I am so thankful I started listening to Dave a few years ago. I recently graduated from College, I went to school at a cheap university on a scholarship and graduated without paying a dime or taking out student loans. Got a job, and I will have six months of expenses saved up in about a month. Always avoid debt (no car payment, no loans) and you will sleep much better at night.

Love Dave’s take on this issue! Its not unreasonable at all for his wife to say they should save up and buy a car, in facts it’s really smart and he should respect his wife’s commitment to protecting there financial figure. If it were me I’d kindly suggest he take on a side job to save for a newer, nicer car if that’s what he wants or cut out some of his other wants.

When you marry outside your culture, there can be significant differences in value systems especially when it comes to money. The husband may want to live day by day, while the wife wants to live under her means and invest in her future. It's a tough one and I believe has contributed to the deterioration of their marriage.

obviously, the husband threating to leave was a stupid childish move but not everyone thinks the same as Dave but Dave needs to be more understanding. I bought a car on finance 8 years ago even though I had the money cash. I put the $30,000 that would have spent on the car and put that in the S&P 500 and it grossly outperformed the 2.9% I was paying on the car. It was one of the best decision I made. I have a lot of respect for Dave and his mentality but not everyone that disagrees with him is immediately wrong. If you are just financing because you don't have the money, yes listen to Dave. If you have the money cash and think you can outperform the interest and are in a safe enough position to take that risk, I say do it. My biggest issue with the baby steps that it assumes that everyone financial situation is exactly the same and everyone has the same goals. Take the good points from his steps, the ones you can apply to your life and the rest just don't apply to you.
@mqayyum9226
@mqayyum9226 5 жыл бұрын
well in the last 10 years people have made a ton of money investing in real estate and the stock market. When you finance a car for 5 or 7 years you pay it back with interest irrespective of how the stock market is doing. You did take a risk and it turned out to be a good financial decision based on a bear market. If you can predict the market and are okay with taking risks this approach works. If we are talking in terms of financial gain it would have been an even smarter move to buy a used $15k car and invest the other 15k in stock market. S&P 500 did not rise as fast as (the depreciation of new car - depreciation of used car per year)

Alot of people dont know , used car dealers buy there "cars" 99% of the time from auto auctions and they know just about as much as you do about the history of the car. They just get car fax and drive to see what sounds like a problem if everything looks fine they clean it up and put up the ad as well maintained , full synthetic oil etc etc all BS. The problem with buying cars from private partys is you get alot of car flippers that most of them will sell your soul before telling you about a major problem they found in it because they loose the money they invested on these cars. So if you plan on buying a car and lower your chances on getting a lemon or a car that nor the seller or the buyer have any history about except car fax then buy from a private party that has owned the car for a couple years and can prove it with documentation like title in their name from a couple years back when it was registered when they bought it. There are good cars out there but bring some one mecanically inclined even if you have to pay them $50 for 30 min. They will know what to look for when a car has been crashed or of idle ,cracked frames , transmision going out etc . Your brother or father or friend will most likely know less than you so there opionions wont help much!

The only bad part about Dave Ramsey's philosophy on cars is yes it's true it's very bad to have a car loan it's probably one of the worst things you can do financially but people do need transportation and it is very expensive yes you can buy a cheap car but the problem is people that don't know how to work on them or don't understand them a used car can wind up costing a fortune depending on the make or the model one trip to the mechanic can easily be $1,000 depending on what needs to be done especially with a lot of these newer cars you can't even work on some of them yourself some of them you can but like I said that depends on the make or the model I myself can do most things to a vehicle so a cheap vehicle works great for me now back in the day when Dave Ramsey had his so-called Bondo buggy you could keep those old things running relatively easily but nowadays with the technology in vehicles $1,000 car if you can even find anything that runs decent for $1,000 may need thousands of dollars and work in some cases just to make it reliable sometimes you get lucky and you do find them but they're very few and far between where you can just buy them and drive them

This is one thing I disagree with Dave Ramsey about. Buying a sensible new car with a warranty is not a bad decision. I bought a new Honda Civic for 20k and had it 10 years with no issues. Sold it for 3k with well over 100 thousand miles. Thats not a bad life decision.
@jcspruill84
@jcspruill84 5 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. I get the feeling him and people who view car ownership the way he does, all live in a place with very very good public transportation. Where having a $3k car is no big deal b/c it's only used on weekend getaways. I financed a car, it is driven everyday to work. Without it I don't get to work for more than about $9 per hr (only jobs within "reasonable" walking distance, if 10 miles one way is reasonable). I can not afford where I live to have my car be unreliable, and lets face it, cars sold for under $3-$4k are usually unreliable. I bought my Corolla brand new in 2010 and financed it (at 0% apr) for well under sticker. It now has 175k miles on it and when it starts to cost me a car payment to keep on the road, guess what I'm gonna do... Also I know of multiple multi millionaires who finance(d) cars....he's just wrong in this vid unless he asked like 4 of his friends and stopped there.

He's not saying car ownership on a new car is bad. Financing one is bad. I got a 2014 Fiesta when it was 2 years old and had 21,000 miles in cash. It now has 75,000 miles and it was the best financial desition I ever made. Buying a super cheap old car or not buying a car can be $$$$$$$$$$

Gemini Eric there was no confusion on my part about what “pre owned” means but there might be some that could use the info. I’ve had good luck with the pre owned 2015 Ford Focus I’m driving. Any car option a person takes requires research. I do know buying a new car is a stupid decision from personal experience. Honestly, unless you want a recently made car, buying a car around 100k miles might be good as well. But a person should take into account what the car is for, how long they expect to keep it, etc. As for the “sales gimmick,” anything you buy could be as such. This is a game for one that does their homework. My car, for example, was priced fairly based on the Nada Guide and KBB.

