I bought this nail gun as we were planning to renew all the fencing in our back garden. As this involved 19 double slatted fence panels, 10 of which needed to be cut down in size, we knew there would be a need for a great kzfaq.infoUgkxHQsUrwNr5GQrnx9V4xDdUr56qxwuiBHt deal of re-stapling the wooden slats to the wooden framework. Each alteration required the re-stapling of 62 wooden slats with double staples. Prior to starting the work we ordered sufficient additional staples as per the instructions with the gun.The gun performed fantastically throughout the entire project with no jams of misfires. The adjustable power was excellent allowing the staples to be fired into the 8mm slats to the correct depth. For the price paid this was a bargain and it proved itself to be so reliable and versatile making an arduous task much quicker and professional. I cannot recommend this product highly enough and it will be used on many other projects in the future.

I love this video. It reminds me of my dad and uncles. They did everything themselves, even built their own homes, and taught me everything when I was a kid as I helped. I have always worked on my own house and put all that knowledge they passed on to me to good use. Saving a bunch of money is nice too. Easily some of the best memories I have as a kid, working along side my dad and uncles building and fixing stuff.

I had a contractor clad my new home in hardi board three years ago. I took a piece of scrap and threw it in some tall grass to see what would happen if it was exposed to moisture. Cleaning up the yard the other day I found it covered in rotten wet leaves in direct contact with the soil and it is still in perfect condition.

It is so important to read manufacturers direction whether you are installing or not. It was so good you asked how the handyman how he was installing because the entire warranty would be voided and it would probably fall off. Great work 👍

Good for you! You may not call yourself an expert, but you know hell of a lot more than the self professed "experts" out there. I never did understand why trades deviate from the manufacturers recommendations given the legal warranty implications. I guess they just want to save time and that's it. Good on you for nailing into studs. Not only is it structurally better, but the nail does not penetrate the insulation and possibly cause a condensation point since it acts as a thermal bridge. Cheers from Canada.

Great info, yes a miter saw with a proper cement blade would make the cuts much cleaner. For anyone considering hardie board, do get to a site that offers a Visualizer to help you choose colors and looks. I will be going with the "stucco" look 4x8 sheets. Couple of concerns will be how the nail pattern will be hidden on flat sheets and how the edges between sheets are concealed. All in all, a good product that can be self installed if you take your time and research tips such as this.

Installing siding directly against the sheathing/wrap will not allow the house to breath, so whether you get bulk water behind the siding or dew point condensation behind the siding, your Hardie board will absorb water, and then the paint will blister and peel, and eventually the siding itself will swell and fail. Vertical strapping on top of the sheathing/wrap and under the Hardie is the only correct way to side.

I'm getting ready to do another section of my house with Hardie. The shear idea that several of you mentioned sounded good so I bought an EZ Shear, model ES500. It can handle boards up to 9 inches. Got it on-line from Lowes at the best price I could find. Looking forward to trying it out and avoiding some dust. This whole house project seems endless!!

You will love the EZShear, I purchased the 13" model and used it on the 1500 sq ft of laminate so far. I just had 2 quotes for all new siding and trims on the house, they came in at $26 000 and $37 000, so no way in heck I was going to pay that, so now I am about to tackle the entire house. depends on the sq.footage. The more square footage,.... ( you get the idea). Estimates are never the same from all bidders. Some value speed over quality, other stress strict adherence to the warranty instructions to give you your money’s worth. You choose which one you prefer 🙃. Basic, Better, Best pricing and never skimp on quality for speed. Workers are overrated. Some homeowners are straining at gnats and swallowing camels. They want the cheapest lowest bid and then use a magnifying glass philosophy to hold you to standards that not even all the greek god’s put together could accomplish. 🤯🕵🏻‍♀️🕵🏼‍♂️🥴 Building inspection fees, rubbish removal and disposal fees, prep work to cut out all the deteriorated plywood, OSB, you name it, it has to be right underneath costs. Factor all those items together or separately and you’ll begin to see why a business must account for all these issues or do it at cost just to please the customer 🖕🏼. Don’t like the exorbitant costs?? Be your own contractor, assume all the risks above a 5 foot ladder, watch a bunch of videos and get better than Best results and a sense of satisfaction for years. Manufacturers warranty applies when installed according to instructions and local building codes specific to your area and you’ll do just as good as any handyman or seasoned pro with 20 years exp. ( Most pros NEVER ever read first all the instructions, why should they, it’s not their home. ) Most failings happen past their limited one year installation warranty. Ask your handiman for referrals using the exact same materials on someone else’s home FIRST !!! Lastly, view and read carefully every comment first, then watch the videos. You’ll learn more from the comments sections and be wiser for it. So much to write, so 😔😖😴 good nite and Happy Father’s Day.

