Hi Martin, You said your van doesn’t charge on idle and that struck a note with my situation. I commute on a scooter in Scotland through the winter and use most of the spare electric running heated grips and a heated jacket. How I saved some power was by fitting a quality (not cheap rubbish) LED headlight bulb made by Osram. (Osram LEDriving H4) They now sell these in Halfords and if you fitted a set to your van it would reduce your electric consumption at 14 volts on idle from approx 7.8 amps down to just 2 amps. As you will know 5 amps goes along way towards getting a positive charge and you could go further with other lights too. The bulbs in question are around £100 but they are quality with a good beam pattern and it might make your life a little easier with less power consumption. Best regards Scoots

Excellent stuff. I've done the pass a few times but in a T5. I felt for you, both top and bottom but you are very good at extricating yourself from problems, although you also appear to be quite good at getting into them in the first place.

The charging fault at low rpm sounds like a alternator for a petrol engine may have been fitted which doesn't start to charge till 1000 rpm where a diesel alternator starts charging at 700 rpm due to the lower idle speed of a diesel engine if you have to rev it up to put the battery warning light out its probably a petrol alternator

I took that particular scenic route in a works Sprinter, with a few wacker plates in the back. I hadn't realised how heavy the payload was, and I must have burnt half the clutch plate off, getting it up. My blood still runs cold at the thought of getting the boss to find me a tractor, and explaining why I was there. My favourite road in the country, though.

Sounds like you let off the gas too soon when getting yourself unstuck. Don’t kill your momentum like that. (From some who’s hung vehicles in way worse places then that.) The waffle boards are gold. You may want to get some heavy duty stakes And a small but heavy metal mallot. You can secure the waffles into the dirt so they won’t slide as easily. I keep stakes of different lengths, just make sure they don’t stick up too far and go through a tire or the van. Cool adventure, keep enjoying.

Now you know why that sheep was grinning at you. Fortunate you went at a quite time. Can be a nightmare when it's busy. I once had a sticky moment on one of the sharp bends just after the road had been resurfaced. The loose gravel have no traction and had to roll back onto a grass verge with a very steep drop down the hillside. Got two passenger side tyres on the grass then jammed the petrol tank on a rock. Wife was not too happy especially when she saw the drop right outside her door.
