People used to call them a studio band. I have no idea where that came from. Sure they said they were most comfortable in the studio, but listening to their live performances makes you really appreciate their talent. One of the reasons they said they didn`t want to tour so much was the complexity of their music. They had so many musicians touring with them to be able to recreate the full sound they had on recordings. They had two sets of drums, violins, two pianos, backup singers, etc. If you really want to hear those ladies singing harmonies, try Chiquitita from the same concert. It is magical.

Husband and wife? Um, no. Agnetha and Bjorn were divorced by the time of this concert and Benny and Frida had not yet began their marriage although they were living together. Once they got married finally, Benny began cheating on Frida 6 months later.

@@Bondsback2325 I imagine the OP means _The Stage_ generally during their careers, not specifically to this performance. They’re known for (originally at least) being two married couples who created amazing music, even though they split up part way through their ABBA careers. That in itself is highly unusual.

"Does Your Mother Know" is a killer sone. It has 5 "hooks" it has a Key change, it is played in an "odd" time signature and, let 's face it, some great ABBA music.

What a band and what a performance. Agnetha and Frida could fall in and out of harmonies effortlessly. Their live stuff is always fantastic. Yes only four of them but when they toured they took the session musicians out with them. Also needed backup singers and an extra guy on keyboards to reproduce the recording. And yeah your right the enjoyed making music and pleasing fans. Thanks for the reaction.

They also used two drummers like the Doobie Brothers did. The second drummer is up behind the timpanis and also functions as their percussionist. He is hard to see but if you look closely you can find him. Björn and Benny were adherents of Phi Spector's wall of sound.
@Bondsback2325

They also brought guitarists. Benny played keyboards and Bjorn could not play guitar or any musical instruments. He "guitar synced" i.e. pretended to play guitar. Neither of the guys could sing even average so they had to have back up singers to cover their errors and bad voices. When the girls would step in, it would sound good at that point obviously. The main reason that people didn't like ABBA although most people liked a number of their songs were the embarrassing guys. Bjorn is wearing something so skin tight, its scary and nauseating. The two guys never got over their 1965 haircuts and were always laughable the way they acted on stage and what they wore....very Euro. (especially Bjorn). They were truly embarrassing. The two girls on the other hand, sang beautifully and always looked great. That is why those two songs which closed the set were both horrible. Bjorn demanded that he get one song per album to sing even though the other 3 knew he couldn't sing. The two guys would go off to an island to write songs. Benny wrote the songs (music) and Bjorn and their manager Stig and even Agnetha in the studio would get the lyrics down. Agnethat is an accomplished songwriter and wrote a ton of great songs before ABBA. On ABBA's first album, Anna wrote Disillusion which is a better song than Bjorn ever wrote in his life. But the boys would go off on an island and pound out the songs to make sure the talent (the girls) couldn't participate any make any of the real money i.e. songwriting credits. The whole thing was F"ed up. Anna assumed that it was OK because she was married to Bjorn. Very naive. Bjorn started cheating on her with her best friend and then they divorced and Agnetha was screwed out of the possibility of any songwriting credits. Horrible. I dont remember Lennon and McCartney needing to write songs on an island, do you? What a joke.

Yes; heavy rock wasn't their norm, but the charts were full of it for a lot of their reign, which is perhaps why some people didn't like them (or pretended not to); these two songs showed that they could do heavy rock excellently if they wanted to, they just didn't want to most of the time!

