this is beautiful!! how do you lock in the colours afterwards? did the print come off after washing?
@OLORS3 жыл бұрын
I used alum to lock the colors. But I didnt mention it in the video since i'm a beginner when it comes to dying. Many use this technique without locking the colors. The tests i did are stored in a window as an experiment. They have faded but not that much yet (and it's been a few months). Im planning to never wash these shirts. I view them more as a piece of art, that i can wear at special occasions. Maybe sew in some removable "armpit-pads", haha!

I saw in another video that you can soak it in a water and vinegar mixture to set the colors

Hi! What a gorgeous shirt, both the sewing and the print! I also tried Hapa Zome this past year for the first time, but I haven't seen anyone use tape- brilliant! Is it just masking tape, or what kind of tape is it?
@OLORS3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The technique is amazing, right?! Yes, just regular masking tape. Good luck!

Looks like "paper" tape that we use in the OR on patients with allergies.

I just learned about Hap Zome what a beautiful craft so Japanese in it’s simplicity. Do you suggest pure cotton cloth for best Color transfer?
@OLORS2 жыл бұрын
Isn’t amazing! I don’t think wool or synthetic fabric. So cotton och linen (which I’m using in the video) will work best. I don’t remember if I tried it on silk as well. I think that would work too, but maybe bleed a bit!

Do you use a mordant on fiber before you do the flowers. Alum
@OLORS Жыл бұрын
Yes, I did. But I dont consider it suuuper necessary. I store my shirt dark and have never washed it. I consider it a piece of art or like a bouquet of fresh flowers that's never ment to be kept forever. If that makes sense to you. :)

The print is unwashable. I suggest that you ventilate it and use protection pads under the arms.

Hi! I wanted to ask how you lock in the colors or wash it without the colors fading
@OLORS3 жыл бұрын
To make them last longer you can use alum beforehand (google it, I dont have the words for it in english, haha!) and when the you´ve finished the pounding you can steam the print. Ive stored my shirts dark and they look as good as new. But, I view the print as a piece of art, or as a flower bouque, meaning it will shine for as long as it will shine. :)

Andrea Dawn Do all these steps for the best results. 1. Make sure the fabric is a natural fiber (cotton/linen or wool/silk for example). 2. Scour the fabric in order to thoroughly clean it so nothing blocks the dye from entering the fibers (simmer gently for 1-2 hours in a pot with washing soda and Marseille soap or other neutral no whitener no enzyme no additives soap). Rinse out all the soap afterwards. 3. This is the most crucial step: Mordant the fabric (simmer or soak in a bath of mordant, which is the "fixative"). For plant fibers like cotton/linen, use aluminium acetate as a mordant and also dip it in a wheat bran bath afterwards, read online "how to mordant cotton with aluminum acetate". For protein fibers like silk/wool use alum (potassium aluminium sulphate) as a mordant, you can search "how to mordant silk and wool with alum". Alum doesn't stick to plant fibers as well as aluminum acetate does. 4. Do the printing. Iron can stain the fabric in this step so be careful with any tools. Peel off the flowers but don't wash yet. Let the printed fabric dry well ventilated and out of sunlight. If you let it hang and "cure" for a week the colors might set better. Some people also claim that ironing or steaming may help set the color but be careful with that as the heat may be damaging to some pigments. 5. Wash the fabric in cool water max 30°C with neutral detergent or soap, I use detergent meant for silk because it has the right properties. Any detergent with enzymes will treat your print as a stain and gobble it up. Let it dry out of sunlight to avoid unnecessary bleaching and then you can use it! And when you need to wash it just use that silk detergent and cool water.
