Ein wunderbarer Titel, wie auch andere von Weigelschmidt. Und im Lange "Jazz in Deutschland" finde ich kein Wort über ihn...

Right at the end of the Tempelhof film clip [at 2.28] , the KLM DC-3 airliner 'PH-ALI' can be seen. This aircraft, carrying civilians and a Dutch crew, was wearing camouflage paint and the prominent British civilian registration 'G-AGBB' when it was shot down in daylight by the Luftwaffe in June 1943, while on its way from Lisbon to the airfield at Whitchurch, near Bristol : no-one survived. One passenger was the British film actor Leslie Howard. Also in view was Swedish-registered 'SE-BAB', another DC-3 which survived with Swedish and other airlines until scrapped, after standing derelict from the mid-'60s, in 1972.

The "PAUL BILLICK" named on the Junkers airliner 'D-AKUO" was a WW1 fighter-ace who died in 1926, still in his 30s.

The clip shows the Focke-Wulf-built 'Condor' airliner, one of the best pre-war European long-range airliners. None survived the war but veteran German engineers have managed to reconstruct a static (non-flyable) example from the corroded remains of a military version of the design that was salvaged from the seabed decades after it had forced-landed on the sea off Norway.

I understand that the Condor was subject to structural failure. I've seen photos of one sitting on a hardstand where the portside wing broke at the fuselage. Another one where the fuselage broke at about the point where the passenger door is. Do you have any info on that?

@@lawrencelewis2592 The Condor was a relatively lightweight airliner and the bomber version overloaded the airframe with military equipment: something had to give..

@@lawrencelewis2592 The British "Mosquito" aircraft needed a strengthened fuselage when the prototype suffered a fuselage 'break' similar to that to which 'Condors' in Luftwaffe service suffered when landing.

@@None-zc5vg Thanks- I've seen pictures of the Hawker Typhoon that had broken aft of the cockpit and they had to be reinforced in that area.

Seen in the film-clip: is a four-engined Junkers Ju 90 airliner "D-ASND" : this plane was developed from an unwanted heavy bomber design, the Ju 89, that could have been more valuable than the smaller He 111s used instead by the Luftwaffe. Only later in the war did an improved, military bomber/transport version of the Ju 90, the Ju 290, appear on the scene, too late and in small numbers. "D-ASND" was impressed into Luftwaffe service and was shot down by British fighters over the Mediterranean in 1944 (photographed by a gun-camera) Unlike many early airliners, the Ju-90 had an unobstructed fuselage interior that made it easy to load passengers and freight.

Aus welcher Quelle stammen die Aufnahmen von Tempelhof? Ich hatte vor Monaten das Video gesehen, aber finde es nicht mehr. Da war noch Originalton dazu mit Reporter. Kannst Du mir einen Link geben? Danke.
