Great review. I especially loved your telling of the history regarding arcade shooters. At 6:22 you painted the picture that no one out there did anything like Point Blank in the arcade and everyone tried to compete with Time Crisis. I wonder, did you forget about Police Trainer? It came out in 1997 and (other than the lack of cartoony mascots) had virtually the same game play as Point Blank and, I think, was more popular.

1 sentence summary of this game for those who aren't familiar with the game: It's the Wario Ware for light guns. The Point Blank is the number one game series i spent the most money on in the arcades (closely followed by House of the Dead and Virtua Cop, that's why i freaking LOVED my Sega Saturn. Had the Japanese version so i could also play the best fighting game of all time, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter and the other Vs. games)

I remember playing Point Blank 1 and 2 on Sony PlayStation 1 when I was a kid but I never played the third one before. Point Blank is so much fun and enjoyable. I always love that shooting game. I wonder if Bandai Namco should make a compilation game of Point Blank series including the latest one for the Sony PS4/PS5, Microsoft Xbox One/Series X/S or Nintendo Switch. Point Blank is one of my favourite PS1 games and it is one of my favourite Namco games as well. It's probably one of the best Namco games/franchises of all time. Anyway greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪

The first time I saw the original game was in the arcades when on holiday as a child. My memory is kinda blurry, but I do remember being the only one in my family who was able to beat a certain game while they watched in awe as to how I did it. Oh, and I got my GunCon for 49p at Gamestation, lucky me! Shame I don't have the correct TV to use it though.

It maybe the montior shape as your typical tube tv had a convext shaped screen versus the typical flat screens of LCDs, meaning the Guncom is only used to making accurate shots on a curved surface. Then again, I never played the Point Blank series outside the arcades from the best of my knowledge so I cannot confirm this theory at all.

I actually don't know a whole lot about TVs. My LCD is actually pretty crappy, so old school games look great on it. You can buy rear-projection flat screens, Lance at RWtv has one, and I'm pretty sure you can use those with light gun games. I'm not an expert on the subject though.

I've never played a light gun game on a console before, so knowing this video was coming up, I went to my nearest video game store and bought Time Crisis 2 just for the hell of it. I have no GunCon, or any other type of light gun, so I've been playing it with my controller, gonna be on the look out for these :D Great vid. BTW the way u made Point Blank seem so fricking hectic, it almost looks like it would DESTROY the ds screen from all the tapping....as I assume that's the only way u can shoot
@Hezzu2000

Actually the reason for "tube" or CRT display is that LCD displays have lag and that lag causes the light guns detection system to not work.

Ghoul Panic is worth hunting down .. Basically the same premise, but in 3D instead of 2d sprites, with added boss fights and 3D stages mixed in with the arcade modes. Also a lot more bonus/remix features than the PB games.. Quite a good game if you can find it, (Or for Americans, import it)

Hello Derek, I hope you can help me out since you mentioned Ghoul Panic. I'd really like to get those pal games, but I'm not sure if the Guncon is going to work properly with pal games on an NTSC TV. Have you tried? I have tried with an unpatched iso of Virtua Cop Elite Edition (pal) on PS2 and calibration is quite good, but maybe I should buy the Japanese games and sacrifice language for gun accuracy. What would you recommend?
