This is the WNBC News 4 New York account from March 25, 1990 of the catastrophic fire at the Happy Land Social Club on Southern Blvd. near Tremont Avenue in the Bronx that killed 87 people, one of the worst fire disasters in New York's history. The cause was an act of arson by a jilted lover out for revenge against his ex-girlfriend. Most of the dead died from asphyxiation after the flames sucked the oxygen out of the second floor of the building, which had no windows and no fire exit. The 15-minute account covers as many aspects of the fire and its aftermath as were known at the time. Mayor David Dinkins is seen visiting the scene and giving a press conference afterwards. The news anchors are Ralph Penza and Carol Jenkins, while the reporters covering the event include David Diaz at the scene of the fire interviewing eyewitnesses and relatives of the victims; John Miller at the 48th Precinct; Mary Civiello interviewing relatives of the victims at P.S. 67 near the site of the fire and covering the aftermath from the City Morgue; and Gabe Pressman at City Hall. No mention is made of the fact that the dead were mostly from a growing Honduran immigrant community in the neighborhood. I used to work down the block from the Happy Land so this disaster hit close to home for me. I am uploading this on the 24th anniversary of the fire, which took place on the 79th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. I've also uploaded the WABC Eyewitness News report from the same date.

Wilson Efrain pesantez was my stepfather at the time. He was with my mom Kathy. They loved each other very much. I was 4 years old but have a lot of memories of Wilson. Tons of photos. He and my mom were suppose to have gone out that night. My mom was already dressed waiting for him to pick her up after he came out of work but instead, a friend of his was going through a ruff time in his marriage and Wilson decided to go with his friend to the club to be there for his buddy and hear him out . That morning, mom was seeing the news about the happy land never imagining that Wilson was there. Until my dad called my mom ( since my dad lived a block away from the club) because he saw a car with her photo in it. The car was Wilson's. Everything went down hill from there. She, my dad and my aunt went to the school where they had the before and after photos of the victim. Before photo was of the victims covered in black smoke and the after photo was when the victims faces were cleaned as much as possible. Wilson was the very last photo she looked at. I remember calling him papi Wilson. He was a good man . Very kind hearted. Sweet and calm person. General. My heart goes out to all the families who lost someone on that day. I hope the person who caused this found Christ before he died a few years ago and asked for forgiveness.

This tragedy is not talked about as much as it should nowadays, and I remember when it happened how much it traumatized me. I kept thinking about the suffering of the victims and the outrage from the public that a domestic argument resulted in the deaths of so many people. Yesterday I searched the Happy Land fire and learned that Julio Gonzalez died in 2016. Today, the news of the fire in the Bronx, also in the Tremont section, and its 19 victims reopens the wound, revives the trauma, and covers the city in a veil of seemingly never ending grief.

I remember when this happened too. I lived about 20 minutes from the area and was scared to death to go by it. I finally went by about 10 years ago and it still had that feeling of death around it. David Dinkins was just entering his first term as mayor, just like Eric Adams is now. The majority of the victims were from the Honduras, Girafunas. There’s still a memorial across the street from the building. I think relatives still do a special memorial every year. Prayers over the Bronx 🙏🏾.

So here's what I learned from putting many accounts together- Julio's girlfriend (9 years his senior) accused him of making passes at her niece and broke things off, kicking him out of their cushy 2-bedroom apartment. He moved into the boarding house but was fired from his job at a lamp factory in Queens. He then got severely behind on his rent. He went to the social club, got drunk, tried to win her back, and the bouncers kicked him out. There were claims that she taunted him by saying she could get anyone she wanted. He vowed to return, found what I believe was an antifreeze container along the way, and went to the local Amoco station. The clerk was suspicious but another customer vouched for him. He paid $2 or so, darn near filled up the whole thing, poured it in the entrance way, lit two matches, tossed them, and pulled down the gates. He then sat across the street to watch the rescue efforts, took a bus home, and fell asleep in his gas-soaked clothes. They said he might've gotten a chance in court for insanity but when interviewed later that day he said "The Devil got to him" and admitted the crime flat out. The niece from the initial accusation that precipitated the end of his relationship actually died in the fire and left a child behind.

The amount of pain, I have seen my mother go through only because she busted her a** to bring her boys from Honduras whom as boys loved her unconditionally and were her only support system after they got to this country. My mom still suffers this to this day and I can only imagine the pain of the many more families. The thought that he can be "eligible" turned my mother stomach and drove her insane. It's sad that from the beginining he is not just thrown in there for good. I'm 22 and missed the chance to meet my brothers by 3 years. Unfortunately this is all the mediums I have to learn about them pictures and these news articles it saddens me but I know and am happy I have been able to patch up a tiny centimeter in my moms heart by having me and embracing them. May God Bless all those who have been affected!

My mother and I were just talking about the Happyland incident… She had just come from Honduras, working as a waitress, living in a room in the Bronx. Her brother, cousins and friends were all getting ready to head to Happyland. My mothers friends offered to wait for her while she got ready and she insisted they go on without her. Her cousin was recently deported so he couldn’t go, her brother was spending the night with some girl. Last minute once she was done getting ready, she said she looked at herself in the mirror and scolded herself for going out when she had an early shift the next day. She decided last minute to wash off her makeup and go to bed. Her entire shift at the restaurant the next day had the news running in the background about the incident. But she was so busy she really didn’t pay it any mind… It wasn’t till later that she received a call from her cousin that she heard about what happened. Her friends died in that fire… Specifically a man my mother was thinking about dating. He was in love with her, he never got the chance to tell her himself.

It's now June 13, 2016 at the time of typing this comment. An American-born terrorist had recently shot and killed 50 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The horrific tragedy of the Happy Land Club Fire bears striking similarities to the more recent slaughter, yet the fact that it occurred at all is being ignored by certain political interest groups and bureaucrats, all for the sake of pushing an agenda that would deny Americans their fundamental rights. I've made this comment to remind myself in the future, when politics and ideologies continue to clash, that the innocent lives lost to senseless tragedies of the past, like this one, should be honored by never being forgotten.

I was a rabid news junkie at the time this happened (I was 21 at the time) and still I never heard of this event were it not for my researching the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland. Strange that I do not remember this at all. I MUST have seen this story in some of the headlines or TV news, but just simply do not remember it. Tragic story.

In the late '90s, my co-host did a radio show focusing on the Happy Land tragedy. He mentioned the fact that the careless absentee landlord, Jay Weiss, was married to Kathleen Turner. I thought that lent the story a touch of sharp contrast between the ivory-tower lifestyle the landlord enjoyed and that of the everyday people who lost their lives while simply trying to find some happiness.
