We take a close look at the Harbor Freight Central Machinery 2 horsepower 70 gallon dust collector. I'll let you know what I like, what I don't, and give you some airflow stats along the way.

In case you haven't already found out, the filter bag on top is Crap. It only filters down to 5 microns and puts tons of fine dust in your air. Very Bad. I removed the filter bag, inserted a plywood disk, with a 6" hole in the middle. I sealed under the edge of the plywood with some round foam backer rod, then ran some screws, around the edge of the plywood, down into the metal, underneath. Before installing the disk, I attached a piece of 6" round metal duct, in the hole and calked around it. I then ducted it outdoors, through a basement window, like a dryer, with a hood outside. No more fine dust indoors. P.S.: Run as little flexible tube as possible. It slows the airflow. If you set up central dust collection in your shop, use 6" round metal ducting or 6" PVC ( you don't have to glue, just screw), then wrap either one with modern ducting tape. You are right it is a very good system, for the money.

Does this dust collector come with any holds when you prop buy it? Also, do you know when you need to buy an extra hose or does it come with sun?

I bought the hose/accessory kit, I don't remember if it came with any, but I don't think so.

I just bought one of these and as it is spooling down it makes a metal scraping sound. I tried to listen in the video if yours does this but couldn't tell. Does yours make a noise as it slows down after cutting the power? Wondering if I should return mine...

I don't think so. It's seems like it idled to a stop pretty quietly if I remember right. I recently moved and it isn't hooked up right now, but I can try to get a cord to it and see.

I have a DeWalt plainer that I am having trouble with dust and debris with. Shop vac just doesn’t pull enough to keep the debris clear and it clogs often. Would buying this solve my problem? I need something that sucks and pulls the shavings though instead of clogging. Thank you.

It has decent suction and bigger hose so it should do a pretty decent job. The suction isn't super strong, but it's sufficient for most dust collection applications I've used it on. I don't have a benchtop planer so I can't actually speak to that, but it keeps up with everything I've hooked it to fairly well. Thanks for the comment!!

So did it do the CFM advertised or not? I'm a little confused as it said 1300 on the web site and your meter seemed to say 530, but you didn't mention that. So did it do what it said or didn't it? I'm not sure I understand.

Not at all. They never do. They do their testing in optimal conditions and stuff never (almost never) meets advertised specs.

Every manufacturer pulls a CFM number out of their ass. You can't really compare CFM across brand. You can (probably) only compare CFM within one brand as a relative number. Also, almost everyone uses the anemometer the lazy, but incorrect, way. You'll supposed to basically build a small wind tunnel; not just place the meter right by the suction. But no one wants to build all that for a simple test lol.

Can you hang that motor sideways on the wall without effecting the bearings or any thing else?

Yeah, shouldn't cause any problems.
