I could see for a more precise buildup, it makes sense to TIG. Fireball Tool did a video on removing the seam in the tube and made his own cutter using a hard face rod he sanded the flux from, and TIG welded on. It worked.

Something to notice, i gues the tig Rod is stellite 6/12 but with tig most of the time you'l need around 3 to 4 layers because of the hardfacing stuff is mixing together with your base material. And also cooling down slowly is pretty improtant due to cracks

*@**0:54** Love those swirls, to me that's artwork. Was told that logic behind was to never give a rock a consistent angle of attack to pry or lever the hard facing rod (Chromium rod, cobalt, stoddite, etc) off your shovel, and that the swirls mean the angle the rock hits the hard facing rod is always changing.*

I use a positive pressure mask for certain things like gouging, I know too many old welders with chronic lung problems and what I suspect is heavy metal fume induced brain problems from the parkinsons like symptoms they have. If you can smell it, you're inhaling it.

I use the 2.7mm Dia Stellite 6 Tig rods for welding Shear blade tips, It is a pretty nice rod to weld with but you can't put more than about 5mm thick or it will crack, I also peen the welds each time, to stop them cracking when they cool and then the whole blade needs to be cooled slowly in sand buckets so the whole thing cools evenly. Good to see welding of different uses and for special reasons.

i'm looking to try and make a wood splitter using mild steel and arc welding hardfacing rod on top after i've ground a 45 degree edge to the mild steel part. my question is - do i need to lay down a 'buttering' layer of e.g. 7016 first and then put the hardfacing on top of that or is it ok to just weld hardfacing rod on top of the mild steel plate? i've heard that a buttering layer should be put down first but when i have seen videos on hardfacing i have just seen the hardfacing rod being welded onto the steel itself. what would you recommend??

How about adding hardface on top of an exsisting hard base? Does it need to be buttered with a soft material first or can you lay right over a exsisting hard surface?

My leaf spring hangers on my 1982 freightliner I would weld a square piece of flat bar steel where the leaf would lay on. Its alot easier than laying down beads to build up the worn metal. Can welding square pads or bolting them to the bucket be possible or is every job different?

It's common to weld sections of wear resistant steel like ar 400 onto things to avoid needing to do so much hardfacing. It's not something I've ever done though.

Using Stellite/Stoodite 6 just for hardfacing is a bit overkill. You usually use that if you also have to fight corrosion at the same time, as these are very expensive metals and just abrasion resistance can be had for a fraction...
