I have decided to close the membership program here on KZfaq and open one on Ko-fi instead. It is so much better than KZfaq! There are several advantages: I can send you messages and answer your questions privately; I can post several photos together; you can choose between one-time support or becoming a member and sending your support once a year and not once a month… And if you send me $10 then I get… $10! Chag Sameach! I am not jewish, but I love Israel and celebrate with a jewish friend here in Norway. Some years ago I bought a big chanukia at Mehane Yehuda in Jerusalem, 60 cm high. It is great. Had a chanukkaparty last monday and will gather friend for closing the feast coming monday. Eating sufganiot, latkes and pancaces with cheese and date-honey from Shomron. We also read from the books of Maccabees. Lovely.

I love the Jewish emphasis on family and celebrating as families. Too many of us have lost touch with that part of holidays. In fact, I think too many westerners have lost touch with a sense of sacredness that is key to most of these festivals. Thanks for a great video, and Hanukkah blessings to you and your family, Oren.

I believe, the fathers blessings about the wife and the children at the Shabat evening, IS a real blessing. This is missed in western, Christian families ( without wanting to offend somebody , there are surely a lot of very loving parents )

@@kathidori8504 I agree with you that the Jewish father's blessing over his family is so significant. You confirm my opinion that the secular West has lost touch with some very valuable aspects of life, especially that significant family meal.

In Israel it is lite just outside ones door or inside by the window if for whatever reason the former isn't possible. Outside of Israel it's mostly done inside by the window. On occasion I have seen it lite outside by the door in heavily Jewish areas of NYC, but that is rare.

It makes me feel I have been to Israel, when in fact visiting your country is a dream for me as of now.....

That's really interesting. It's good to know references like that because I think it brings people closer together when we can find similarities in our cultures. I had a Chanukah party for my kids years back, when we were living in an area with very few Jewish people. So my kids wanted to invite everyone from their class and the majority of the people who came were Indian and they explained that the Hindu festival of Diwali is very similar, whereas a few Christian people were quite rude about it and refused to bring their children! Thank you for your reference: very educational! ☺️🕎

It should be noted that the word "Hanukkah" literally means "Dedication". While the festival at different times has had other names....Festival of Lights etc, it is fundamentally an 8 day festival, carried out in the manner of the nearby festival of Sukkot, commissioned by Judas Maccabeus in the year 164 CE as an annual commemoration of the re-commencement of sacrifices following the cleansing of the Temple and in affect the ending of Seleucid Rule, though not control. This festival clearly had strong political implications, as suggested by the exclusion of the books of the Maccabees from the Jewish Bible and emphasis of the "celebration" of a miracle rather that the re-dedication of the temple ......one might wonder why John should choose to include such a political reference in his Gospel. Though it should also be noted that it is in John that we see reference to the observance of Jewish biblical festivals by Jesus though this is the only attendance of a non-biblical event......again interesting.
@michaelcraig9427

That is interesting. Given that I wonder why the Protestant reformers did not include the Book of Maccabees in the Protestant canon. Seems they excluded books that were not in the Jewish canon.

@@happydillpickle Some Christians believe Yeshua (Jesus, light of the Word) was implanted without a man into Mary who was of the line of David, during the Feast of Lights. From John 1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John (Yohhanan). 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came first to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known. And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ (Messiah the Anointed One).” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie, he will baptize in the Spirit of Holliness.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and Spirit of truth.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."
