Thank you for pointing out how easy it is to become complacent and make mistakes, instead of playing it off as "I meant to do that." Your honesty is a big reason I never miss a video.
@TomsBigSpiders

Hi, Bobbi! Yeah, there was NO way I was letting that one slip by without addressing it. I didn't realize how close it was until I rewatched the video. That could have ended VERY badly, and it was 100% preventable. It was a good reminder to me to not screw around and a good message for folks new to the hobby. Thank you!

I think it’s great that you admit that you make a mistake there, really shows that everyone will make errors and forget things once in a while, even people with as much experience and expertise as you! Shows new hobbyists things they may not have considered because it would just be a thing more experienced keepers wouldn’t even mention cuz to them, it’s common knowledge. And it shows older keepers that they aren’t infallible, so don’t go attacking newer keepers over things you think are obvious. We all make mistakes! Own up to them and learn from it is all!

Of course! I made a huge error in that rehousing that could have led to that spider getting loose or dying. The fact that I mentioned before we started shooting that this one tended to be a bit crazy makes it worse. It was a good wake up call for me, and I wanted to make sure that folks realized that it was 100% luck that it ended well. I definitely make mistakes, and I will never shy away from putting them out there and chastising myself over them. Thank you!

Oh yes, I love H. formosus, so beautiful little spiders. And with D. pentaloris, they are both so colorful and famouse in the hobby. Love both, and both are hardy, so for beginners good. My "big" girl is 6 y now, but still skitish and fast. Your mistake in the video is something that happens, it's something that happens even after many years when rehouse a spider, I know it from my self 😅! Not so long ago, my psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus ended up on my shoulder, after bolting out of my catch cup, in the same way! 😉 They are spiders, not turtles, things like that happens, as long as you keep calm, everything is okay. I think the most important thing in this hobby is, learn to stay calm und never panik! Thanks for the video Tom! I wish you and your family a wonderful sunday and stay safe! Greetings Chris 🤘

Hello, Chis! They really are...both species. I was foolish to overlook the smaller species for quite some time. And, like you said, they can make great beginners. And I agree...the key is to keep calm. I was just lucky in this one, as that spider could have been up my arm or onto the floor. I wanted to point out that I got lazy and almost paid for it. Thanks again, bud!

I moved mine into a new container, and I included some of her old webbing to make it feel "safer". Turns out that was all the webbing she needed, and she hasn't webbed much else / I don't see her anymore. |D The crickets I put in are being eaten, so I'm just going to leave her be, but I haven't actually seen her in months. Thanks for another great video Tom and for sharing your process lumps and all - a good reminder for all of us! I have to say that I needed to back up the video to see where she went too, I was sure from the angle she was shooting out into the sweater box… what a funny girl ending up exactly where she wanted to be anyway, and stirring up a pile of trouble in the process (glad she’s safe! 🕷💕) I picked up one of these guys as a sling a few years ago but around the 2" rehousing it unfortunately became one of a half dozen T’s I lost to a batch of contaminated substrate… one day I will get another and your videos make it very tempting(!!) I hope you’re able to find a male / some slings without too much trouble for your future projects - absolutely wonderful spider! :)

I have about 40 spiders (all different species and a mix of OW and NW) and I think my pumpkin patch is my least favorite of them all. I mean it’s a beautiful female that was one of the first few spiders I got and I raised it up from a 1/4” sling, but I NEVER see it. Every few months I lift up the corner of the cork bark hide and make sure it’s still alive! It also never really eats! Great video though, as always!

Now I feel bad for leaving this comment after listening to your new podcast episode 😩. No hate at all. I just get upset that she doesn’t eat and never wants to come out! I have plenty of fossorial but I see signs of life from them at least, either legs poking out of the burrow, or the food disappears, so I don’t mind a spiders that never come out at all. Maybe others with a pumpkin patch have a better time with it! I love mine still so much, as I love all my spiders! And anyone looking to get one should absolutely give it a shot! And just to put it out there, my favorite genus is psalmopoeus and it’s the only genus that I made it a point to have every species I could get! Always enjoy your videos and podcast episodes. So I have a pumpkin patch and it's still a sling. It has molted probably three times with me. But it might be four. It was regrowing three legs that it lost at the Pet shop. I suspect it has molted because of that more than normal. Was probably instar 3 when I got it. They weren't able to tell me whether I had a Klien or Gros. Anyways... I was trying to figure out what I had. I started asking people online, and I had quite a few people telling me that it depended on whether or not I had a male, or female. That the Gros were the females, and the Klein the males of the exact same species. I'm getting the idea over all though that this is just very bad Intel. I was hoping you could cover this in your next video about the pumpkin patch?

Hello from the US! I would keep it moist and give it room to burrow while its younger. I usually feed slings twice a week because I'm trying to get them out of the sling stage more quickly, however, once a week will work. If it's really tiny, you can try leaving pre killed prey at the mouth of it's burrow. Cricket legs work as well for small slings. I hope that helps!

So does this mean that they’ve been formally described
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hi, Kevin! Honestly, I'm not sure. I think that folks suspected that they were just the H. formosus for a while, but no one had compared the two. We kept them labeled "sp. colombia" in the hobby for quite some time to be safe.

I’ve had mine for over a year and had only molted at most 3 times. Leg span no bigger then a nickel.
