Hardcover vs paperback, the age old questions. In this video we talk about the difference between the too and which is right for you.
The hardcover book is the most prestigious of the book binding world. The hardcover book is the flagship edition of any book released. For debut books in most mainstream genres, the hardcover book is typically released several months to a year before the paperback, in order to maximize sales to the portion of the market most dedicated to buying that particular title.
Unlike the softcover book, the hardcover has versatility in the way the cover is made. Your cover options are cloth, leather, printed/laminated, bonded leather, and of course a dust jacket. Hardcover book printing also has options like custom end-leaves, gilded edges, speckled and edge staining.
Paperback Books
Paperback books, also known as a softcover or perfect bound books are the most commonly printed books in the publishing arena. Due to the materials involved in making a paperback book, it is the most cost effective if you are looking for cheap book printing.
In this video we will talk about all of the following:
Custom End-Leaves
End-leaves are the sheets of paper that lay on the inside front and back cover.
Gilded Edges
A process most popular on bibles, where all three edges of the book are sanded and almost polished before laying on a thin film of gold foil which is transferred to the book edge with a heated silicon rubber roll.
Speckled Edges and Edge Staining
Speckled edges and edge staining are both fun ways to bring a little variety to your hardcover book.
Signature Sewn Books
Smyth sewing is a method of bookbinding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Signatures are folded from 8, 16, 24, or 32 pages.

I used to only read hardcover but after finally reading a paperback I like it better. I just wish paperbacks weren't so easy to damage though. All the ones at the library are always ripped.

It's normal that at library they're like that. They've been used by many people and not all of them are very careful with books. In the library, I've encountered a lot of hardcover books very damaged as well.

Thanks for the vid, really clarified some things for me. I am now solidly for hardbacks. Sure its more expensive but I want my books lasting atleast until my children's children.

Thanks for the information. In my country it's hard to get hard cover English books even if you have the money , unless you pay 3 times the price of the book to ship it yourself, so my collection is Mostly paper back. Hopefully one day I get some hard cover titles.

@you know it better You are going to lose that info if your book gets damaged, you don't need a special edition or anything but a good hardcover is always preferable.

I usually get hardback due to buying my favorite authors newest books. I would get soft if I could but waiting months for the soft back to come out is a no go for me

I used to think hardcover was for snobs. But then i realized I'm just poor haha. Seriously though, i enjoy paperback for out of house. And hardcover for in-house reading.

What's the name of the tune that plays from 0:10 to 0:29? Sounds nice lol. Also as much as I love hardcover, paperback is easier on my wallet haha.

Do people actually care whether they get the hardcover or paperback!?? sounds a bit ridiculous

People do care actually. We get a lot of clients requesting hardcover for a multitude of reasons. Some feel it is more nostalgic, others like it for the longevity of the product. It is definitely a personal opinion.

Yes, I prefer a hardback bc it looks good on my bookshelf and also, I move fairly often so it keeps the book intact. That being said, I do have plenty of paperbacks and I do not care very much.
