Vietnam Vlogs S01-E03
After five years away from Hanoi, the allure of a long-distance bike ride was too strong to resist. With my sights set on a 1,500km journey from Hanoi to Saigon sometime in the future, I embarked on a day trip to test the local roads, traffic, and the unforgiving tropical weather.
Renting a bike from a highly-rated spot near Ho Tay lake, I was initially disappointed to end up with the rental place's oldest and most worn-out model. However, the gears proved surprisingly capable, especially with a generously sized front ring.
Navigating the narrow, traffic-choked streets of Hanoi proved to be a daunting task. The thick fog from air pollution further hindered visibility, making me regret my decision to leave my COVID mask behind.
Despite the challenges, the scenery around Ho Tay lake was a welcome respite. As the route led me to wider, quieter roads, I admired the dedication of sellers balancing their wares on their bicycles.
The riding conditions, while more exciting compared to my previous cycling adventures in Italy, were also more demanding. The hot and humid weather combined with air pollution made for a grueling experience.
Humorous obstacles added to the adventure, such as a street blocked by a wedding celebration and unexpected roadblocks. Along the way, the ubiquitous presence of billiard clubs, each with a single room and table for rent, provided a glimpse into Vietnamese culture.
Once out of the city, I hoped for a respite from the air pollution, but the humidity remained unrelenting. August, with its stifling temperatures and suffocating air, proved to be an inhospitable month for bikepacking.
Dehydration set in, and my iPhone, already struggling in the heat, started shutting down every 15 minutes. Yet, witnessing the resilience of families selling drinks and fruit on the roadside fueled my determination to push through.
A stop at a grocery store brought a welcome reprieve, but a close call with overcharging almost ruined my moment of relief. The storekeeper's honesty saved the day, and I ended up having a pleasant chat with her.
Finally returning to the familiar streets of Hanoi, I was grateful for the shade and the predictability of the route. The day's adventure had been a rollercoaster of challenges and unexpected encounters, leaving me with a lifetime memories.
