The last three years were more active than usual, with an eruption every year - but all in the same area that's not near any settlements. There has - so far - not been an eruption in Grindavík, the town has been evacuated as a precaution. There has, however, been quite some damage due to earthquakes and land lifting/sinking due to underground lava movements. For the town, it's the worst case scenario, because why bother rebuilding if it is still not clear if and when the lava pressure releases. If an eruption happened, they could rebuild and get on with their lives - now that town has to wait and worry when it'll happen - this year still? Next one? Fivd years?
