Sinéad passed away today. She never got over the death of her son 17 months ago. Only 56 and she has died. RIP Sinéad Ireland 🇮🇪 is broken hearted 💔💔💔. What an amazing talented beautiful singer.

Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 17 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard….) was when she was thinking about her mum in that moment, who died in a car crash in 1985. Three weeks before that accident, Sinead wanted to forgive her Mum for all the abuse she gave her. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics in this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.

Sinead's son did die, but he was 17 and it was only last year (as far as I know) so nothing to do with this video. She has led a troubled and controversial life but her interpretation of this song was beautiful. Thanks for the reaction, Hap. 💕

Hello my friend - I am now 72 years old german Man and I know the song since... I don't know how long, very long in any case, and I'm not ashamed of the tears that come to my eyes because the song is so exquisitely emotional. No matter what the background of the lyrics is - written by "Prince", it was just unique and Sinèad performed the song sooo fantastically... Always a pleasure to listen to...

Prince heard this version and basically gave her the song, she explained why it was easy for her to cry, while the song clearly has nothing to do with her mother as it was written by Prince she had recently lost her mother. They had recently reconciled after years apart due to her mother's abusive nature toward her when she was young. She was remembering her mum and the funeral and used that to bring the tears. For more passion and her own songwriting I recommend "Troy" . A song about her childhood and her mum's abuse

6:41-6:44 I got chills, unintentional foreshadowing for what is now sadly a reality. This song will always live in my head rent free. It debuted on the very day my mother found out she was pregnant with me back in January 1990, my mum will always tell me this story throughout the years as she had a fondness for Sinead, her unapologetic soul and ability to profoundly convey pure emotion through her vocals to connect with the listeners soul. Furthermore, to take a song by Prince himself and completely transcend him to make it your own...that is a rare gift indeed.

Written by Prince and originally recorded by Suzannah Melvoin's (his then girlfriend) band The Family. Sinead O'Connor did an amazing job with it. Prince later recorded it himself with Rosie Gaines, one of his backup singers. My favorite version has always been the original by The Family because that's when i fell in love with it. Love your reaction to this haunting version.

It's originally written by Prince, his version is very different. While most artists he gave a song to kind of imitated his style, Sinead O'Connor made it her own. Prince didn't like it and never wrote a song for her afterwards.

Her mother died when she was a teenager. She was in her early 20s singing this song in 1990.. It was dedicated to her mother.

To be Honest when I first heard this song. I had been sleeping and I set straight up and say who is singing this song? It was so haunting and so emotional. I had never heard that type of voice before. And I'm an opera singer and a flute player. And I was just so taken by this haunting voice. It's sad to see her gone now. May she rest in peace. And I'm sorry that her son committed suicide a year before. I hope that they're both.

Yes... it was in reference to her very abusive mom who died when Sinead O'Connor was younger. This is why Sinead fought hard to put on blast Child Abusers..( Her dad also had part in her abuse) . RIP Sweet Angel 😥🙏🦋❤

We are still mourning our beautiful Daughter Sinéad in Ireland💔We miss you but your legacy will live on forever. Sinéad was a force of nature with unmatched talent, but she was also very fragile. She did so much for Ireland....I don't think she realised how many people she helped by providing them with a voice. Please react to her live acapella performance of 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' - a 17th-century Irish poem that she transformed with just her voice and a 'beat box' sample; She was keening for our Country & it is pure perfection. The media and music industry cruelly shunned her for speaking THE TRUTH about the catholic abuse of innocent Irish children, including herself & she was eventually proven CORRECT - now an acknowledged fact globally. But the damage was already done to her and her career. I hope they're proud of their relentless victim shaming of a 23 year old girl who was brave enough to speak out. Rest easy sweet Sinéad - I hope you're finally at peace with your beloved son, Shane💚

HAP. This is from about 1990. Her son was born in 2004. There is a version she sings of Danny Boy from 1993. It's a capella and it's the most beautiful rendition I've heard.

Prince physically abused Sinead. Sinead's mother psychologically abused her. She grew up in a divided Ireland. She exposed the child abuse of Catholic alter boys LIVE on Saturday Nigh Live Ripping up a picture of the Pope. She was shunned by the industry for speaking the truth. And still she overcame to be one of the greatest singers in our time. Sinead you will be missed and remembered forever. Respect. RIP

She may have dedicated this song to her son who committed suicide in 2017 his name was Shane. She never got over losing him, hence her suicide just a couple weeks ago. So sad, so sad. This woman was an amazing artist and stood up tried and true for what she believed in. Thought against the institution that was wrong, abusive. She had the balls to do it and did it. This was the worldwide number one hit in 1990. This was originally lyrically written by Prince, and some years later she recorded this. We lost a real artist here!!

She recorded this video very shortly after her mother passed. Her mother was an alcoholic and reportedly abusive to Sinead, who of course wanted her love more than anything in life, but never got it.

It is uncanny how you picked up on the death of her son, but that did not occur until just last year! Now she herself is in the midst of spirits and angels. She was mourning the death of her son Shane decades before both passed to the other side.
