Mohammed Rafi was THE BEST MALE VOCALIST during the Golden period of Indian Cinema. His duets with the equally legendary Lata Mangeshkar are eternal. Rafi’s sultry vocals and the rollercoaster rhythm changing arrangements with orchestral, jazz, western fusion is fantastic. Far better than today’s western influenced songs where the Indian-ness is gone. Please check out ‘Jahan pehchan ho’ from 1960s film Gumnaam. It’s a rocker by Rafi. The song was used in an a Heineken Beer advert many years ago in Europe and became internationally loved. Many non-Indians have covered it - country rock, Jazz, alternative versions. The non-Hindi speaking artists have sung in Hindi. A great tribute to the song and to Rafi. The very 60s dance sequence in the film is a knockout … you’ll love it 😊

Hi Jimmy and Deniz! Dunno much about the movie. The songs are still sung though…they were an enormous hit while I was a lad in school and they were played incessantly in the radio. The two Lata singles are beautiful. Quintessential Madan Mohan creations curated especially for Lata. Both he and RD Burman would compose songs specifically for Lata. Some interesting factoids about the people involved. The director Chetan Anand is the younger bro of Dev Anand, who would’ve been 100 yesterday. Balraj Sahni was the erudite founder of the actors guild and was a Marxist and English lit scholar; and the father of Parikshit Shahni. Two notable movies of Balraj : Do Bigha Zameen and Garm Hawa. Both leftist messages. Both films worth watching once. Priya Rajvansh was Chetan Anand’s mistress. She was murdered after Chetan died, prolly killed by Chetan’s son who wanted the property the dad had given Priya. I’m sure a film must’ve been made about this murky yet juicy affair. 😀

Good recommendation although this was in mohd Rafi 's later years when he was eclipsed by kishore. Listen to songs from 1950s 60s. Guru dutt, Dev Anand films or some from Rajendra kumar's. Intriguing song but not close to his best work
