This song brought tears to my eyes. Merle Haggard's family was from Oklahoma just like mine and he was raised in California's San Joaquin Valley (Bakersfield). Same for me - grew up near Modesto. My folks loved his music and it was often playing in our house. My Dad especially liked "If We Make it Through December" and was always singing it. Bittersweet memories - my parents are gone now.

I worked for the postal service for 35 years. This was always my December theme song the entire time I worked there. It is still my favorite December song.

I love all the classic Merle but like this song, he had other hits that were definitely hits at the time but it's gotten to where only fans really know them and appreciate them, but these are two more of them that I bet you guys would love. When I was growing up, my dad was laid off from his factory job for several years in the early 80s. Each year, my mom would sit my sister and I down and explain that Christmas wasn't going to be as great as we might like it because Daddy wasn't working. But every year we woke to a Christmas tree full of presents! As an adult I see how Ma did it - wrapping a shirt and pants and socks and slippers and robe and pajamas in different boxes so that the space under the tree was full. Looking back, I realize that my sister and I might have had one or two toys, but we had a lot of gifts! My parents worked so hard to give us the perception of a plentiful Christmas! We were blessed. And this song reminds me of those lean years.

Love me some Merle, thanks for all your entertaining listens guys! I don’t think you’ve ever checked out the great Guy Clark, and I would highly recommend him-one of the best singer songwriters out of Texas, known as the craftsman for his songwriting. Saw him live at the old Palms Playhouse in Davis, California many times with good friends, miss those days. So many great tunes-I’d recommend, off the top of my head, Homegrown Tomatoes, Randall Knife, The Cape…really can’t go wrong. Best buddy of Townes Van Zandt and listed as one of Bob Dylan’s favorite peer songwriters in a recent list he made in an interview, you really gotta check him out. Peace, God bless you both!

I read once that when Johnny Cash recorded Folsom Prison Blues, Merle Haggard was in the audience as a prisoner, and that concert change his life. This my favorite Merle Haggard song.

Merle Haggard, the original "Okie from Muskogee" (check that song out by Merle). Country music legend Merle Haggard died on April 6, 2016, at his home in the San Joaquin Valley, California, after a brief battle with pneumonia, so he did make it through December.. and moved to California. He died on his 79th birthday. The beloved country star recorded more than three dozen No. 1 hits in his musical career, which spanned six decades from the 1960s into the 2010s. Haggard actually predicted he would die on his birthday, according to his son, Ben Haggard. RIP Merle.

This was my choice for December, not because it was a great world class song but because it was an iconic song for that era!! And, yes, it was like him, of and for the people!

My husband got his paycheck and pink slip about 2 weeks before Christmas in 1973. I swear this is true. What made it worse is he was a great bulldozer operator. My brother-law had started working there and he hated my husband. It was my sister's husband. He was a good friend of the mine operator. We moved in with my parents for awhile. It wasn't the end of the world. I'm sure you know that Merle was from California.

Merle Haggard actually did time in prison and his humility comes through in his music. Listen to "Pancho and Lefty" which is a duet with Willie Nelson. Another great one by Haggard is "Red Bandana". Happy New Year!

History lesson for younger folks... It's a good thing we had great music and movies in the '70s, 'cause a lot of other things were awful. A series of economic recessions, high inflation, unemployment, crime rates, divorce rates, etc. This song resonated deep then...