Good evening to you and thank you very much for this special reaction from ABBA 10 days ago several ABBA fans asked you for this duo of live songs Today and the following days we will thank you You have given us a beautiful moment of enjoying the music with your joy analysis and enjoyment (I saw myself in the comments you showed at the beginning asking you for this double reaction) Everything you say is very true The control of the supporting musicians when the girls are around them The brilliant harmonies of the four (not just the two girls anymore) The energy and enjoyment that enhances their songs I add a context data that elevates what you say The recital is the closing of the North America/Europe Tour September/November 1979 At the beginning of that year the blonde singer Agnetha and the guitarist and singer Björn had already separated; However, their professionalism allowed them to share the love for their music and that energy put on stage Something about the two songs: "Does your mother know" with Björn added to Agnetha and Frida at the leads vocales, was the second single from their six album "Voulez Vous" (1979) pick #3 in UK "Hole in your soul" wasn't a single, it's a hidden gem in their five album "ABBA The Album" (1977) ABBA gave the best of itself in that mythical setting It had been almost two hours and 20 songs And they arrive at this epic moment with the four in front of their audience (after a memorable melodic and heavenly bridge of the singers Agnetha and Frida and their highest and highest notes) Then there will be the special numbers. They will return to close with the emotional "The way all friends do" followed by their greatest worldwide hit "Dancing Queen" And the final bonus will be the iconic "Waterloo", the song that gave them the triumph there in England in the remembered 1974 Eurovision Contest that put ABBA in the consideration of the music world Here is the link to this final trio of songs ("Waterloo" with image of the first minute, but the complete audio) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g8uCeLaLz9ecemQ.html Thank you again so much for giving us this gift for all ABBA fans My best wishes for you from Buenos Aires Argentina And we will see each other in other videos and react

Thanks for your great reaction! May I suggest one of my favorites "I Am´The City" unfortunately there is no video for this. "I Am the City" was recorded in May 1982, the 8th, originally for inclusion on what would have been ABBA's ninth studio album. However, these plans were soon abandoned,. As a result of this, "I Am the City" remained unreleased for eleven years until it was first commercially released on the 1993 compilation album More ABBA Gold: More ABBA Hits. Previously, the song had surfaced on bootleg recordings

"Does Your Mother Know" and "Hole in Your Soul" were the last songs before the Encores ("The Way Old Friends Do" (very anthemic song), "Dancing Queen" and "Waterloo") Agnetha (Blonde), Bjorn (the lyricist, guitarist and singer), Benny (the composer and keybordist) and Anni-Frid (Red). If you want raw live ABBA sound you can listen to the Milwaukee Concert, it is a tape recorded the quality is quite good if you consider it is a 1979 recording kzfaq.info/sun/PL4850B028664395A2 it is the complete concert and a great one. EXTRAordinary LIVE musicians! In the time they existed as a band they were kinda underrated. It wasn't hip to like ABBA, specially in the UK. Afterwards they split, they've become quite the phenomenon. still are. Musicals, films...Museum, etc etc. And some music professors have even stated that they (Bjorn and Benny) were better songwriters than the Beatles. Shrugs, haven't looked deeply into that, but I guess it's also a matter of opinion. Cause it's taste of music.

Does Your Mother Know dates from 79 and is from the ';Voulez-Vous' album while 'Hole In Your Soul' dates from 1977 and is from 'ABBA - The Album'. All ABBA's albums contain a vaiety of genres produced to perfect and the band are so much more than 'ABBA GOLD - GREATEST HITS' or the 'Mamma Mia' movies. Loads of investigation needed with this group of talented Swedes who made it when the UK and USA dominated so many charts.

Hi! ABBA has become extremely popular to review among the young and almost young crowd. I like to read them and to listen to the new audience if they have something to say about the music and the musicans. I think you do! Interesting to watch. What can I say about ABBA? They have meant enormously to me from young age and they still are. They had the X factor. Actually many X factors. If you listen to ABBA now and their best work, it has a combination of very high quality in everything, the song writing, the arrangements, the voices. Their songs are extremely diverse, and still there is no doubt that it's ABBA you're hearing. There is something magic about their recordings. A sparkle. The Wembley performances definitely have sparkle. Energy. Even when the energy was somewhat gone on their last album The Visitors, they still managed to create the most haunting and beautiful songs and melodies. Even though they were super popular they never looked upon themselves as stars or superstars. The girls were down to earth. Sympathetic beautiful people, still giving so much joy to many people after all this time. ABBA are our sisters and brothers, God bless them!