Great video Old Guy. I also prime the ends of my hardie plank, also the tops and bottoms and front before hanging each piece. Living here on the Gulf Coast I dont want any moisture getting in the boards. Then when it comes time to paint, I fill in my nail holes and caulk the ends, joints and the fillet between each plank... yep, that makes the siding look so much better. then come back and prime the caulking areas and paint. Prepainting with final paint would not work as someone mentioned since more priming is needed.
@derekleesmith76
@derekleesmith76 2 жыл бұрын
Hardy says in there installation instructions it shouldn't be caulk in the ends were it meets the trim, the reason for this is expansion and contraction. I did a house and caulked all the edges and the customer called back the next year and said all the caulk had pushed out and I had to fix it. I lost money on that job. Also learned a valuable lesson!
@triplenickle6995
@triplenickle6995 2 жыл бұрын
@@derekleesmith76 I resided the back of the house over 10 years ago, and no caulk push, I resided the front last year and no push or difference in caulk. I even blended the ends of the Hardy so its harder to see the seams. Im sure it depends on the quality of the caulk that will shrink and expand. Hardy does not expand. Im also sure Hardy didnt do any testing all over the country for its install recommendations. The two new homes built on the other street, the contractor did not caulk the top or bottom of the joints and the seams have gaps and looks bad.

Yup, also people should know that the reason a lot of people prefer this type of cutter over the saw is because the sawdust is hazardous to your health. It causes a disease called silicosis. Prolonged exposure/inhalation of silica particles. Id recommend some kind of cheap dust mask at the very least no matter what.

Thank you so much for posting this....the best thing I've been able to find thus far on you tube. I too am an Old Guy and I want to take this on. Did you previously have lap siding on your building? Did you just tear off the siding up so far and then begin from the bottom? How did you weatherproof during construction? I would appreciate any guidance you can give me. Thank you so much!

I have a lap siding directly attached without plywood or osb backing(1980's style construction). Since i'm slow and working mostly alone, on the large areas of the house, what i do is work in about 4 ft vertical sections. Pull off old siding, put osb up, cover with a vapor barrier , lastly put up the Hardie board. Between the old siding and hardie i usually stick some tar paper under the old siding to act as a flashing until i get around to pulling(sometimes a month or so) off the next section of old siding. I use the 3ft vapor barrier sold at Lowes rather than the 8ft product and then tape them together as i work up the wall. Still working my way around my house and have the front to finish up. Unfortunately, now i have to deal with several windows also. Thanks for comments.

Wonderful !!! From one old guy to another. I’m right now at the stage where you were when you considered getting quotes. No way I say, I’m finding this a breeze with borrowed gecko gauges and a diamond saw blade in my skill saw. Yes, you need a good mask but the cut is clean and straight. My only issue is/was, getting the nailer set correctly. In some hardiboard videos they mention nailing through to the stud but also in some cases straight into the OSB or ply walls; this is not wise. When the gun is set to go into a stud, and by the way, try to leave the head a little proud so as to snug in with a hammer, if you go into the wall the nail will/ can go right through the siding. As with most things in life, once you try, it’s not such a big deal. Thanks again.

Will those Gecko Clamps support 12' 5/16" fiber cement boards. I know you said you used them on 12 footers but I am starting a prject on my home but was unsure of what gauges to go with. I thought the Solo Siders were the only ones that could support 12 footers but now you said that the Gecko ones are able to support them. Did you have any difficulty using the Gecko gauges on 12 foot boards?

