The new cathedral bell tower was erected in 1564 on the advice of Giorgio Vasari, replacing the old tower of the main church in Cortona, Italy. Bells were lowered from the old, crumbling Romanesque tower, of which only the one cast in 1536 is preserved today. In the following centuries, the eight windows of the belfry were filled with eight bells, cast whenever one of the old ones cracked.
The eight bells are from eight different years, starting with the oldest from 1536 to the most recent from 2011.
- First bell cast in 1896 (weight 1085 kg, musical note E flat)
- Second bell cast in 1734 (weight 634 kg, musical note G flat)
- Third bell cast in 1536 (weight 678 kg, musical note A flat)
- Fourth bell cast in 1600 (weight 388 kg, musical note B flat)
- Fifth bell cast in 2011 (weight 221 kg, musical note C)
- Sixth bell cast in 1699 (weight 171 kg, musical note D flat)
- Seventh bell cast in 1619 (weight 115 kg, musical note F)
- Smallest bell cast in 1589 (weight 88 kg, musical note G flat)
The documentary was realised by tolling the bells individually in order to analyse the tonal structure. After the analysis, the eight bells are played together, starting in a descending scale from the highest to the lowest note. The ringing is exceptional, because you can hear the antiquity of as many as five bells out of eight, one of the most interesting concerts in the world.
The first church was built in the 6th century on the remains of a Roman temple and became the main church in the area in 1068. On 19 June 1325, Pope John XXII promoted the town to diocese, to punish his opponents in Arezzo, who were in favour of the emperor. The church was modified between 1481 and 1507 from the Romanesque style to become a Renaissance masterpiece, full of works of art of an exceptional level. In 1986, the church became a co-cathedral, united to the dioceses of Arezzo and Sansepolcro.
