This is probably one of the best vids ever! I applied it to a mix and realized it was missing thickness and presence, so threw on 300 hz and 1k. Then I went in to individual tracks to apply it to the ones that needed it. Now it sounds so much better and fuller! This is actually a good process for mixing a song. It’s like top down mixing but rather than keeping the moves on the master bus you do it to figure out what the song needs then apply it to the tracks within

I did a mix of our coverband (pop songs) and the results were not strong. I decided to start over and just almost religiously followed the mix cheat sheet and it got me so much farther in maybe 30 minutes then all the time spent previously. It was also a real learning experience as it helped me pinpoint and remedy problems I just wouldn't know how to fix previously. Really cool to realise, thans a lot!

haha! nope, you're not the only one using that EQ...I love all the Renaissance stuff, and I use the "old" skin version too lol...just used to it I guess. By the way, I need to tell you how much I love the refresh you've given your brand over the last year...I actually dropped off following for a bit because it seemed like you might have been just getting burned out a smidge, but lately it seems like you've gotten a "second wind" and I'm just loving all your new content...plus the look, feel and editing of the videos has totally been jacked to a whole new level too!

Old habits die hard, I guess. It just gets the job done and why change a routine that works well and has for many years? It's also a full channelstrip. So I would say it's a different tool in the toolbox. Pro Q3 is great for analyzing details and has a totally different interface. In terms of sound quality, I can't hear much difference. They are both great EQs. Sorry for the cliché answer. But just use what ever you feel comfortable with and get awesome at what you do. ☺️🙏 All the best.

Thanks for this great series of magic frequencies! Have you planned a series on the magic compression techniques for each instrument (parallel compression on the drum bus, how to compress a kick/snare/tom/bass/vocal, artistic pump, side-chain kick-bass, etc.)? That would be wonderful!

Should these tips be applied to my EQ when I’m tracking? I’m new to DAW life; will be getting my tracks mixed by someone else, but curious how much of this mix wisdom should be applied to tracking. I’m using an Apollo Twin X and am experimenting with what it can do. I like to record the stems with some juice already on it to etch it in stone rather than record “clean” tracks. Really appreciate your insights.

I wonder how many pro audio engineers treat frequencies like actual notes, because that's what they are right? Like wouldn't a mix sound more harmonized and musical if you apply this logic? Example: If you want to boost the midrange octave and the song is in the key of D, why boost 1khz and not 1175hz? Because that's a D, whereas 1khz is like a flat C. It's just a thought I had recently and haven't really experimented with it myself yet (I'm an amateur anyway).

A good idea when checking reference tracks is to just make it so your mix would at least FIT IN on a playlist of similar music. Doesn't have to sound identical, but on a playlist of similar music it shouldn't stand out like a sore thumb.

When the bass region in the whole mix is too low, it sounds like it “hangs in the air”, despite having steady sub and low mid and upper. 250 Hz and there around is very important. I hear big label mixes where they have busted up this bass frequency area, because they wanted to give the kick-drum it all.
