Fixin' MaTools episode 3. This is the third video in a series of fixing or modifying my tools to make them work or work better. On this episode I fix an oil leak. The bar and chain oil is leaking out of my Harbor Freight electric chainsaw, so I fix it.

Just found out there's a recall on these Harbor Freight Chicago Chainsaws. Model # 67255. Turns out the power switch might not cut off when you let go. Kinda an important feature on a chainsaw! Obviously more cheap junk passed off to the American consumer without regard to quality or safety. Call Harbor Freight's number at 1-800-444-3353 to find out what can be done. I'm waiting for them to open the phone lines this morning.

I have THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM with my green portland electric chainsaw = which is the same exact one as the red chicago one you have. THanks so much for being the guinea pig video maker to show the problem of which I know mine will have the same issue when I tear mine apart as well. keep up the good work!! I'll be sure to find a grommet to make that reservoir hold oil. I was hoping it wouldbe a hose as well. but my luck is never that great. thanks again!

I have the Portland Electric Saw and the same leak at the same place. A grommet is a great idea, thanks. I also had the grease issue outside the cage where the gear spins. I used some vaseline to add a little extra inside the cage. I ended up using a small pvc valve grommet and trimmed it up just a little. It fits upside down inside the hole. I had to make the hole slightly bigger with a cone drill bit to make it fit better. It has been holding really well so far with NO leaking whatsoever.

Had the same issue. Pulled mine apart, cleaned it up but instead of replacing the grommet I just slid it halfway out and used some loctite oil & gas resistant adhesive sealant, the pushed it back in. (the tank is built this way so you can replace that tiny sponge filter inside the feed nozzle, but I'll probably never replace that sponge) Let it set, then filled the tank and check it after 48 hours. Nothing seemed to be leaking, but out of an abundance of caution I'm not leaving oil in the tank from now on. Cleaning it was the worst part. I imagine, aside from that adhesive they used, there's more pieces to that oil pump that aren't oil resistant.

They may have changed the "brand" name to Portland, same tool, it looks like, same leaks reported. Great video. I was just going to drain & add oil when needed, but now I see it isn't all that complex to take apart and I'll do what I do with many HF items - fix it and make it right. Still a bargain on sale at $40.
