This is my review of the harbor freight auger that I bought to put up a fence. I think its worth the money. It does work well. Biggest con is that it is gas powered... 2 stroke gas.... meh. Biggest pro, it works well.... so there is that.
PLEASE READ THIS: if you will be digging holes on your property, check out miss utility. They will come mark your property where there are any utilities in the ground near where you are looking to do the work and or in the yard of your choice.
Link to the auger on harbor freights website here: www.harborfreight.com/Gas-Pow...

Pros - it works, runs well, digs a 31" hole through soil in about 2-3 minutes. Cons - if you live north of Columbus, Ohio, your frost line is going to be deeper than 31", so you'll have to use the post hole digger anyway. It saves a lot of time getting the holes started, so I'm good with that. Once everything was set up, I did 15 holes in rocky soil in about 45 minutes, not including rest time and recovering from being thrown around by the auger head time. Digging them down to 38-42 inches took another 10-15 minutes per hole, so the entire time is about half of what I would have done with just the posthole digger. Another con - this was the single most dangerous handheld power tool I have ever operated, and I've operated a lot of dangerous power tools. In rocky soil, the moment it hits a rock or a root, the auger head will spin very forcefully. If you grip it with your thumbs inside the handles, you are guaranteed to strain or sprain your thumbs at best when the head starts spinning, and I can easily see someone tearing a ligament in their thumb if they don't let go. Keep the thumbs on the outside of the handles. It's awkward, but it will save you injury. Also, keep your legs spread wide, outside of the diameter of the augur head. If you don't, the auger head will start spinning forcefully when you hit a rock and smash into your leg. I avoided this problem after the first time, but if your leg is in the wrong place when it starts spinning, i could easily see it breaking your shin. It is barely controllable, but a real time saver. Last, for time saving, if you mix concrete in the bucket, you can use the auger bit in the bucket as long as you keep a light throttle. You'll want to spray it off quickly so it doesn't get covered in hardened concrete, but as long as you aren't overfilling the bucket and are holding the pointy end off the bottom of the bucket, this will agitate the concrete mix enough to get it thoroughly mixed. This is overkill since it's pretty easy to mix small amounts of concrete on a piece of plywood or in a wheelbarrow, but there's a cool factor associated with doing it with the auger.

Hey thanks for the video! I recently bought one of these off eBay (mistake!) that looks very similar to yours and the manual that comes with it is total crap and seems to describe a different model of the auger / post hole digger than the one I received. The manual shows an oil filler port where you can put in 80-90 gear oil, however there is NO SUCH place to put oil into the gears on my machine. I've watched other videos like yours where it people only seem to be using a mix of gasoline and 2 stroke engine oil - On your auger, do you need to add 80-90 gear oil (didn't seem like it on the video)? Thank you!
@TRYtoHELPyou

Hi, thanks for the comment. As for gear oil, it was not needed with mine. It likely does have oil but it is done at the factory. If they say you must do it then you must. You will tear up the gears and bearings inside the gear casing otherwise. Good luck with it!

@@TRYtoHELPyou I noticed it on the label on your unit. The predator engines I have used on other equipment have always started up reliably. I like to use premium gas in my power tools and I add gas preservative when they are stored for the winter. I have seen the cordless auger on the Internet. It's twice as expensive. I'm not sure it would have as much torque and I wouldn't expect it to be practical beyond a few home repairs. There are also plug in augers which would be OK if your soil isn't rocky or full of roots.

When presenting cons - is it a con of the particular machine or a con of any auger? I don't think an electric motor would be as durable as a gas engine, but if only! Overall, good presentation - thank you.

E answer: both-ish. Electric motors Outlast internal combustion engines and have for over 100 years. A diesel locomotive can't handle the energy transfer other than to hook the diesel to a generator and have electric motors power the train. Electric motors are simple and effective. The only downside is bringing energy to the motor.

Ryobi has made a battery powered auger for overseas companies for a bit however you are in luck just the other day they announced the new HP line of tools for outdoors will feature a battery powered auger as well but with some upgrades. It will have anti kickback so you know that auger turning you around problem with roots will not happen. It also will feature a brushless motor and it has 30% more torque than its current gas powered rivals. It will dig a maximum hole depth of 31" according to the documentation. It will carry a price tag of 299.99 doll hairs partner. There is a wealth of outdoor 40v useful equipment for the battery platform as well so thinking about all this it may not be a bad idea if you are putting in a fence to score one of these. Only complaint I have is why not make an attachable extension rods for this thing? When I think of it if you are putting in taller posts for like a balcony post or something along that line possibly even a pole shed post you may be looking for deeper depths in ground. I can't say what is typical as I don't do it or know the building codes for each locality but I would imagine more depth could surely provide some benefit. Who knows maybe aftermarket will fill in the gap here and make some good cash. So it will function like this drill down 31 remove battery and pin and add extension drill down another good bit and if need be add another extension. You may need to stand on a gorilla platform or heck even the bed of your pickup to clear the dirt but it should be doable for the home user. The days of paying a million dollars to drill a hole should be gone for the most part a guy could even just build a 3ft wood platform with a hole in the center 48 x 48 x 36 position the hole where he wants to drill and bam you got about a 6ft hole just like that. There is nothing under the sun that couldn't be done to allow for at least a 6ft hole. Who knows maybe they alread make auger extensions that would work.

