It looks like the saw has the easy start like a small Stihl. If so snatch starting will destroy the starter. I've seen a lot of people complain about the easy start breaking but it's from starting them wrong. Just smooth steady pull is all it takes and the spring does the rest.

I got the Portland 13" corded string trimmer because my dad let everything get grown up around my mom's house. So got that for $30 on a deal. I had that poor thing on a 250 feet of 16awg wire running 90 volts in 115f heat for 6 hour stints 3 days straight. Still cuts weeds down and its more of a trim your grass for hoa type tool 😂 so when i saw this with a coupon for 130 i got it. Starts better than even a stihl hand-me-down does. Granted it had sum hours onnit 😂 And definitely cuts better than the 40v hart 14inch i got for small limbs. Even tho that boasts 50cc type power. Mfr tried killing me cutting up an elm. Kept getting stuck trying to fell it. But couldn't pull it out the cut either because it would jump right when it bogged down so i kept having to run back to a tree with my arm width holding it 😂 had nothing to do with chain or how i was cutting it. Found out walmart uses vaping batteries for the 40v battery in a series. So they'd get hot and just voltage drop outta nowhere because i was cutting longer than 10 seconds. Long story short i got about 60 full size tress to fell marked up. Find out about long term but as of short term 130 saw shouldn't have problems quickly eating through 60 full size trees over a week. Just running ethanol free 93octane with full synthetic oil and shes purring and eating elm like no tomorrow.

Merry Christmas! Also picked one up with the 20% ITC coupon just to see what their about. Last thing I needed was another saw😅 anyway, all I've been able to find out about it is it looks like an Erbauer ecsp41 which is made by ALM manufacturing, whom I've also never heard of being an American. Mine also has a part# on case, behind muffler that starts with AL. Only have about 1.5 tanks through mine so cant say much other than for under $150, doesn't seem horrible but definitely better options available. Was going to uncrimp, de-cat and open the muffler up but being that it's stainless, changed my mind and will probably just make it a pipe when I get the time.

Forgot to add, it's sorta a pseudo clamshell. Crankcase and cylinder are actually separate so can be machined!

I was at Harbor Freight last week and seen this little saw for $179.99. Had it not been for what we spent on Christmas for our grandchildren I might have gotten it. Maybe in March or April or if I get lucky enough to win it in your giveaway. I use Harbor Freight a lot for throw way tools so I was a little worried about the saw. But if you do what I think you're going to do to it... it will be a good little saw for trimming or fire wood.

The recent icy weather brought down some tree limbs in my yard. I've been meaning to get a chainsaw eventually anyway, this just accelerated it. Would you recommend it to someone completely new to owning a chainsaw or should I go with something battery operated instead?
@417sawshop6 ай бұрын
I'm an advocate of buying the best you can afford, and I tend to lean towards the pro line saws. however, for certain situations such as yours, this would be a viable option. price point and ease of use. just keep in mind this saw is modified. This is not how it performs out of the box. the stock run is in previous video

@@417sawshop I went ahead and bought it. Made quick work of the fallen branches and now I got some firewood for next year. Feels like I should have bought a chainsaw years ago, it works so well for me.

The muffler and controls layout look all wrong. Better pictures on the HF website. Looks to be a Homelite now that they've discontinued their own line of gas saws.

It appears to be a rebadged 42cc poulan pro 18in saw so it should be pretty reliable and fairly easy to find parts for.

Loks exacty like the china made makita 3601/dolmar 352. They have been made there for a few years. With makita going battey only. Not surprised to see them rebranded. Could be the best cheap saw we have seem for some time. Every dolmar i have is fantastic, but expensive.

was wondering if you would recommend this saw for a diy homeowner trying to clear 5 or 10 small trees I have been searching for a cheapish saw to invest in
@417sawshop7 ай бұрын
you know I'm on the fence. if it could be bought with a significant coupon I say yes purely for price point alone. so 200$ to spend would get you the very basic Stihl MS 170 and its only a 30cc saw. so under 200$ for a 42cc 18 inch bar not bad.

Definitely Stihl more so for parts replacement availability. But the portland is bigger cc (bigger motor)

Hey man! What’s a “clamshell”?
@417sawshop6 ай бұрын
most homeowners' saws are clam shell. on clam shells the motor is a complete unit dropped in the saw body it has a small pan over the crank enclosing the engine when opened it resembles how a clam shell opens. it's hard to machine the base because the bearing pockets are made into this style of engine so improvements can be had from building/porting clams but not as much gains than say from a non ckam style. the non clam is generally higher end saws or pro models the cylinder separates from the saw as 1 unit, leaving the piston, crank in the lower have that makes up the saw body. it's easier to machine cylinders from these types of saws and generally more performance can be gained.

@mgpvii5 ай бұрын
Review seems to be based on cost. Why not something you want to use everyday? …”something to throw in the back of your truck”. Just because it wasn’t expensive? How about you use it for a while and then form an opinion of it. Who’s to say it won’t last long. You make two cuts, and say it cuts pretty good and assume it won’t last because it was inexpensive.
@417sawshop5 ай бұрын
not assuming anything, my opinions are based on my experience with various types of equipment from various price points. and 1 of the points of the giveaway to let someone use it and hopefully give their experiences along the way. unfortunately, in this economy, the price point has to be a factor in our purchases, especially if you're a small business owner.
