How good is the Hantek CC-650 for automotive testing? In this video, we review and test the Hantek CC-650 Amp Clamp with the PicoScope 2204A. We perform a general current measurement, test an ignition coil and an injector. We also see if it is capable for performing a parasitic battery current drain test. Hantek make a couple of current clamps, this is the larger 650A model.
See me use the Hantek CC-650 for a relative compression test:

I also have 2204A, for my automotive hobby, but I bought Hantek CC-65. I only had budget for one current clamp and chose 65 A version, because it is more precise on smaller currents and in most cases it is below 20A, and 65A should be enough for everything except current draw for starer diagnosis, and maybe testing some alternator limits when charging back half-discharged battery. You can do relative compression without measuring current, battery voltage during cranking shows very similar waveform , only inverted - smaller voltage = larger current, you can't tell how many Amps go to stater, but you can clearly see compression events and compare cylinders.

Gatis Zvejnieks Totally agree! Yes the CC-65 is much better for low current signal. It a shame the clamping jaws are so small! I have not done the voltage compression test before, maybe I will try this another time. Thanks for watching!

@@MechanicMindset Great that someone is taking the time to show that cheaper on-automotive scope can be used in automotive applications. I have some suggestions/ideas for your future videos. Those videos might be interesting for me as an owner of picoscope 2204A. You can make picoscope waveforms more zoomable by using streaming mode. Most of the things I described in this comment can be found in video called "How to capture ZOOMABLE waveforms with Pico 2204A, or Streaming vs Block Modes" by dmitry L. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZOHfZSS0Me6c6s.html After using his suggestions picoscope 2204A became so much more automotive friendly. In your videos you only change timebase, but leave "Auto" 8kS per screen, that is built in sample memory for picoscope 2204A after stopping capture you can't zoom in captured waveform. You can click views - > view properties and on the right side of screen you will see how low of a sample rate is used (on slower time bases it will be only several of kS/s instead of advertised 100MS/s). Picoscope 2000A series picoscopes will go to 1MS/s per channel in streaming mode and 2000B series will go up to 9.6MS/s or something similar in streaming mode. Then you can use relatively slow time base, but fast sample rate and later zoom in waveform. But if you go slower than 200Ms/div picoscope software will start to drop sample rate, look at real sample rate in settings and play with time base to get the best zoomability. Another thing is to use "resolution enhancement" instead of 8 bits can use up to 12 bits for better readability. It does not increase vertical precision, but is some kind of digital filter that makes waveform look smoother and easier to read. It can be applied after the measurement is captured and saved in 8 bit resolution, that is the native vertical resolution for all 2000 series picoscopes. "Automotive" picoscopes have 12 bit native vertical resolution that would be one of may advantages in automotive application over 2000 series scopes, the only problem is to justify the price, especially if it is only a hobby. Third thing, you can change number of stored frames to more than default 32. I think maximum is 1000 or maybe 10 000. I have it set to 200. Then you can have lots and lots of frames to go back in history and can zoom in in any of them. All signals in millisecond/div and second/div timebase are slow. That includes ignition, injectors , digital cam and crank sensors. Everything that physically moves in engine is "slow" for oscilloscope. 10 000 rpm is a fast engine speed, but is only 166 Hz, or 0,166 KHz that is nothing for oscilloscopes. All mechanical events in engine are slow for oscilloscope And therefore can be captured zoomable using this method. The only automotive "Fast" signals are digital data traveling in datalines, that would be in nanoseconds/div and microsecond/div range. Here you will have to use Block mode. In this mode you can capture fast signals, but one capture( or waveform screen) is limited to built in memory(2204A has only 8 000 sample memory). Only in block mode you can utilize advertised 100MS/s and capture signals that are in MHz range, and this waveform can not be zoom-friendly. In comparison "Automotive" picoscope has 250 million sample memory, and "Block mode" waveforms can also be zoomed in. It is very easy to make your own "pulse sensor" that works the same as picoscopes first look. All you need is piezoelectric speaker (reused from toy or bought for 10cents new) , put in some pipe. It can be used to measure tail pipe pulses for misfires. And also works for pulses in vacuum, if connected in place of brake booster. Another toy is pressure transducer, that can be used for in cylinder pressure test on a running engine, remove one spark plug put in the sensor. Then graph what how the pressure changes. Pressure transducers can also be used to measure and graph liquid pressure changes like gasoline pressure or oil pressure if you would replace oil pressure sensor with this transducer. I bought a pressure transducer for in-cylinder pressure test a year ago but didn't have time to make adapter for spark plug (old spark plug might be used for that), it also needs 5V reference voltage power source - USB power bank can be used for power. It was cheap (about 10 to 15 usd), but not as plug an play, therefore sits in my toolbox.

Gatis Zvejnieks Wow, thanks for taking the time to share this! Yes I have had a play with capturing waveforms on a longer time base and zooming. I can see the difference when changing the sample rate. That is a good tip, useful for checking slack timing changes where we want to compare time bases at different points. I’ve not heard of this block mode, will check it out. I love the pressure diagnostics, it gives a great picture of inside the engine. Will also have to get myself a piezo pick up and try measuring the exhaust pulses. I see people using 2, one in exhaust and one in intake for a full picture. Some great ideas for me here, will have a play put something together. It really is a great tool this 2204A, for the money! Thanks

I use the same clamp for relative compression, i put it so that the current flows through the front face with the buttons, and out of the back. That is the conventional current flow. Would have been easy for us if they had put an arrow on it. Thanks for the demo

Another consideration is CC-650 has a 400 Hz bandwidth limitation vs 20 KHz for CC-65. The drawback on the CC-65 is it's small throat. And, I find it "noisy" Yet, both clamps are hard to beat for price/performance which explains their popularity and I own both. Cheers:)

the GADGETS playlist Ah ok, useful to know. Yeah they are great value. I am looking at the Pico TA234 - get around those big cables and probably a better quality output. I use the Pico clamps regularly at work and they are great, apart from the small throat on the small clamp like to mention 👍

The Hantek software I downloaded about 2 years ago, works okay but no where as good as the Pico SW. I also did the automotive hack for the Pico and seems to work. I’m running it all off a Dell PC running windows 10. I was thinking about getting the Hscope SW but I believe that is for Android device and don’t have one. Now that I have the Pico 2204a I feel that will be my go to scope. Just might get a laptop for more mobile use.

TheGibby3340 Yeah, just seeing how good this is for the lower current measurements; and the CC-65 won’t go round a battery cable (for current draw). It is clearly not suitable for low current measurements and the 100mA setting seems a bit of a gimmick. What I will probably end up getting is the 30A TA234 from PicoScope. 👍

Most modern laptops will suffice. Of course the higher the specs the better it will perform for taking long captures. I’d say atleast 4gb RAM. 8 is better. Any modern processor. An a proper hard drive (not these small laptops designed for web browsing and basic office programs). This here is an old high spec Dell.

Wouldn’t the filters help clean up these signals? Same with pulling the current readings from a jumper wire out of the fuse box if possible.
@MechanicMindset
@MechanicMindset 4 жыл бұрын
Bleebleblahble88 Yes they would, this scope doesn’t seem to have the filter function like the Pico Automotive (and others) do. Re. jumper cable, the ignition coils and injectors (12V) tend to have a common power supply i.e one fuse for multiple components, and ground switched at the ECU, so no where for the jumper cable. On other components with a dedicated fuse, for sure! Get that clamp out of the EMF for a cleaner signal 👍
