner Bryan Fuller and others involved has created a masterpiece that made more sense to Will and Hannibal's relationship (friendship, love or something that can’t be named due to the fact Hannibal is a psychopath) compare to Clarice. I love the books and how it ended. However, the show has given the audience a different story but close to the original work. Fuller recently had stated in “Hannibal Reunion” that Hannibal is pansexual and Will straight. It was clarified In the first episode Will has a high empathy disorder which helps him feel and think like the killers. He is so good at his job that it would not be a surprise if he empathize Hannibal's psychopathic obsession towards him .

any kind of love from Hannibal isn't that simple either so whether he loves Will platonically or romantically (it really does read as more romantic tho hehehehe) it's not gonna be simple and I think that was portrayed very well in the series and by the actors :)

I agree with him. It was a bromance. That was geniune platonic love from the two men, and not something more. People who think otherwise have never come across this kind of thing, I've seen it in multiple stories, like in Arabic poetry and the french book "En l'absence des hommes" written by Philippe Besson.

@@incognitox9551 I think it's genuinely a romantic love; there's very little grey area in Will's question of "Is Hannibal in love with me?" and Bedelia's response. However, I think Hannibal is asexual. It's possible for asexual individuals to feel romantic feelings toward someone without feeling anything sexual. Asexual people can and do have romantic relationships.

Their relationship is sexual and romantic. You need to watch Hannibal series to understand it. The creator and writer already admit they are in romantic relationship, and there’s a scene where Will getting shot and Hannibal bring him to his house ... the way of Hannibal hugging him, you can see his facial expression it’s lust, like sexual desire lust.

Mads mikkelsen who literally plays the character and perfectly captures him : its a bromance not a romantic type of love idiots : its a romantic relationship i really miss the days when bonding and friendship without it being something sexual was a thing ,it just disgusts me at this point ,almost every two characters regardless of gender who have a strong bonds are instantly shippable by fans ,i think these type of people really need to experience these types of relationships to know what it means to have a friend who they can connect with not only do you consider them friends but part of you and yes believe it or not you can have these types of relationships without fucking each other

he didn't say it wasn't romantic, he said "it's not that kind of love" in response to the audience's "awwww" because it's not love at first sight in a cute way because hannibal is uh a cannibal. but romantic and sexual subtext is very much there in the series, on purpose, because that's how their relationship is even if it's not necessarily acted upon. it's definitely not just a close friendship lmao

he's literally said it's romantic in other interviews. it isn't actively sexual but it is in fact romantic. There's a difference between saying "I love you" and "I'm in love with you", the latter being very obviously a romantic gesture. The entire cast including the creator, Bryan Fuller, have revealed that Hannibal is romantically attracted to Will. Fuller also said Hannibal is sexually attracted to Will but would not have sex with him unless he was mentally stable. If you're disgusted by it then you have something to reevaluate. Grow up.

Mads literally makes a face whenever Dancy said it was platonic. It's extremely complicated; Mads and the writers/producers all agree it's more than platonic Also note that Mads in this doesn't know what really bromance means, especially since english isn't his first language. They are more than friends, but they aren't sexual.

You don't have to "ship" it, but their relationship IS romantic. And the romantic side of their relationship isn't even subtext. It's just text. "Is Hannibal in love with me?" real line. In this universe, Will takes on the role of Clarice from the books, as Hannibal's love interest. S4 would involve Hannibal and Will together on the run, in S5 they're finally going to have sex with each other (according to Bryan Fuller).

@@pemo2676 I have no doubts that the sexual component will become a part of their bond later on. Bryan Fuller actually said he's planning to adding it in S5. Neither Hannibal nor Will are asexuals and they are canonically in love, so I don't see the reason why this side of their relationship shouldn't be included. And there are already some scenes of sexual subtext that suggests that they are sexually attracted to each other (like the ortolans scene, or Will's sexual fantasy featuring wendigo). Plus Will takes on the role of Clarice from the books, as Hannibal's love interest in this show, so If one romantic relationship is sexual then I don't know why the other wouldn't be when they are directly connected in that way.