Yes, I'm sure I have some electrical vibe going on, but the two times I had bought a new car I got a lemon. I mean a brand new Toyota Corolla with five miles on it went out in only 8mo. The engine (computer chip) broke. Years later I got a ford escape it was one year old with less than 20k miles on it. It had problem after problem, and recall after recall. Forget it. I have much better luck with 20 year old cars. Little work and easier to fix.

I was sold a lemon, lost $10,000 5 years back. I was frustrated and said i would never by used again, i was so angry. It wasnt until after a few years that a was able to let it go and focus again and change my mind on only buying new. The husband probably hasnt forgot how it felt like to lose and be robbed by buying used. Yes he is being childish and hurtful but i wouldnt go the extreme saying he doesn't love her. All car loans are not bad. If you get a reasonably priced new car, keep the loan short, and pay it off quickly, it makes sense. Additionally, if you are living a relatively frugal life and continuously saving and investing, financial goals will be met. You also need to take care of the car and keep it a really long time. This will drive down your annual cost of transpiration. In my early twenties I bought a new toyota with a loan and kept it for 18 years. My next car was a new chevy and I put half down, made double payments finishing the loan quickly (it is 16 years old now). I bought my wife a car and paid cash. The used car market seems to be awfully efficient. In general, the price of a used car accounts for every penny of value (utility) and risk. Every time I look at used car prices they do not seem cheap to me. In many cases it is impossible to tell of someone has run the engine hard or skipped maintenance, or if there is hidden damage.

Well, you sir, are wise to have done what works for you. Dave Ramsey's advice is for the broke masses that can't think for themselves. There's more than one way to financial freedom. You have self control and compensate through your frugal living. However, please don't recommend this lifestyle to younger folk. We just don't all have the wisdom and self control you do.
@georgewashington938
@georgewashington938 5 жыл бұрын
@@BriLoveMusic good point. then it is good to talk about smart ratios. Max car loan should be no more than half your average annual income. The term of the loan should be no more than 48 months and you should plan / be able to make 1 and a half payments each month. You should plan to keep the car at least 15 years. When I bought my new '89 toyota it was $13k and my income was in the high $20k range. My next car was a new '04 chevy and it cost $30k and I put down $15k.... By the way, the toyota sold for $1k after 18 years of ownership. My annual cost of ownership (including maintenance and taxes, but not including gas and tires) was approximately $833.

@@georgewashington938 Agree almost across the board. Just a note on the loan length. I used the interest rates on various loan lengths per $10000 borrowed from my credit union, just to see what it really costs to go longer. Their options go up to 7 years and are for new cars or used cars no more than five years old. With 48 months as the baseline, if you go to 60 months, but pay the 48-month payments, it costs an extra $11. For $11 you buy the option to pay $41 less per month if you have some financial crisis (and not lose the car). Seems like a good trade-off to me. And as Dave Ramsey likes to say about things that go against his dogma, "no one ever became a millionaire by saving $3 per year". If you go to 72 months, but again pay it as if it is 48 months, it'll cost you about $68 in extra interest for the ability to drop your payment by, coincidentally, $68 per month. If you went to 84 months, again paying it as a 48-month loan, there is a pretty big spike. Now you are paying $364 extra to be able to drop-down $82 per month if needed. At what amounts to an extra $91 per year if things go well, I think this crosses the line, but I suppose it depends on how likely you think you are to need to free up an extra $82 per month. -- These all scale linearly, so a $17000 loan would be just multiplying all of the numbers by 1.7. Though the actual rates could be higher or lower depending on your credit union or bank.

@@JonathanLov I hear ya - I am a self saved/invested millionaire and I think blindly avoiding car loans pushes people to not do what is needed because most people earlier in their life will need a car loan. The real rule is: Do not over-buy, and do not change them frequently. Push your annual cost of ownership down. Having a reliable decent car is a major part of keeping stress low and eliminating reasons why you can't get to work early every single day so you can focus on generating income and not dealing with car troubles.

Our family mechanic said none of the repairs were actually done in the car. So she wasted 4k. So we took it to a 3rd mechanic and he basically said he wasn’t going to charge us he said go buy a used or new Toyota. He said it would cost like 3k in repairs and he said we would keep having to get repairs done. So We were in the hole for 4,800 at this point in my opinion could have been used for down payment on a used/ new Toyota. Now a days used cars and new ones are similar in price. You do not know how someone treated the car before you got it. Its a huge risk I rather finance a new car and make an extra principal payment on the vehicle and pay less interest pay the car off sooner than pay money to keep fixing on car that won’t run it hurts more to know you payed someone 1k and your car is still not fix I can sleep good knowing I am paying a note but my car is new and I am taking car of it and not paying for fake repairs.

Buying a new car with a loan is not necessarily stupid. If you need the car and will use it for the next 11 to 14 years, then it could be a good decision. You know who abused that car. I got mine, and paid it off in 18 months. When I got rid of it, 12 years later, I had 10 years of triple car payments in the bank for the next new car. If you have discipline and only buy what you need for transportation, it can work out and cause less headaches.
