I have my grandfather's 70 CB750. I brought it home while he was in early stages of Alzheimer's. I was fortunate that it was the last thing he remembered about me. So, for the next few years, our conversations were always about me getting the bike running. I finally got it going, in time to lead his funeral procession. I've put a few thousand miles on it and road it in my grandma's funeral as well. Money will come and go, memories are what we cherish the most. Cheers Richard.

Congrats Richard on being the new Care-Taker of the Fonz bike. I also grew up watching Happy Days as I am also that old. My Dad died of Alzheimers in 2017. Keep doing what you're doing for your Dad. As you said, there will be good "Happy" Days and bad days in your Dad's future. Hoping that the day you take the bike to see your Dad will be truly a "Happy Days".

This post brought tears to my eyes on a couple of different levels. First the love you expressed for your father, and the hope that this bike might bring a connection again, even if momentarily. Second, how my father’s 39 Ford pickup is still in the family and undergoing restomodding right now. All the memories that his truck brings back of my father and brothers contributed to the tears. Thanks for posting.

He passed away 2 years ago for pancreatic cancer. People that attend the wake that I never meet that he went to high school with. Were telling me story's how he was the coolest kid in school. One old timer told me. You father was so cool he had a bike leather jacket even a switch blade. Thanks for the video it's terrific. Take care of that bike. I know you will.

Thank you for this video. In 2001, my father was Suffering with COPD. He was on Oxygen 24/7. He raced an OSSA Stilleto in the California Desert when we were kids. My brother restored that Stilleto and rode it over to our parents house. Mom heard it from a block away. Dad removed his oxygen and climbed on that bike and ripped down the street and back. He looked 10 years younger with a smile and spirit I had not seen in real long time. It is something worth so much more than money! Bless your Dad.

My heart goes out to you. With what you are going through. My dad passed away in 2017 of Alzheimer’s he lived with it for about 8 years and you are so right everything you said about how their mind operates. I can remember that he loved Johnny Cash. And when I played it for him. he could still remember the words.but if I asked him who I was he couldn’t tell me. I just think it’s a great idea of the Fonzie motorcycle to remember him and you in the past

This is a great, iconic bike and Fonzie rode it from season two through eight but the original was a '47 knucklehead used the first season.
@Theexplorographer
@Theexplorographer 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's not the bike he rode on the show. This was likely a backup or promotional prop. The bike he rode on the show had no gas tank rack, 2 tall boy mirrors, a larger back tire, taller 12" handlebars. Just search YT for "Happy Days Fonzie Motorcycle" and watch all the clips. Not the bike. I am glad it means something to RRR and his dad and that totally makes it all worth it whether it's the actual bike or not.

After further research I was able to find it on 2 episodes. Like I said, most likely a back up bike as the main bike was the one I outlined above. Still damn cool!

I loved this episode for several reasons. I too used to watch Happy Days over and over but I wished I had a dude as cool as Fonzi as a dad or big brother. His character was so cool and tough but he was a softy and had great character. One of my favorite uncles suffered with Alzheimer’s as well and it’s such an awful disease. I appreciate your insight and advice on how to deal with it. Seeing this side of your life reminds us just how good of a human you are. God bless you and your pops!

A little league baseball coach for 60 years that taught me everything I know about the game and life. Now to be around him and he doesn't even recognize me anymore😢 I kills me inside. I have the honor of owning his 94 ford f150 he bought brand new that was in an accident. Im currently in the slow process of making it driveable again because its the same truck he would take me to baseball games in. Im in hopes of having it finished before it's to late so I can take him for one last ride in it along with my son. 😢thanks Richard for making this grown man cry much love to your father & I hope he enjoys the suprise🤟

Great video. My Dad had dementia at the end of his life. I used to visit him weekly with his favourite drink, brandy. Just give him a small glass to enjoy and he would start talking about his youth. He ran away from home at 16 and joined a circus ( Ashton Circus ). He became a clown and travelled with them for 7 years. He couldn’t remember his wife or kids but he remembered the circus like it was yesterday. I tracked down the relatives of the original circus owner and they supplied me with hundreds of digital photos from the time he was in the circus. I set up the television in his room to scroll through the photos while he had his brandy. It was fantastic to hear him laugh and remember things he got up to in those 7 years. Taking that bike to your Dad will hopefully bring back memories for him and open up the dark spot he is in for a brief period.

