+SuperSmashMaster43 It's so cheap to develop a good story...Some of the greatest films ever made were produced on shoestring budgets...The problem with Transformers is that they just straight up said fuck the story and let's make this shit look as good visually as possible...With brilliant aesthetics. And I actually enjoy the Transformer films what they are...But they haven't had a good story since first film in 07.

This movie is seriously way funnier than it deserves to be. I wanted to hate this so much, but I was laughing too much to get mad at it. This is basically a dark comedy instead of a horror movie.

Hakkem Johnson, I agree 100%. People want an 80s horror craze that we won't get, but horror is definitely making a comeback in some way. We can't get hardcore horror film one after another, so movies like this are the fillers, then we get Jigsaw this month. And Blumhouse is putting out Halloween next year, so there's a lot to look forward to as opposed to all the shitty horror films we got earlier and for the last few years.

I'd give it a matinee too, but if Jessica Rothe wasn't in the movie, it probably would have been a rental because she is easily the most enjoyable part of the movie.

The name of New Orleans's baseball team is the BABY CAKES. Not saying it isn't stupid. Just saying it happens. Anyway I am honestly surprised how positive people are about this movie. The trailers were garbage and it's shot at my alma mater which made it hurt worse

I am really glad you reviewed this. Besides enjoying ALL OF YOUR REVIEWS, I really wanted to see this movie when i saw the trailer. I've been a fan of the Blumhouse model, and this Groundhogs Day meets I Know What You Did Last Summer theme seemed appealing. I was afraid this may be too small of a film to get reviewed, so I am happy you did it, and that you enjoyed it. Its Friday the 13th tonight. I am going to go see this movie to celebrate.

I actually saw the trailer on a KZfaq video preroll and it started like a college comedy flick before it introduced the dying and stuff *way* after the skip option was there. I wanted to see it and from that I expected it to be a comedy because it kind of gradually revealed it was a horror movie. I expected a horror comedy or thriller with some detective type stuff in there. I don't seem to get many trailers in ads and would have usually skipped it if because it looked like a hot girl sleeping with nerd comedy scene but I'm glad I didn't skip. A very cool trailer in that context :)

I actually saw the longer trailer for this movie where it shows her relationship with the guy before all the 30 second "loud noises and jump scares!!!!1!!1!!!!!" ads started playing all over KZfaq, so I knew there was a lot more to this movie than a dumb horror movie. I'm glad it's actually good!

I didn't notice before, and besides me wanting to see this at a very low matinee, but I swear the writer Scott Lobdell was comic book writer for Marvel Comics in the 90s and I think it was in one of the X-Men books, drawn by Jim Lee. I believe it was a stand alone series after Uncanny X-Men for a while. Retreading here btw.

I haven't seen this yet, but I wholeheartedly agree with Martin in his assessment of many horror movies that replace good storytelling for gore. That's why I generally I hate horror movies. I hate being scared but am willing to deal with it if there's real character development. Movies like IT did so well with that and I hope there are more films like that in the future.

I agree with Martin, I thought it could be funny and was surprised when they went that way. It is taking a risk and usually those chances aren't taken. I'm glad they did in this movie because it made it a lot more enjoyable than just another slasher/horror movie.

I did find Happy Death Day a fun popcorn movie. It knows it is a comedy and really goes for it. However if you want more blood and gore with your comedy, there is a movie currently on Netflix: The Babysitter. It starts out slow (no real gore until 29:00 into movie), is directed by McG, but this movie is bats**t crazy. Be sure to stay for the (beginning of) closing credits for a retro moment.

I can like scares, but I fuckin hate gore like on a deep visceral level it actually makes me mad that so many horror movies rely on gore. I can't fuckin watch them I'll get panic attacks. But this, that mask is actually one of the scariest things I've ever seen, just its soulless smile, lack of eyebrows, and just bulbous size, I dunno it makes my skin crawl. Hearing that it's really not a gorey movie sells me on it. From what you're saying, I'll get the scares without the bullshit.

Happy Death Day is 5 years old! I remember seeing it at my local movieplex A clever combination of slasher movies meets time travel by Christopher Landon laying out all the typical horror cliches and turning them on themselves subverting expectation Low budget but it redefined the genres Jessica Rothe's performance makes it work; she's unlikeable at the start but more sympathetic as the film goes on seeing why she doesn't celebrate her birthday She also defies final girl stereotypes And if everything else isn't 100% next to some of the plot holes and gaps in logic and not fully taking advantage of its ideas It's true too by living the same day over and over again you start to see who you really are and have to change They never do explain why the loop happened in the first place but the director did touch upon in the sequel He's also open to making part 3 possibly a crossover with Freaky This movie is clever enough to feel original, and bold enough to know exactly where its limits are There’s plenty of emotional complexity, particularly in its character work thankfully and wry humor
