Truly 'born on the 4th of July', Stephen Foster began his life in 1826 Pennsylvania. Though having a troubled and tragically brief life spanning only 37 years, Foster nevertheless wrote memorable words and melodies for over 200 songs.
Many of Foster's most well-known songs were created for the blackface minstrel stage performances popular in the mid-1800's prior to the Civil War, such as "The Camptown Races", "The Glendy Burke", and "The Old Folks at Home." In spite of the fact that he only visited the south briefly on his honeymoon in 1852, many of these songs featured Southern themes and settings romanticizing antebellum plantation life. Later in the 1850's and prior to his death in 1864, Foster increasingly embraced the cause of abolition and in his music he began to write songs of a romantic and more sentimental nature, more suited to the public's growing appetite for 'parlor' music, or music performed in the home for entertainment of family and friends. It was his desire to encourage better "taste... among refined people" by creating lyrics that eliminated "the trashy and really offensive words" often found in "songs of that order" (quite a few of which he had earlier written himself !).
In the 1850’s, the United States was experiencing a recession and Stephen’s home town of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, was suffering from record unemployment. Compounding their situation in the summer of 1854, cholera struck killing 400 people in just two weeks. When Firth. Pond & Co. of New York published this song in 1855, "Hard Times" was advertised as “just the song for the times.” Later, this parlor song once again became relevant during the turmoil of the War Between the States.
Written in 1854, "Hard Times Come Again No More" is one of Foster's serious 'sentimental' songs that appealed to the listener's better nature. It's melody, borrowed from a hymn he heard in an African-American church in his childhood, he combined with a four-part chorus in his lyrics, making it more minstrel in style, yet devoid of any references to slave-life or dialect. To this day it remains one of his most enduring compositions and one that we never tired of performing.

Besides while many southerners did fight for house and home the South ruled by its planter class seceded to preserve slavery and the average soldier who enlisted was about 30% more likely to own slaves than the average southerner and there are many letters written by poor and low ranking soldiers after the emancipation proclamation which were incredibly racist

@@pedrosalguero5664 You are wrong. Less than 2% of U.S. European "Whites" owned a slave. Over 80% of the U.S. "money lender" population owned slaves and they also owned over 94% of the slave ships. Lastly, the U.S. War of Secession was not about slavery but rather about state rights versus Federal rights (in regards to economic law and taxation). Abraham Lincoln himself stated he attacked the South to preserve the Republic not to abolish nor preserve slavery. I recommend you read the writings of Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee for the U.S. history has long been re-written by the "money-lenders".

I don't know how this band crossed into my life. I'm from the interior of Brazil, I've always heard a lot of "Brazilian country" so I think I got a taste for it. But it's funny how things happen, right in front of one of the biggest problems I've ever had, I met this band and their songs. The voice, the banjo, all the noises in each song made me want to move on. Maybe too sentimental, but that's what I felt with all these songs.

@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand
@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Жыл бұрын
Thanks for noticing. That was a Tim Allen hat (I think he's no longer making them). At the time, he was a 'campaign-style' reenactor, making custom period hats as a 'side-hustle'. At first I was shocked at how wide the brim was, but I soon got over it. For a long time it was my favorite headgear. As time went on, I switched it off now and again with a black slouch having a slightly smaller brim (which I still wear in winter months where I now live). The stovepipe hat was a replacement for an even taller one I'd picked up at Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts (an 1830's era historical site), where they were making them onsite in a working living-history display shop. The brim on that one eventually blew out and we used the the crown for our tip jar. The one you see in the more recent videos was a reasonably priced import from Jamaica or some such place and is no longer available. However, you can still get any of the hats that I've worn, including the straw top hat, from Dirty BIlly's Hats in Gettysburg PA. Tell him, Joe sent you !

Sorry to disappoint, but the only place you'll be able to see us 'in action' going forward, will be on KZfaq. The band DIS-banded at the end of 2019, due to aging-out mostly. Most of us started together in 1989, when we were already in our mid-40's. The 'annoyances' of aging, PC/Cancel Culture, and the restrictions of Covid combined in a sort of perfect storm that made it clear the time had come for us to 'drop the mic’ and leave the stage... It is said, ‘All good things’… etc., etc’. And so they have. It was a GREAT ride while it lasted, thanks to good folks like yourself. But now, for us the ‘event’ has closed and it’s time to go home. We have been truly blessed. Thanks for asking though. I wish we could have had better news for you. That said, we truly appreciate your kind inquiry. Hopefully, you'll keep an eye out for us on our YT channel - kzfaq.info/love/6RHX6u-WDoS0EuMgIyfHrA. Be sure to subscribe, like, and click on the 'bell' to get notifications of new releases.

I read of late that Stephen Foster's statue was toppled by mobs.😢

Don't know where you read that, but in 2018 the st atue was removed from where it had been for 118 years to a lot next to a dog park in Pittsburg. The PC 'mob' was responsible for that, I reckon.

@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand By PC mob you mean the civil rights movement? It's been a controversy in Pittsburgh since the 1960's.

@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBandsuch a shame, your music is such a beautiful connection to the past but your statements online really put a damper on it all. I’d love to support you to the fullest extent, but referring to the civil rights movement as the ‘PC mob’ really shows that you hold yourself to those historic standards in the worst of ways. Such a shame. ‘tis the song, the sigh of the weary.

The confederacy had nearly 3 times the amount of latinos fighting on it's side than the North did. By the end of that war there were 10,000 Latinos fighting and dying for the South. Something we don't see or hear much about these days though older Civil War movies did tend to include Latinos from time to time. We also fought and died in the Alamo fighting AGAINST Santa Ana.