Saw a guy make a great auger out of a chainsaw... But then you're stuck with the same oil gas problem, bit I was thinking maybe if you geared it right, like high (?) at the bit gear, you could get away with a bigger electric. I have a 60v DeWalt chainsaw that would do it but I want to make a chainsaw mill out if it. I feel like I'll destroy Everything pointlessly though. But I think the electric chainsaw/auger is a viable mad-scientific plot. I'll bet you can find it with a basic KZfaq search.. It would be cool to make a sort of general chainsaw attachment gear; one could have different "bits" or blades but it would be (1) the auger attachment, (2) roto-tiller, (3) maybe a bandsaw mill (I really want a mill - anything that could get me solid wood at over 4inches thick and over 12 or 18 or more inches wide would pay for itself in an hour and a half, and I bet even and electric chainsaw meant for a 16" bar could run the much much thinner blade of a bandsaw through wood up to 20" or more easy. Anyway, I digress. As always. Um, yeah chainsaw auger mod

I don't think you'd be pleased if the auger were electric. It takea a lot of power to dig a hole which translates to battery not lasting very long before it would need to be charged. I could be wrong about that. BUT what I wanted to say is when you're buying gas powered tools always try to buy 4 stroke instead of 2 stroke tools. They are generally more powerful, the engines run at a lower RPM and sound like a tool instead of a 2 stroke that sounds more like a sewing machine. Also you add oil to the tool instead of the gas. (Think, your car) and they are just generally a better stronger tool. The only real downside is they're almost always more expensive, but WORTH spending the difference.

Dang man. Something about me with my cars being electric for the past 5+ years, it can be electric mad last just fine.I'm on car #20 and it's my third EV. Don't wanna go back. Anyway, the power band on this 2-stroke is well placed with the gearing, just smokey. Don't know where I could get a 4 stroke auger. Prolly could look. As for the battery powered ones now, they definitely last long enough to just swap and charge if needed. No need to burn gas anymore. Just local coal, natural gas or renewable (electric grid)

Reality check... Unless you live where there is lots of falling water, like some parts of CA, SOMETHING must be burned in order to make heat to make steam to drive the turbines to generate electricity. Wind-powered generators? Landfill nightmares. Don't EVEN get me started on battery operated tools!!!!!!!!!! Yes, pre-mix is messy both going in and coming out the exhaust pipe... but sometimes it's unavoidable... and in cases like this, I think you wouldn't want to deal with the size and weight of an electric motor that would do the same work as the tiny 2-stroke engine. (Some folks refer to then as "2-smoke" engines. ;-) Love it! Oh... and there are such things as "post hole diggers". Better than a shovel, but nowhere near as convenient as this little auger. Glad you didn't cut off a foot.

I'm on my 20th vehicle, the ones that were 0-15 mainly were bought broken and I fixed/resold, myself. Gas sucks. Being beholden to the all mighty big oil just to go places is silly to keep doing if you don't have to. Electric is the way to go for cars and tools. Soon to be trucks and tractor trailers too. While I appreciate taking a ride on a Honda cr250 and feeling the power band rip me up a dune, those days are few and past. A well build electric car or tool gives you the power instantly. No noise or crap to breathe

Great review, totally agree with u they need to make this electric, the smell of the exhaust is incredible, right in ur face, no matter which way the wind blows. :) UGH. It heats up really quick and after like 10 min or like 4-5 holes u need to give it a rest to cool off. For the price it is well worth it, sure beats manually digging a hole.

If it heats up, an electric would heat up too, and electric motors and cords etc. are less tolerant of the heat. That's just my expectation; I don't know if the corded electric ones last well or not. But I have a chainsaw too so I can just mix up fuel and run both with it.

the exhaust is crap, but I have beaten this thing up since the review and never had an overheat situation. wearing a mask with vapor filtration is key.

Forget corded and battery electric. Corded electric means we have a cord to deal with. Battery electric means less run time since batteries lose charges very quickly. Long live the two-stroke engine
@TRYtoHELPyou
@TRYtoHELPyou 4 жыл бұрын
Battery is better when all things are considered. I have two cars that run off a battery. If you don't drive 24/7 then battery is better. No time wasted at a gas station. No placing trash in the air directly. No need to import fuel. Even Ryobi has a 9ah 160Wh battery that lasts a long time. Bosch, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, they all have large long-run time batteries. Enjoy that 2-stroke tho. If gas was truly better our phones and cordless tools would all be gas powered. With that,the tool is still working well. I used it a few months back to dig several holes in a small space instead of shoveling and it operated as if it just came out of the box.

Electric augers would be stupid. 95% of places you're going to use an auger, you'd have to have a generator to run it, a gas or diesel powered generator. The gas powered head is just fine. Great video though.

2 stroke requires oil in the fuel because the fuel passes thru the crank casing, lubricates the moving parts, then gets sucked into the combustion chamber. They have a wicked power band as a result of blowing up every TDC.

Well dang.... Did you have the mix in the fuel correct? did you prime the carb until all air bubbles we're out of the fuel line? Mine is ok sill and was in the shed for over a year, unused. @@TRYtoHELPyou prime it many times, even after couple attempts.. used mixed gas and non mix gas.. the one that started, i just use gasoline mix with stabiliizer, didnt know they arw different from oil. second unit use gas mix with oil and it never starts. the string that you pull, dont extent out smoothly, it would get stuck somehow and cause me to lose grip.. like i said i got blisters pulling that thing, even have a friend tried it.. got so pissed i had to toss that thing around before i return it.. sorry if whoever got those units later...