This definitely got a little sand in my eye. My heart goes out to you. Such beautiful memories, sentiment, and attitude toward what life throws at you. As a quadriplegic father much of what I envisioned my life to be as an “active” dad is completely unattainable (hiking, backpacking, etc) but I’ve learned to change my expectation that I created on how life would go. And to truly enjoy the moments we have with our sons/fathers - in that moment. Bless you, man. And keep on with that attitude - inspiring.

Good tribute to your Dad Richard, I lost my Dad to cancer years ago it was hard and still bothers me after nearly 25 years. One of my fondest memories is when I was in grade school in 1967 I came home and there was a Ford Mustang in the driveway to me that was so cool. He taught me how to drive in that car. It never left the family until the big fire in Northern California a few years ago destroyed it in my nieces barn. It was a dream to buy it back and restore it. Thank you Richard for sharing the road goes both ways as your Dad is also lucky to have a good son as you.

Richard. Get under the table with them is sone if the beat advice I have ever heard when it comes to alzheimer's. 5.years after my wife and I got married, my grandmother had forgotten it. Late stage alzheimer's. Our solution? We did a vow renewal on her 86th birthday. Chose that day as a family tie in, as I was born the morning of my grandfather's 60th. We lost her a month later. But having her there, on one of her clear days, made it all the more special for us. To the point that you aren't the only one fighting back tears. That was 15 years ago, and I still remember being in that little church, and seeing her sitting there with my dad and step mom. Still remember her smile, and will always treasure that memory. Thank you for sharing yours, of your father with us. MLLH&R. Prayers for you and your family through this trial, but here's something I have learned in my 46 years, the last 15 as an amputee. He will never give you more to carry than He knows you can bear. Be there for Dad, and make memories with him. You and your sister have got this.

This reminds me of one of my favorite episodes where Fonz loses his sight and gets depressed. To help him overcome his depression, Richie dismantles Fonz's bike and challenges him to put it back together blind like the Fonz always boasted he could. In the end, Fonz regains his confidence and his sight. Your story about your dad and how you help him with Alzheimer's reminded me of that episode.

Richard, I think this is one of your best, even your finest moment. I lost my mother a few years ago with dementia (as we call it in UK) and you made me think of her and all the good times we had. I hoping you dad is getting better, please, always enjoy your time with him. Thank you mate.

Absolutely beautiful story. Hope all sons and daughters have a story like that. I know I do and it shaped the way I transformed from a kid into a man. My Dad was my hero.

Great video! My dad passed from Alzheimer’s back in 2013. He loved motorcycles and actually raced flat track back in the 60’s and 70’s. The Fonzie bike reminds me of the old flat track bikes he used to race.

Very touching story about your father and the issues your going thru. it's hard watching someone you love and looked up to fade out of reality and loose touch with all they knew. You are a good son keep doing what you have to do and prayers for you all.

Richard, my Dad passed away last New Year's Eve, he was almost 91. He had dementia, we were best friends before, but the disease made a mess out of that. I feel your pain over your Dad's situation, I hope your showing Fonzi's bike to him sparks a memory you can share together. When the time comes, he WILL remember all of the good times you had together. Best Wishes to you both.

Such an awesome story of your dad!! I’ve heard you tell it before but each time is just as cool as the last. My first bike was a Kawasaki LTD 440.. Alzheimer’s is horrible for sure. I watched my grandmother go through it.. many prayers for you, your family and all the others dealing with it. Stay blessed!!