ABBA is timeless. Back when they were actually recording and performing live they did not get a lot of respect from the so called cool people although they did get more respect than KISS and look how they are viewed today. ABBA is even bigger than that today. They have had two hits albums released after the group broke up that have sold better than most of their original albums and two movies and a Broadway musical based off of the first movie ( Mama Mia ) done with their music. They were a very talented group with the two guys writing the music and the ladies did most of the singing lead wise with the blond girl being featured most of the time. This song, Does Your Mother Know, is one of the very few that one of the guys sings lead. Their song catalogue consists of 117 songs total, but some of those are duplicates they did in Spanish or Swedish, they had 20 songs over their career make the Billboard Hot 100. The two hits albums were ABBA Gold and ABBA Gold 2 with roughly 40 songs between them that all made gold on sales as singles although I do not know which country's standards for a gold record were used to determine that. Suffice it to say they have a lot of great songs.

What you have to remember is that this was _not_ ABBA's normal style - but during most of the time they were producing their hits, the charts (at least in UK) _were_ full of heavy rock; ABBA's normal style of nice catchy tunes were seen as a bit - well, lots of people wouldn't _admit_ they liked ABBA, though they probably did really (sales prove it after all!). This was just ABBA showing they could do heavy rock if they wanted to - and of course did a wonderful job of it. Also, I love the fact that, although it's heavy rock approaching metal, the lyrics are actually very moral, if you think about it! They're addressed to a teenage - if that - fan who is coming on to the performer, and he turns her down gently (note the title line). You said you didn't know their names, or how many there were though you thought only four - well, some of the accompanying instrumentalists actually contribute a lot, and have been credited somewhat in recent years, but there are only four main members - Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Annafrid - or A B B A for short! (Bjorn and Benny wrote nearly all the songs.) I like the pun in the title of the second song - "... you've got to feel it way down in your shoes: it's gotta be rock and roll, to fill the hole in your SOUL/SOLE"! And although it's basically a heavy rock number, it has the pauses for the beautiful harmonies.

Just rewatched this and your face throughout is so smiley. That's what A (Agnetha), B (Bjorn) B (Benny) A (Anni-Frid / Frida) do. Your right that their are four ABBA members, now all in their 70's but those musicians played a huge part in the creation of the songs. None of the ABBA members actually wrote music so Bjorn & Benny would come up with an idea, a melody and take it to the studio where they would spend days if not weeks figuring out the song with their tight-knit musician friends. The guitarist who gets Agnetha & Frida wrapped around his legs is Lasse Wellander. He plays on a lot of the ABBA songs and is still performing. Due to the technical studio work it was often difficult to reproduce the music live and ABBA were never fans of live material. They'd been performing through the 60's and early 70's so touring with ABBA was never a huge priority but when they did, it was an almight performance. Its the effort ABBA and other acts from the 70's (Queen, ELO Etc) put in that made them supergroups. There was no internet back then to get your latest track played. It was promoted through TV appearances, touring and through the promo videos. Through their 10 years as an active group, ABBA's progression from 1972 to 1982 as artists is nothing short as miraculous for four people who wrote, arranged, recorded and produced all their own music when there first language wasn't even English. Probably the only non UK/USA band to ever achieve as much as they did. And coming up to date with talk of new music, the biggest test for the ABBAtars is can they really re-create a performance like this? If they can it would be magical but there's a huge legacy to live up to. As it would be if someone came up with a Freddie Mercury avatar. I'm not sure the original can truly be replaced by the synthetic.

I don't think I could play the guitar there.. with Agnetha and Frida so close.. I can't play the guitar. And that wouldn't help.

Agnetha (blonde woman) Benny (bearded piano man) Bjorn (guitarist) Anni-Frid (brunette woman) Agentha and Bjorn were a married couple, and so was Benny and Anni-Frid. The two couples eventually went through a divorce, and this period is often reflected in their later music, like the Winner Takes It All. Can I ask you try listening to ABBA's 'Angel Eyes', which I think is one of their most underrated songs.

so you are not commenting on the unusual theme of the song at all? ABBA were way ahead of their time with this song.

Actually they are not renowned for their disco hits They had one album that had just a couple disco hits on it and that's basically the extent of their disco foray they're more of a pop music group than Disco I don't really like when people consider them disco because when they did do songs that were disco it was considered experimenting for them, And it was not what they usually did so just wanted to get that out there and the album that they did that with was Voulez-Vous that came out in 1978
