This was an outstanding video, and Mr Grant was just perfect. Was extremely intelligent, but gracious and may be humble for lack of a better term, because throughout the whole program I knew how smart he was as he went through the instrument, but he wanted to teach us, and it was so very refreshing. And I must say that the addition of the Theatre organ part was outstanding as well. Bravo!

I had never heard a Holtkamp organ that I liked, but this organ has done nothing but impress me. Nice playing and very nice presentation.

Beautiful rendition of the Fletcher. My late friend, Keith Chapman, played this at Wanamaker's in Philadelphia to tremendous effect.

I was fortunate enough to sit in the Wanamaker loft once when Keith played the noontime concert, way back in 1985 (or 86 maybe). Will never forget that.

David, thank you for this and thank you to Mr. Grant for sharing his talents. What he said about the room was right. I think it was G. Donald Harrison who said the most important stop on the organ is the room. He was also right about the perception of Holtkamp organs. I have never played one that I liked, I think because of the era in which they were built. I detest the thin screeching organs of the 1960s and 1970s. It was a reaction to the overly romantic/symphonic organs of the 1920s and 1930s, but I think the pendulum swung too far! This organ sounds wonderful, and it opened my eyes to not think of Holtkamp organs from my limited experience of them! Also the tuning on this organ is impeccable--kudos to the organ curator!

This is one of the few Holtkamps that I actually like just for the pipes alone but since you also have MIDI as well as HAUPTWERK installed, now you have several organs installed into one console!

Cavaille-Coll said that the room was the most important stop on the organ. I never liked the screech of those 1960s//1970s organs either. The "Orgelbewegung" (Organ Reform Movement) came about because American soldiers, some of whom were organists, heard the historic organs in Germany and realized that American organs of that period were not suitable for Bach & pre-Bach music. So, American organ builders recorded those organs and tried to copy the sound. However, their copies sounded "screechy" because the recording microphones were placed very near the pipes instead of in the room -- a confirmation of Cavaille-Coll's thinking. A few years ago, I heard a lecture in which it was stated that prior to the Reformation (1517), organs were sounded more mellow but, with the introduction of congregational hymn-singing in the Reformation, stronger mixtures were added to give more "leading power" to the singing.

I usually like the theater organ videos because they have more tremulants and wider range of sound than most church organs. But this one has a beautiful soft sound with the celestes, great oboe stop and many others. Everything you say about the great sounds in the video I agree great sounds. Thank you for the video.

Regardless, the strings on these Holtkamp organs are wonderful. Clear, warm and pure sounds. I am not a Neo Baroque guy, but I love this builder. Is there a Ludwig Tone?

I didn't realize Holtkamp was still building organs. This one seems like it would be equally adept at playing Baroque or Romantic music, which you can't really say about the earlier instruments. I must have missed it - is the bottom keyboard the Choir, or the Great? (Weird to be talking about a Choir manual on a Holtkamp...)

French inclined reeds on an organ and acoustic that doesn’t really need them... Silly Holtkamp. As with many builders that survived the neo baroque revival in the US they have had to find a more refined style of voicing and tonal finishing in order to remain relevant.
