I know, whenever people talk about consoles, like Dreamcast or whatever, that they wish would’ve survived and continued on in an alternate history, I think of PSP, and this game (alongside being able to play some of the great PS1 games on it, like FFVII, VIII, etc, which looked amazing on that screen) was a big part of that. I used to sit on the couch while my family was at the table eating just playing away at Crisis Core, lol. All of that seems so far away now; Crisis Core, my family actually sitting together, old school gaming. Ahhhh the nostalgiaaaaaa

I still own it on PSP and I finished it back in the day. I thought it did a great job of capturing the FF7 feeling and overall I liked it quite a bit even though I never did replay it. I loved seeing Zack and Sephiroth's story from this point of view and the ending had emotional punch.

I replayed the hell out of it. Still own it and my psp. Not liking the updated version (got the switch version) mostly because of the voice actors, character models (Zacks body looks weird and disproportionate), frame rate drop, or the dodge function (it was smoother in the original). Combat is fun (more exiting than the original). New animations and look to combat are great. Overall, I like it less than the original.

Serious question. How do people remember that game being so good on the psp?? Ff7 was my favorite game ever and I was super stoked for crisis core but from what I remember it was just walking through copy and paste hallways and then rolling dice to determine what attack or magic you would use. @@armorvil Like what someone else mentioned in someone's (fighting cowbowy's first 2 episodes) playthrough of the game I saw they re-worked the DMW so that you can store the limit breaks to use later when you get them (still need to get the roulette to match) and use them via Triangle...not sure if you can choose which one to use or if you can somehow scroll through the stocked limit breaks or not though as he used them all immediately in said video rather than stocked them up). This at least means we can use them more tactically/when they're more opportune than in the PSP version. Honestly from what I've seen the main reason to buy this version would be more so for the vast improvements to combat than anything else (most actions were taken off of the KH style command menu you scrolled through via L1/R1 and have their own button inputs now)...the graphics, performance, and all while being an 'update' also don't look that great tbh...especially with how the new voices don't sound as good as the OG game, character models have been changed for the worse imo (Zack's face looks fatter, Angeal's face looks like someone squashed it, and Tifa's clothing, if the leaked images weren't faked (haven't seen a playthrough that got to her yet so can't confirm yet), have been redesigned to look bland as fuck and the Ethic's team of course nerfed her chest so she's more or less flat now).

@@armorvil bro they changed the dmv, it's not as tedious as the old version. Play this one before giving an assessment, that's pretty unfair otherwise. Even though yes the game is obviously not perfect. The missions can be very tedious depending on your preference for exemple. The materia system might also not be for everyone. The level ups are not random in this version. There is an exp counter that is invisible but it's there, you can tell because you level up way faster when you fight overleved enemies who can one shot you.

I agree with a little grinding. I am one of the few who dont like octopath traveler. I think it could of been a good game. They took the grinding too far. It was to the point of just too much and tedious. So yes that's all it takes for me to say a game is bad. All rpgs have grinding I get it. I'm saying octopath was more grindy then all other rpgs. It was too much. No life level of grinding.

I think one of my favorite parts about Crisis Core itself is that, it's a much more personal story than most JRPG's. In most JRPG's especially Final Fantasy, it always escalates to you fighting GOD. FF7 comes CLOSE to that which is why i often like it more than some other FF games. This story doesn't even get to THAT point which makes it feel much more grounded (or as grounded as a jrpg story can be) and intimate. It's also a tragedy in it's own way when you go into it, knowing what's going to happen at the end which most JRPG's these days don't do.

A note on the missions there are 300 of them in total I don't think they're necessarily meant to be beaten on a first playthrough because there is a new game plus there are a lot of things you got to do in the world to trigger some of them and you can only do some of them during certain chapters of the game so if you see some new missions I would try to do them when they pop up there are one line of missions that you can only do during a single chapter don't remember which but I would recommend looking up a guide or if you have one from when you play before.

I love how the attacks now feel like it has some weight and impact, it makes it feel like you are actually landing heavy hitting sword attacks. I’ll admit that is a nice new touch. I so far I think my only flaw is… the new VAs, which I think it’s to coexist with 7remake; but damn if I don’t miss the old VAs (Shot out to… Rick Gomez, Steve Burton & George Newburn). 1:57-2:02 Actually, this bit right here, with the summons, is _not_ from the original cinematic. That was entirely redone. I would know because I have played through the original, and the summon animations are VERY noticeably different now.

Ohhh Johnny. I can't wait for you to release your final review. I can't wait for you to see and feel the whole story of it. For now you talked about the gameplay, and yes you're spot on , its addictive, but man...when the story hits you , its gonna be one of your fav games of all time i can feel it!

I recognize why every point was made in this review and I wouldn’t dissuade anyone from enjoying CC. Haven’t played this version, however, I did complete the PSP version, which I preordered. I found it to be fun, I liked the ending, but found the gameplay overall repetitive and the story weak compared to OG FF7. I had some interest in revisiting this as a budget title, but steam is showing $50-$70 for crisis core. I will not spend “AAA title new release” money on what was a $40 game when it actually was a new release.

*Spoilers* I remember how high I was leveled up by the end from doing all the side quests, and some part of me wanted to believe I could defy the inevitable and defeat all those Shinra troops. That moment wrecked me and having already played FF7 it made it even more impactful since I was already feeling nostalgia for FF7 at that point.

Crisis core is the definition of a fun game. The bad story and dialogue are easily forgotten when the gameplay loop is good.

I think the opening cinematic had a lot more impact back in 2008. It was really the first time we returned to that world after the original PS1 game. Now that we've played FF7Remake it's not as a big a deal but seeing Midgar in those high quality graphics back then was mind-blowing. As someone who loves the original Crisis Core to death, the only thing I dislike about this remaster is that they replaced all of the original voices. Zack is my favorite RPG character of all time and to me, his old VA was iconic. The new one just doesn't quite live up to that. The story is still fantastic though and I agree with everybody here that it will make you cry. That ending is one of the best ever. And like you Johnny, I also got super addicted to the missions as soon as I booted up this game on my PS5. Every time a new one unlocks, I keep telling myself "okay just one more, then I'll go on with the story!"

I loved playing Crisis Core on my Psp! I am a bit wary to get the new version though because the voice acting has changed so much and I loved the energy Rick Gomez brought to the character. I probably will pick it up though.

Totally agree with everything you said! This game is extremely FUN! The Final Fantasy fanfare is all there too, which definitely gives us that feeling of "home" just like you said. It's also part of why it's so darn addictive. Enjoy the game and thanks for the great review.

The game is fun to level your character, and for those of you that haven't played it, the story becomes addictive. Crisis Core is one of the best stories Square Enix has ever done. The plot twists are incredible. It's a game that made me love Sephiroth but also become terrified by him. Sephiroth is really scary in this game after a certain point. It's a hopeful game with a lot of sadness and excitement.

the funny thing is, it seems they couldn't just REDO the PSP cutscenes, sometimes making the in game cutscenes almost better in certain ways. BUT they did take the time to edit the buster sword in said PsP cutscenes in order to more closely align with the Bust sword from FF7 remake.

The PSP has a lot of great games, but I still consider this one of the best on the handheld system. I'm so happy they remastered it because it truly is a great game and I'm sure a LOT of people missed out. If you haven't played it and are into Final Fantasy VII, I highly recommend you check this one out. It's really really good.
