National Buttermilk Biscuit Day is a holiday observed on May 14th that honors a classic bread product enjoyed with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They were developed from hardtack-an inexpensive and long-lasting bread product made from only flour and water.
Biscuits improved on this concept with the addition of lard, buttermilk, and baking powder, creating a fluffier and more palatable bread product. Right before the American Civil War, biscuits came to replace bread because they were easier to carry, more durable, and did a better job of sopping up gravy. They have been an American food choice ever since and now have their own holiday.
