When I was in the British Army I shared a room with a guy that played for the regiment. He'd come back all beaten up, with his nose all over his face and say "you should come down and train with us" - I was like ..er.. "no thanks, I like my face"

Baseball was also started here in the UK, it's an offshoot of Cricket, it was brought over to the Canadian colonies in the 1770s, where it trickled down into the rest if North America, where just like Rugby, it was altered to how you play it today.

the blond bloodied guy on the thumbnail is Jean-Pierre Rives, French player. He isn't shown in the clip probably because there is no good footage (it's old). This picture is from a 5 Nations match, Wales-France in 83. He did cut his scalp in a shock with another French player, Serge Blanco, who got a broken nose for his troubles... Rives kept playing until the end while coloring his shirt with blood. This image is pretty iconic of how tough rugby is.

I played rugby for my school and county here in Ireland. Never had many injuries apart from the usual dislocated shoulders broken fingers and lots of bruises. Also played cricket a much more pleasant and civilised game to play

No pads or helmets make players to learn proper techniques when it comes to tackling. So they learn them in schools at a young age. Because using wrong technique or going hard against a player will also injured the player who does the tackle. Also Rugby came from Soccer, american football came from Rugby.

I'm not trying to be pedantic or an ass, but Rugby didn't come from soccer. They both evolved from a mass brawl kind of a game like the Atherstone Ball Game. Over time different places set their own rules, so you got evolutions like Aussie Rules, Gaelic Football, etc. Soccer and Rugby were both pretty much the same sport for a long time until The Football Association (soccer) wanted to remove carrying the ball and hacking (rugby tackling) permanently from the rulebook. A lot of teams that are now Rugby clubs were members of the FA, but they quit and formed the Rugby Football Union in 1871 to keep the rules that we now recognize as Rugby, and the FA changed the rules to be what we now know as soccer. Back before that, if you showed up at another team's ground to play football, the home team decided the rules (how many players, can you carry the ball, etc). The more the sports were codified, the more different they became over time. All of the old Rugby Union teams are just called Football Club (like Sale FC), and some of the later soccer teams are called Association Football Club (Like AFC Bournemouth).

Regarding your discussion at the end, In a lot of other countries cricket is a lot more populat than baseball. Would like to see you guys reacting to a cricket video at some point if you get a chance, please. There's a creator by the name of Jomboy who usually covers baseball, but he does some really good videos on cricket too. Rugby is really big here in NZ. Legend has it that rugby was invented when William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it during a soccer game in 1823. American football seems to have been invented around 1870.

Yes, American Football was definitely inspired by Rugby. Rugby is played more like Football though, without the complex structured "plays" used in American Football.

Rugby Union has a lot of "complex structured 'set plays'" as well. However it is a more free flowing game where players think on their feet. You may be talking about Rugby League? It's a simpler game and mainly played in Australia. I enjoy both. Also Americans played 'Rugby' initially with the first recorded game in 1874, Harvard University vs McGill University.

@@matataulilo9582 I had never actually watched a Rugby match properly. The occasional times I saw a bit of footage, it seemed like players were passing the ball more than once. Which is why I thought it was more like Football. In American Foorball, teams usually run "Run Plays" or "Pass Plays". In Pass Plays, the Quarterback can only pass the ball once, and the receiver is not allowed to pass to another player.

Hey @@metawolf987 I understand a little of American Football and enjoyed the 'plays' during the last Super Bowl. There's a lot going on in Rugby Union. You are right though, they do pass the ball all the time, laterally or backwards, amongst other things. Play only stops a few times (a 'try' score, injury, penalty, and lineout, not sure if I missed any) otherwise play does not stop for two 40 min half. The sport is kinetic (or should be) always in motion. Cheers mate

Yes, our football came from rugby. At the beginning it was rugby. It changed slowly over time. Google what a 1920's football looked like. It looked like a rugby ball. The shape changed after the forward pass became legal.. As for all the equipment, there was a movement at one time to ban 'football' in America due to deaths and catastrophic injuries. Teddy Roosevelt stepped in and came up with the idea of helmets and padding. Actually, the games were still so similar that in the Olympics following WW! a bunch of American football players were able to win the Gold in rugby.

I suppose if it’s important to be the best and never lose to another country develop your own sport and it guarantees you never lose. Whereas New Zealand all black are probably the most consistently successful international side over many years, now South Africa is challenging that record, England have had their moments as have others like Wales and Ireland but that’s the joy of Rugby it is constantly ready to surprise fans and it’s a flowing game unlike many similar sports.

Rugby players play for 80 mins, two half’s of 40 mins, the same players no defensive teams or offensive teams or special teams. And these dudes ate huge some players are 6’10” a small player is around 6’ it depends on the position you play the physical contact is unbelievable it’s like being hit by a freight train concussion is not uncommon, players are taken off for head contact assessment

You’re getting yourself into a sticky area saying NFZl is more dangerous than rugby. Suffice to say that both sports are very brutal and injuries occur, you don't want to get into hundreds of posts from people championing their sport. The very big NFL players are bigger, but the biggest rugby players are still running, passing and tackling so have much more momentum behind them. Mind you there are some huge rugby players, France has a 22 stone player in their match last Sunday. There are no rules in rugby, there are LAWS. American Football evolved directly from rugby in the mid 1800s. You’re correct that protection evolved as well. You have professional rugby in USA it is the Major League Rugby and is playing now. There are about 12 professional teams.

Please keep in mind that most of these "biggest hits" videos show a LOT of illegal tackles. Also the older the footage, the more likely the rules for safety haven't been implemented yet. So don't question the legality of the tackle by these videos because most of them are illegal and should be penalized. Quick summery: You must use your arms to tackle (you can't just shoulder the player), you can't make contact with the head or grab above the shoulder and you can't dunk someone of their head (pick them up and drop them head first).
