I once knew a guy who knew 2 guys who used to do home invasions while the families were home and awake. They got into the house by one guy ringing the door bell as a distraction as the other guy would simultaneously run into the sliding glass door in the back of the house. The safety glass, which is on all sliding glass doors by law, would just shatter into small pieces and not even cut or injure the guy as he ran through the glass door. He would then open the front door for his accomplice or have one of the family members do it. Here’s what I recommend: 1. Get a Yorkshire, Polmeranian, or a Chihuahua as an inside dog. These breeds of dogs are natural yappers and territorial. 2. While you are home and awake, keep your handgun with you at all times. While sleeping, keep the gun readily accessible with a round chambered. Keep it in an easy access locked small safe hidden under the master bathroom vanity. 3. Replace your bedroom door with a solid wooden door with a deadbolt. If you have kids, let them know that the master bedroom is the safe room and also let them know other contingencies. 4. Mount chicken wire (or similar) over the glass of your sliding glass doors. Use sheet metal screws with wire harness clamps.

I have a tip. You can also replace the door of your master bedroom with a solid wood exterior door and deadbolt lock plus a brace from the door to the floor. This will give you and the police more time to respond wile giving you a safer place for you and your family to make a stand. If you keep a firearm locked up, this can give you the time needed to get it into action.

If you are gonna have landscaping close to your home, make it thorny shrubbery or plants that bite back. Bull nettles, rose bushes, blackberry bushes, porcupine tomatoes, cacti (if available and possible), crown of thorns and the like. There's quite a few prickly plants out there that can punch through cloth and leather like wet paper, giving potential burglars a much harder time getting in if they're planted by your windows.

I have about 12 mile's of barbed wire, a few miles of concertina, steel posts, a 7 ft fence around my backyard combined with bamboo, and a 4ft fence In front of the 7ft one creating a "moat" area. I also have a battering ram resistant steel plates attached to my front door frame and a door club on the inside. All four sides of the house have hardwired and solar motion detection lighting. This spring I will be adding more layers of security to the front of my house. I will be changing my landscaping to include an anti vehicle barriers, rose bushes under my windows, and 1/4 steel protective covers to my front door hinges.

I've been hardening my home for years and I think this is a great video! I would add long screws to the hinges, strike plates, and latches to all exterior doors. These 3" plus screws anchor the hardware to the door framing which make the doors extremely difficult to kick ins. Also a security system and applying a security film to all windows. Bottom line, though is if someone wants in, they'll get in as someone pointed out below with the ax example. My outlook is to delay them long enough to be ready for them should they get in. That's all you need to do.

If it's a local or national home security monitoring service, I can tell you for a fact that the cops can call them and tell them they're conducting police business and have them turn off or ignore silent alarms. Local cops can also call your cable or internet provider and give them their code and request immediate access to your internet so they can monitor everything you do online, including banking, stored passwords, emails, youtube, facebook, etc.

@llwscott5720
@llwscott5720 6 жыл бұрын
Cedar mulch repels termites and other bugs. Gravel can easily be covered with a couple of boards and you can just keep putting last board you're not standing on in front of you to get completely around house. Putting long dog leash on clothesline can be thwarted by a V shaped cut on a long board or pvc pipe, moving dog away as you approach. Put cable on ground between two swivel tie outs sunk well into ground and the V trick won't work.

I live in a formerly rural area that the INNER CITY grew out to and surrounded it. We went from ZERO Crime, to crime all the time. There is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING a criminal cannot defeat. You cannot HIDE anything from them either. The number one thing to do if you live in the "country" is, do NOT build your House or Outbuildings less than 500 feet from the road. If you build it close to the road, the Criminals drive by, they KNOW what time you get up, when you go to bed, wen you go to work and when you get home. You leave, in five minutes they can break in, steal everything you have of any value and be gone. In our County, ELLIS COUNTY TEXAS, they will not even investigate a CRIME less than $10,000 bucks. All they want to do is "Drug Busts" where they can MAKE MONEY from seizing the Vehicles, Reall Estate and CASH the Drug People have. They won't even patrol where I live. We non-drug people do not matter. If you want to buy the place it is for SALE. BB

our home insurance wont cover for burglary or break-in if there is even a single sliding window or door without a 'safety bar'. we learned the hard way, there was 1, just 1 window without a bar, and they found it. we got robbed at night at gunpoint and only got minimally covered cause of the missing window safety bar.

geese make better "watchdogs" than dogs, I've heard. My house was robbed several times when I lived in New Orleans. The neighborhood kids (3 of them) would come around asking if they could cut my grass cheap. One would be cutting, one was lookout, and one was trying to remove the glass from a locked back door. I caught them and ran them off. One of them came back and robbed the house 3 times during the day, then would come around and offer to help get some of the stolen stuff back for a price. My exhusband paid twice, then the next time it happened, he unloaded a 45 into the front door of kid's house. They moved out the next day and no more robberies.

These are some really great tips! Thank you very much. However, your example of where not to use a double keyed deadbolt, I believe is incorrect. It is a simple thing to smash the window on the left side of the door and reach in and open it

I like the window pins. Sure it doesn't stop them since they can bust the window, but at least it will make noise and slow them down. I guess you could replace the glass with plexi or lexan, though I'd suggest fixing your window from the inside for quick removal in case of a fire or it may trap you inside.

Last week My home was broken into, it was open land all around of the house the back was once a parking lot, the outside light was on. They came up kick in the lower part of my back door(turned out the wood there was weak) reached up to unlock both locks and one was a dead bolt. rushed in grab some lose money, grab some extra spare mags for two of my guns. Tried to steal my wide screen tv, but left it on the floor of my kitchen, but took the power cord and the remote control. The people on both sides said they heard nothing, there was a family on the opposite side of the former parking lot, but they are in the process of moving out and were not home, one family claim they stayed up until midnight and I got home from work at 4;30am and I live on a busy street. I am waiting on the knuckle dragging lowe's people to come out to measure my door ways for replacement doors and they are pissing me off for the waiting and they know of my worries of another break in.

I've been installing doors for years. Do not replace outswing doors (doors with the hinges on the exterior) for security purposes. Firstly, there are some applications where an inswing cannot be used. Secondly, if install3d properly, outswing doors are actually more secure. They're impossible to kick in, even with normal locks. You just need to make sure at least the middle hinge is a security hinge. These hinges prevent the pin from being removed unless the door is already open, giving access to a small screw driven through the middle of the hinge pin. Without removing that screw, the hinge cannot be removed from the exterior. I'm surprised he doesn't know this, and gave the awful advice of replacing the door instead.

ivor worrell I think the security pin makes a lot of sense, at least for my application. Are you going to lose each of the tools from all the windows you've installed the pins in? And if a burglar actually breaks your glass, which is the opposite of stealthy, he'll have to break and remove ALL the glass and climb in through a sash lined with glass fragments because he doesn't have the tool to remove the pin which would allow the sash to open.

I was thinking of actually removing the pane and installing the film to the whole that pain which should eliminate the need for the need for the adhesive? I'm concerned the film will make the pane too thick to reinstall in the sash. Any experience with this? Advice? And I found the pins on Amazon. Delivered today and I'm going to install starting this weekend. they only come in that brass finish unfortunately.
