In Shoptalk #2 I demonstrate how I use slightly modified Harbor Freight / Home Depot spring clamps to attach solid wood edge banding on some melamine. I also show how the Harbor Freight #33 hand plane will trim the banding perfectly flush.

Well done! I'm using similar clamps but with size 84 rubber bands which are 1/2 inch wide. I also used my bench grinder and quickly ground a groove in the end of the clamp handles to help keep the band from sliding off. Great idea and thanks for sharing!

Great idea for a more permanent clamp I used the metal 1$ clamp from Home Depot And strips of bicycle inner tube crazy glued around the metal tips and you put the plastic covers back over the ends the work fantastic

I'm working on a coffee table and put on some walnut edge banding this weekend, and like you, I prefer a plane to trim the banding over a router. I first take the banding through my drum sander to get it within 1/8 or about 3mm proud of the thickness of the sheet glue and then take it down flush with a no. 62 LN. Walnut is just such a pleasure to work with. I too saw those bandiclamps but decided to use my parallel clamps instead. If it weren't for the difference in grain pattern, you'd never know I edge banded the plywood. I mitered the banding and it was the first time I've used my Kapex for miter joints and I was amazed at how accurate it was. I did have to use my lion miter to dial in the very last joint though. Grizzly has those framing miters on sale now. If you've never used one, they're a pleasure to use and give you a lot of control.

Good to see your process. There was a time when I was interested in the lion miters, but at this point I stick with a miter shooting board to nail my miters.

Thank you very much for that. I'm going to buy some rubber bands. I've subscribed and will be watching you from time to time. Oh I also liked the hand plane concept.

Great idea. If you use Theraband latex excise bands instead of elastics they would last a lot longer, won't dry up and you can cut them to any length and width you want. You can also get them in different strengths. And relatively inexpensive. And they are handy around the shop for so many other things.

Another Great tip Marty Thank You for this. You are going to make me a big of HF LOL, one just opened up about 10 miles from where I live so I think I need to make a road trip, also swing by HD and see if my HD has the bag of clamps you bought. So I see you use the Titebound standard glue, do you like that better than type 11 or 111. I am not sure what part of the country you are from but I have noticed that depending where you live HD products can be a hit or miss at times. That is the big box store where I live unless I want to travel a little bit. Thanks for your videos as I am learning and enjoyed these very much. Steve

I live in Southern California. For the most part I use standard Titebond or their liquid hide glue (for boxes or other difficult situations where you might have to clean up glue squeeze out after it has dried). I have a Lowes and HD within a few miles of me. Thanks for your comments.

no sh#t!- ive been pondering how to make a diy version of those bandy clamps for the longest time..i tried epoxying a couple rubberbands to the inside of the clip but that was a mess..haha thats awesome marty thanks for sharing that.gonna give this a try for sure..and now i have to go.to harbor freight and buy the 33. for a rainy day when I know I have a few hours to kill I'll do some fine-tuning once then again that's an awesome idea man

Thanks Joe :-) Yeah, those Rockler clamps are very nice but the price really adds up quickly. This is my new go-to clamping method of edging. The video shows my first attempt, and I was very happy with the results. My wallet's happy too.

I did that exact same experiment about a month ago. I didn't like the way the rubber bands stretched so I purchased some Big Ass rubber bands made out of silicon, (yep, that's what they're called) from Amazon, cut them up and zip tied them to the clamps. They work just fine. Still much more inexpensive than Rockler. Let's see whatcha come up with for the bench cookie hack. (Hint, I made mine out of scrap wood and old mouse pads)
@MartyBacke
@MartyBacke 8 жыл бұрын
Good idea to try some heavier duty rubber bands. I have a set of bench cookies from Rockler and think they're great. But I only need four. The thing with the spring clamps is that you need a lot, so the expense becomes an issue. And that's why I'm going with the rubber hand hack. I'm OK with buying the bench cookies. Thanks for the comments.

Hi, I like the rubber band trick, but you may want to change the title just a little bit to let non-subscribers know that this is a part 2 of what would seem to be a clamp comparison video. I was expecting to see Harbor Freight Spring Clamps, not HDX Spring Clamps.

I believe that the plane doesn't dig into the melamine, but I don't understand why. Please explain.
@MartyBacke
@MartyBacke 7 жыл бұрын
With the rear end of the plane on top of the melamine that keeps the blade from touching the melamine until the vary end. And since the blade is set for a very fine cut and the melamine is very hard and slippery, the blade just doesn't do any damage. I've trimmed dozens of feet of melamine like this and have never scratched the melamine in any way that I can detect.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just stretch those large rubber bands all the way around the shelf. that way you could do two sides at once. Yes I know that this video was about the comparison of band clamps. But why use clamps at all if not needed.
@MartyBacke
@MartyBacke 6 жыл бұрын
These rubber bands barely fit over the clamps. They would never have fit over the board. Finally, the board was used for demonstration purposes (I threw it away afterward) so there wouldn't be much point in not using the clamps.
