I once worked on maths olympiad and physics olympiad at high school and I was awarded with the third class prize in my province. That was the best time period of my life.

Zeb said the Putnam is extremely hard. He got a gold at the IMO in 2006. He sometimes does well on Putnam, sometimes doesn't, depending on his sleep and preparation, but it's a harder test.

Kevin Brady yes. By looking at the papers, I honestly found Putnam to be much harder because it has elements of multivariable calculus and college level topics which aren't present in IMO. Zeb Brady is truly a prodigy by all means of the word and has inspired me. I truly wish him best of luck in his future👍

I will always have huge respect for IMO participants - the problems are really on quite a different level.

I've been told by my professor that he knew a field medalist who tried out a Putnam test and got a ZERO.

cultural longevity, IMO. both of these cultures have emphasized the importance of their children learning to read and write and do math, and have prospered because of it. those who forget the importance of these basics end up going through wild fluctuations and tribal death

@minifoo8 Yes but doing not so well on the putnam doesnt imply that you do not have the potential to do well.

@minifoo8 Just an anomaly. The truth is that most of them would do well on the Putnam. Maybe this field medalist wasn't trying hard enough, or maybe he did not reach mathematical maturity until graduate school. Either way, the putnam exam shouldn't be much of a problem to someone with the mathematical knowledge and aptitude that a fields medalist typically possesses. So potential fields medalists should be able to ace the putnam, but the converse is not true, though..

Well that's hard to believe, a natural genius excels at these types of tests usually without much preparation, just with intuition alone. Take Feynman for example, genius of the highest caliber, participated in Putnam at short notice, absolutely blew away the competition and became a Putnam Fellow. It is however possible that the Field Medalist is not a natural genius, but a genius by working very hard (of course combined with a very superior yet not 'Putnamy' intellect).

They're mostly Asians or Jewish, haha. I'm not trying to stereotype, but it's amazing how American science is dominated by Jews and Asians.

And they gave up their lives for it. I've never done this type of thing before, and I have a Ph.D. in mathematics. Looking back, I rather play sports than get involved with mathematics contests and burn myself out prematurely.

And my son, Zeb, has a PhD in math from Stanford, too, is currently at a math event in Serbia, and will be doing post doc work at MIT. Following your dream, if it's really your dream and not your parents', doesn't burn you out. He was in this film, too.

Kevin Brady How did he prepare for the IMO? Was he always good at these questions (is this a developed skill or did it come naturally)? I go to a 'selective entry school' (what you in America call 'magnet schools', I believe) with the best-performers in mathematics in the country (including alumni who've become mathematicians), and I want to make some competition. I've never been good at these sorts of questions, however I'm top in my class at school (I used to be stupid and lazy, failing every test and scholarship, but after hard work and hours each day I've become what some may call "academically excellent" (although I don't like the label too much).
