Happy growling from a greyhound

This is Tony my beautiful greyhound in 2009. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 10 and I miss him terribly. Tony did something that I have never seen any dog do. He growled when he was happy. If you petted him the right way, he growled like a purring cat. You will see this about one minute into the video. He also does a tiny bit of his happy butt dance at the end but it might be hard to see in this video. I miss you boy.

My boy (who has just been adopted a few days ago) did this to me this morning, along with what they call ‘snapping’ or ‘clicking’ and at first I thought it was aggressive but then I read about it and it’s actually a completely affectionate. Bit scary if you’re like me and never had a greyhound as a pet, but now I know and understand him a bit more ❤️

No it is growling. Only cats purr. All dogs growl and push theirselves against you when you scratch them at right spot, speed and push just right :D That's how they say "I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE what you are doing right now", some are just more noisy growlers than others ^^ It's important to notice the body language though, because if they growl and try to avoid you, it usually means they want to be left alone or they don't like it at all.

my grandma's duck tolling retriever goes completely crazy if anyone gives him a rough scratching anywhere, he starts doing a very low toller screech and flips around almost as if he's having a seizure and jumps up just out of your reach and starts barking because they stopped petting him xD It's adorable! he also steals blankets, pillows and comforterers to cuddle with them, halfchewing and "happywhines" lmao I think he's the weirdest but cutest dog ever xD

Greyhounds are cats in dog suits. Honestly. They *can* "purr" and do it for ages, especially when you gently rub their ears and just behind them. They don't even pause for breath! We're on our 8th hound in over 30 years (not including the short term fosters we had) and they've all done that. They "squeak" (almost like a miaow, but more of an eeeuuuw when they want something, like to go out to the garden or tell you someone's not in the house, and they also "woofle". They _can_ bark, but mostly they're quiet. If you get a chatty one (like our current boy - he's the noisiest one we've ever had), they woofle when they're trying to tell you something (like: I want a treat!).

I'm glad I stumbled across this video. This isn't a behavior I was familiar with in other dogs I've known. After seeing this, it won't surprise or unnerve me if encounter it in the greyhound I'm hoping to get in the future.

Had a husky hound mix that would "gronk" "snurckle" and go "Urrnk urnk urnk urr " grunting growls when you hit "that spot" as she got scritches.

Now that I think back to my late teen years, there were times when I've rubbed a dog's chest just the right way and they would make little rumbling / growling noises but I never noticed until I watched this and then took a trip down memory lane

One laughing and one crying eye. The laughing for the joy that Tony experiences in these moments. The crying one for that he went over the rainbow bridge. We had a 12 year old galgo lady who looked so much like him that they could be siblings. Unfortunately our LANA left us too and we miss her. Our condolences for this loss, we understand this so well. This is so beautiful. My housemate's Greyhound (Santos) does this. Thank you for taking the time to record this gorgeous moment with Tony. It's helped me learn about our lad, and understand the difference between a happy, and a back off growl. Peace out Tony xo

Reminds me of my greyhound girl when we'd play with her rope. I'd pull on it & she'd growl like a hound guarding the gates of hell, her tail wagging the whole time. I'd pull harder and harder, she'd growl louder and louder, with that tail a blur of wagging.

Our whippet started to do this as he got older, especially when heir someone else scratched a spot that he was struggling to reach, we called them his happy grumbles 😂

Thanks for this vid! My dog just started doing this whenever my wife rubs her face and calls her "pretty girl"..it was freaking us out a bit. She sounds a lot like your dog here. This has put my mind at ease now...thanks! He was a beautiful GreyHound...I'll bet you STILL miss him!

Thank you back. I do still miss this lovely boy. As for Tony's growling, in particular, it's all in the body language. You can see the pure joy as he growls and grumbles and be assured that it's not an unhappy situation. Delighted to hear that you have a happy growler too. :-)

Growling usually has the dog exposing it's teeth, that looked and sound like the happy groan from a well placed scratch or rub.

I have a Blue Heeler / Border Collie mix who appears to be a happy growler - which is why I've been seeking out videos like yours. Thanks for posting it. Both the sound and the trigger are pretty similar with my dog. Initially I was unsure and thought maybe he had an unknown injury or some psychological issues. But the case for 'happy growling' now looks pretty strong.