I have used the Gecko's on 12 ft boards many times and they have supported them fine. However, i have been using 8.25 inch Hardie planks. Since there has been no issue on these planks, i'd be comfortable using them on the larger planks. If you had any problems with 2 clamps, a third one could be added but i don't think you'll have an issue. Let me know outcome.

I just bought a house that has a structure over a 2 car garage that has the Masonite siding on it and the bottom 3 rows are looking bad. Built in 1974. Would you replace just the pieces needed or do the whole thing. Also wanted to know if it comes already painted and if you ever have to paint it again.
@Oldguydoingthings
@Oldguydoingthings 6 жыл бұрын
I've never used the pre-painted material so can't help with that question. Regarding the Masonite question, I'm not sure there is a simple answer but i do have a couple of thoughts. Old structures often have no plywood/osb between the masonite and the studs, like my house. I have replaced the masonite in this scenario but painted it front and back on the lower pieces and where it overlaps. It seems to hold up fine and is relatively simple to do. However, after several years the 'older' masonite above it begins to deteriorate and it is also not as strong without the plywood backing. So it is actually a short term(several year) fix. I personally would not put the hardie board directly on the studs without the plywood backing. Another option might be to put backing material on the structure, use hardie and then put a flashing between the masonite portion and where the hardie/plywood buts up to it. Then continue hardie up the wall when msonite starts going bad. Guess the direct answer is that i dislike Masonite so much i'd do either the hardie/plywood for the bottom 3 rows or if time and $ permit do it all in hardie.

two inch nail seems a little deep into framing. Builders get away with it because there's no plumbing or electrical running though the wall when siding and sheathing are installed. But a siding reface you have to be careful not to run too deep with siding nails otherwise you run the risk hitting electrical or plumbing. There's no nail plates on the exterior of your home, just interior walls have the nail plates

@savannahtraderful
@savannahtraderful 6 жыл бұрын
The specification calls for a minimum 3/4" penitration into the stud using galvanized or stainless steel ringshank nails. The 2" is standard. I'd take care to mark where the electrical runs, pipes etc where located to avoid nailing at those points if there's possible contact.

Do not use the incorrect saw blade to cut hardie or if you do, be sure to always be wearing a mask and eye protection. The reason you use a special blade for hardie is because it lasts longer and it also kicks up less dust. Inhaling hardie dust is extremely bad for you.

i would have continued the hardie board under the window, it just sticks out and doesn't look right. you could have notched it out, so that the line flows better. other than that you did a good job.

Did you use a roofing nailer or a siding nailer? Trying to determine if i need the special coil siding nailer?? Thank you
@Oldguydoingthings
@Oldguydoingthings 7 жыл бұрын
josh chute I used a coil nailer but probably anything would work. Air pressure setting is very important to avoid driving nails to deep into plank
@Oldguydoingthings
@Oldguydoingthings 7 жыл бұрын
Josh, i did not use a roofing nailer. My coil nailer is multi purpose. I think even a hammer and nails would work fine, just take longer. What is important is the type of nail. The box my nails came in is gone but i measured the nails Measurements are 5mm on head, 3mm diameter at ring shank, 2in long. I've also used 1.5 in long but when going thru both siding and osb into a 2x4 I usually use the 2in. I also feel safer using galvanized nails to avoid rusting. I'm sure other types of nails would work but i've had good results with these. Hope this helps some.

I sided my garage with Hardie planks. Pros: insect proof; fire proof; rot proof. Cons: very dusty to cut; planks are long and floppy making it very difficult to apply solo. I screwed each plank to the garage and drilled pilot holes with a masonry bit. Would I use Hardie again? Undecided.

Oldguydoingthings / As a painter of 45 years, I can tell you that quality matters. Currently the best bonding primer on the market is called STIX, or another one is XIM. The primer is the most important part of a quality paint job ; especially on exteriors.....

Good info. If someone does use a saw instead of the clippers shown, they should be VERY careful not to breath the dust. It is very bad for your health and a mask of some sort should used.

@@Oldguydoingthings It has less than 1/16th of expansion when painted black and in full sun all day. White PVC expands and contracts up to a 1/8th. Stuff cuts like butter on a table saw two which makes it great for doing bay windows with all of those long miters.
